    About swine flu

Swine flu is the common name given to a new strain of influenza (flu). It is called swine flu because it is through to have originated in pigs, but this is not certain.

The most common symptoms are fever, sore throat, diarrhea, headache, feeling generally unwell and a dry cough. In other words, the symptoms are very similar to seasonal (regular) flu. Most people recover within a week, even without special treatment.

    Pandemic

The virus was first identified in Mexico in April 2009. It has since become a pandemic, which means it has spread quickly from country to country because it is a new type of flu virus that few, if any, people have full resistance to.

Flu pandemics are a natural event that occurs from time to time. Last century, there were flu pandemics in 1918, 1957 and 1968, when millions of people died across the world.

In most cases the virus has proved relatively mild. However around the world more that 1.700 people have died and it is not yet clear how big a risk the virus is. For this reason, and because all viruses can mutate to become more potent (stronger), scientists are saying we have to be careful.

    High-risk groups

Some people are more at risk of complications if they catch the swine flu and need to start taking antivirus as soon as it is confirmed that they have the illness. Doc-tors may advise some high-risk patients to take antivirus before they have symptoms if someone close to them have the swine flu.

patients who have had drug treatment for asthma in the past three years

    pregnant women

    people aged 65 and over

    children under Five.

    To stop the virus spreading

62,000 phones left in London cabs

But survey finds only half of lost mobile phones clai-med

LONDON, AUG. 31 - Lost your mobile phone, handheld computer, daughter? Chances are you left them in the back of a London cab. An estimated 62,000 mobile pho-nes or nearly three for each taxi in Britains capital were left behind in London cabs during the first six months of this year, a recent survey found. The survey by Taxi Newspapers and British security software company Pointsec Mobile said cabbies also discovered 2,900 laptops and 1,300 handheld compu-ters in their backs seats. But only half of the lost phones were claimed, with many owners betting their operating service would replace the lost phone with a new and better telephonic gadget. Many mobile phone operating companies would rather give out new handsets than see their clients defect to rival services, which often try to lure customers by offe-ring the latest mobile phones free for switching services. The survey comes shortly after media reports that a bodyguard for Britains Prince William lost his personal organizer, allegedly carrying some royal numbers, in a taxi.A little girl was among a strange list of other items cabbies said they had found, including a goldfish in a water-filled bag, a suitcase full of diamonds and 2,000 pounds ($ 2,900) in cash.

Every day thousands of teens wake up afraid to go to school. Bullying is a problem that affects millions of stu-dents of all races and classes. Bullying has everyone worried, not just the kids on its receiving end. Yet becau-se parents, teachers, and other adults dont always see it, they may not understand how extreme bullying can get. Bullying is when a person is picked on over and over again by an individual or group with more power, either in terms of physical strength or social standing. Two of the main reasons people are bullied are because of appearance and social status. Bullies pick on the people they think dont fit in, maybe because of how they look, how they act (for example, kids who are shy and withdrawn), their race or religion, or because the bullies think their target may be gay or lesbian. Some bullies attack their targets physi-cally, which can mean anything from shoving or tripping to punching or hitting, or even sexual assault. Others use psychological control or verbal insults to put themselves in charge. For example, people in popular groups or cli-ques often bully people they categorize as different by excluding them or gossiping about them (psychological bullying). They may also taunt or tease their targets (ver-bal bullying). Verbal bullying can also involve sending cruel instant or email messages or even posting insults about a person on a website practices that are kno-wn as cyberbullying. One of the most painful aspects of bullying is that it is relentless. Most people can take one episode of teasing or name calling or being shunned at the mall. However, when it goes on and on, bullying can put a person in a state of constant fear. Guys and girls who are bullied may find their schoolwork and health su-ffering. Amber began having stomach pains and diarrhea and was diagnosed with a digestive condition called irri-table bowel syndrome as a result of the stress that came from being bullied throughout ninth grade. Mafooz spent his afternoons hungry and unable to concentrate in class because he was too afraid to go to the school cafeteria at lunchtime. Studies show that people who are abused by their peers are at risk for mental health problems, such as low self-esteem, stress, depression, or anxiety. They may also think about suicide more. Bullies are at risk for problems, too. Bullying is violence, and it often leads to more violent behavior as the bully grows up. Its estima-
