The passing of this wonderful Australian is a sad day for our country but it also provides us with an opportunity to reflect on an amazing life of someone who gave so much. My first association with Dame Elisabeth was back in 2003 when I was Principal of Karingal PS. My school was close to Cruden Farm, her home, in Langwarrin. Resources at the school were poor and the ability of the community to contribute to projects was difficult. I wrote a letter to her foundation requesting assistance with financing a new school playground. Within two weeks a cheque arrived at the school with a covering letter from Dame Elisabeth. The children at the school painted a picture of a farm house that resembled Cruden Farm. I had the children write a card thanking her for her donation. I looked up her address in the phone book and was amazed when it was listed so I decided to ring the number to see if I could drop the picture into her house. I was amazed when the phone was answered by Dame Elisabeth and not a Personal Assistant or Secretary. She said to me that I could come around straight away. I had naively assumed that such an important person would have others deal with us lesser known people. I went around to her farm with my Assistant Principal and knocked on the door, no security guards or big locked gates. Dame Elisabeth opened the door and invited us into her study. The room was filled with numerous items and the typical photos of her children and grandchildren. Rupert’s picture was in a frame with all the others on the mantle. As it was winter the open fire was going and Dame Elisabeth had her clothes (including under garments) drying in front of it on the fire screen. We had a conversation about school, education and the challenges that face young children today. She was only 93 back then. When we started here back in 2005 with no playgrounds or basic equipment I once again wrote to Dame Elisabeth. As per the previous request a personal cheque arrived again within two weeks. We spend many times knocking people and we often suffer from the tall poppy syndrome here in Australia and of course Rupert Murdoch comes under great scrutiny, justifiably so at times. Deep down there must be some of Dame Elisabeth that has rubbed off on him. If it is only a fraction then he will have some qualities that perhaps we don’t all see. The word national treasure is bandied around but when you look back on Dame Elisabeth’s life the term is ideal if not inadequate. A great Australian has passed but like all great people her legacy will remain for eternity. Russell Gascoigne, PRINCIPAL. “Dates to Remember”

VALE DAME ELISABETH MURDOCH The community would not be aware that Dame Elisabeth was a

contributor to our school. The passing of this wonderful

Australian is a sad day for our country but it also provides us

with an opportunity to reflect on an amazing life of someone

who gave so much.

My first association with Dame Elisabeth was back in 2003

when I was Principal of Karingal PS. My school was close to

Cruden Farm, her home, in Langwarrin. Resources at the

school were poor and the ability of the community to

contribute to projects was difficult. I wrote a letter to her

foundation requesting assistance with financing a new school

playground. Within two weeks a cheque arrived at the school

with a covering letter from Dame Elisabeth. The children at the

school painted a picture of a farm house that resembled Cruden

Farm. I had the children write a card thanking her for her

donation. I looked up her address in the phone book and was

amazed when it was listed so I decided to ring the number to

see if I could drop the picture into her house. I was amazed

when the phone was answered by Dame Elisabeth and not a

Personal Assistant or Secretary. She said to me that I could

come around straight away. I had naively assumed that such an

important person would have others deal with us lesser known

people. I went around to her farm with my Assistant Principal

and knocked on the door, no security guards or big locked

gates. Dame Elisabeth opened the door and invited us into her

study. The room was filled with numerous items and the

typical photos of her children and grandchildren. Rupert’s

picture was in a frame with all the others on the mantle. As it

was winter the open fire was going and Dame Elisabeth had

her clothes (including under garments) drying in front of it on

the fire screen. We had a conversation about school, education

and the challenges that face young children today. She was

only 93 back then.

When we started here back in 2005 with no playgrounds or

basic equipment I once again wrote to Dame Elisabeth. As per

the previous request a personal cheque arrived again within two

weeks. We spend many times knocking people and we often

suffer from the tall poppy syndrome here in Australia and of

course Rupert Murdoch comes under great scrutiny, justifiably

so at times. Deep down there must be some of Dame Elisabeth

that has rubbed off on him. If it is only a fraction then he will

have some qualities that perhaps we don’t all see. The word

national treasure is bandied around but when you look back on

Dame Elisabeth’s life the term is ideal if not inadequate. A

great Australian has passed but like all great people her legacy

will remain for eternity.

Grade 4 Camp Poems

Archery was my favorite.

Radical helpers. Ropes course was SO easy! Amazing teachers! Big smiles! Restless people. Incredible people! Lightning on Monday night. Orienteering at night was really cool. Delightful food. Gold was found. Extreme activities.

Amazing activities. Really bouncy trampoline. Roads were really hard for the bus driver to drive on! Always messy in our cabin. Bus broke down. Took 1 hours and 15 minutes to get there. Raining on Tuesday. Terrible weather! I loved the food they made.

Looking for gold in the river was super hard! Olivia, Maxine, Anita, Mikaela and Kayana were in my cabin. Dave was the manager of the camp. Gooey marshmallows were delicious!

Enter-taining Cowboy dancing!
