ELISABETH SCHERFFIG

Elisabeth Scherffig, Dusseldorf III, 180x130cm., grafite su carta svedese, 2014

Elisabeth Scherffig

was born in 1949 in Düsseldorf, Germany. At the beginning of the ‘70s she moved to Milan, where she is now living and working. Through her work, Elisabeth Scherffig investigates the urban places around her and conceived by the artist as real organisms involved into a never-ending process of mutation and stratification. Elisabeth Scherffig’s artistic production is based on an in-depth analysis on the fast changes involving the urban spaces of the city where she lives. The artist’s technique consists in mapping her cities through a precise eye and providing all the details and constitutive urban elements, most of the time stressed or, on the contrary, hidden to the observer. Her urban spaces do not show any human sign -a part from the case of Joseph Beuys’ trail in the map of Düsseldorf (2014)-. We can only see the human action on the natural environment, that she represents by modifying the aspect of landscape, historical maps, infrastructures, architectures or spaces that may never have really existed. Elisabeth Scherffig uses her trained eye to realise precise drawings that reproduce demolition places, ruins and archeological rests that she observes while wandering around the city, as a flâneur.Elisabeth Scherffig’s art consists of creating huge paper sheets where she reproduces urban places by analysing and studying them deeply in detail. This is the case for Essen (2007) few miles away from Düsseldorf, or Beirut (2008). Both cities are made of coloured pastel and they reproduce the destructions and bombings that marked the cities in-depth. As far as the city of Tel Aviv (2007-2008) is concerned, the artist uses light china sculptures perfectly combined in order to shape the buildings profiles through an aerial perspecti-ve. Moving to her most recent production, Elisabeth Scherffig combines drawing paper to other heterogeneous materials, such as silk, china and silicone. The best piece of work to conjugate Scherffig’s spacial research to the material aspect of silk is the installation made of ten organza panels on an iron structure. The resulting architecture is harmonically integrated into the surround-ing environment (Ex cartiera Binda, Milan, 2002-2003). The installation represents traditional Spanish fishers’ little houses that she is used to seeing during her summer holidays. Elisabeth Scherffig works precisely on her subjects realising a kind of embroidery that shows her deep personal way of observing and investigating the reality, both on silk and on paper. In 2012 she started her serie “Vitrea”, a cycle of artworks focu-sed on the effects light produces on glass surfaces. Elisabeth Scherffig’s last works come from real casts modelled on the urban soil and reassembled later in new installations in a kind of hanging “sculptures” that interact with ancient architectures. Elisabeth Scherffig’s artistic career is characterised by a deep collabo-ration with civic exhibition halls, as well as art galleries in Milan, London, New York and the native city of Düsseldorf. The publication of the monograph Urbs et Civitas is an interesting step in her artistic career. The work was edited by Baldini Castoldi Dalai in 2009 and curated by Angela Madesani who realised as well the inside curatorial texts for the mono-graph, to-gether with Gillo Dorfles and Antonello Negri. Elisabeth Scherffig’s artistic activity is strong and prolific. Among the solo shows that mark her personal artistic research, it is to mention the collaboration with Massimo Valsecchi in Milan, with whom she has been exposing from 1976 to 2000. In Milan at the Museo Studio Francesco Messina she exposes Parva Sed Apta Mihi, curated by S.M.Frassà and A. Kac-ziba. In London she regularly works with Fag-gionato Fine Arts, and the solo shows Vitrea and New Works are the most representative examples of the collaboration. Recently, she has participated to a number of collective shows, mostly in Italy, such as Ad Naturam at the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale, and De Rerum Natura at the Galleria Studio La Città, both of them organised in Verona in 2014 and curated by Angela Madesani. In 2015 she participates to Within light / Inside glass, curated by Rosa Barovier Mentasti and Francesca Giubilei at the Spazio Loredan, Venice. The Void (2015) is the collective show curated by Angela Madesani for Theca Gallery Milano. The exposition concerns the concept of “void” personally interpreted by the four artists: Elisabeth Scherffig, Elena Modorati, Christiane Beer e Aja Von Loeper.
