Elisabeth Penker, “Bench-Shelf” Acrylic on poplar plywoodview: “First Nation Pavilion” from “Protections” (curated by Adam Budak & Christine Peters)
Kunsthaus Graz, 2006 46 x 151 x 42cm | manufacturer: Atelier Elisabeth Penkerbackground: 4-channel sound installation “De-Grammatical”
The “Bench-Shelf” mirrors the bottom and the top seating elements thereby giving the object an asym-metrical appearance. The “Bench-Shelf” form developed out of the FO/GoLab model by Penker for a video reference library developed in the summer 2001. It was later used by the museums doorman (in Porto) as furniture.

Hanging, on the wall are 3 chair objects hung similar to Shaker/Amish chair hanging construction, which were designed to hang on the wall and not to take up valuable floor space.
Two objects are hand-made “sculptural-chairs”, which cannot stand alone. The sec-ond object is a folding chair which is folded flat and painted one color from a frontal view in the color of Amish board design. By unfolding the chair the original color of the wood is clearly visible creating a second composition (or view). Numerous contem-porary artists, have related the Shakers/Am-ish radical functionalism to their sculptural practice.
