CENTERVILLE MESSENGER (096380) Free Upon Request-Published Weekly by Centerville Church of Christ, 138 N. Central Ave., Centerville, TN 37033-1427 February 8, 2017 Volume XXXVII –Number 6 “I Hope You Know” From the first moments of creation, there was no shape or form, no crafting or molding of a shape. That was not the first thing done in creation. The first move of creation, the first motion out of heaven to indicate the power of the Almighty God, was the revealing of light (Genesis 1:1-2). When Jesus stood among the holy ones of God on the mount of transfiguration, there was a spoken word by Peter, a shout from heaven, and a shining light with the assurance, “This is My beloved Son…hear Him (Matthew 17:5). When John was given a glimpse into heaven, the glory of the throne of heaven illuminated the mind and heart of the great apostle (Rev 4:1ff). Light is the power which comes from God and is shown to all by His revelation. “There was a man sent from God” is a verse that reminds us of the source and power of all light (John 1:6). God is described as so many things throughout the scriptures. Our God is described as love, a consuming fire; God is merciful, God is jealous, greater, helper, refuge, comfort, grace, good, Judge, King, holy, and salvation. God is a sun and shield, but among all the things which God is described as being, God is giving…He is a giver of life, a giver of “light, and in Him is no darkness at all” (I John 1:5). God’s light is so powerful and so pure, there is nothing veiled in God, nothing hidden before God. He is the fullness of all that is must be revealed in our lives. John the baptizer would be one who would come from God to tell the world of the One who would come after Him, Jesus Christ, who would be to the world the source of light. Where there is no light, the darkness is allowed to prevail. “He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him” (John 1:10). Not just in the 21st century, but in the 1st century, may we even say from the first moment of time, the world has not made the greatest effort to understand the nature of the Light of God. As a result, there have been more moments when we’ve not known Him, than moments when we have known Him. Jesus is in our world John 9:5), but far too many do not know Him. The ideologies of the world which threaten our existence, do not know Jesus. The moral relativism which prevails in our world and erodes the moral fabric of society, do not know Jesus. The division of people which prevails in our world, pitting one group, one class, one race, one people against another, reinforces that still, far too many people in our world, do not know Jesus. Make no mistake about it, we’ve got to have light to survive, but the light of our Lord is the light that leads us away from darkness and into our safety. When we fail to focus on the light and when we fail to view the light and instead concentrate on the darkness or we place our attention in the field of darkness, not only do we become overwhelmed by the darkness, we become sensitive to the light, and the light becomes the thing which is strange, instead of the darkness. When our focus of this world is consumed by the darkness of division, contempt, malice, fleshliness, and corruption, our eyes are consumed by the darkness, and the light becomes so blinding that we look away from it and back to the darkness. I hope you know, our eyes should be so fixed on our Lord that we not only see His light, but allow His light to guide our path (Psalm 119:105).

STARTING THE DAY AND MONTH OFF RIGHT!

Last Thursday 30 of us enjoyed a delicious breakfast and appreciated the thoughtful prayers for our Monthly Prayer Breakfast. Thanks to Alan, Suzette and Karly Potts for sponsoring the breakfast and for Misty Shelton and Mike Elkins help in preparation and clean up. THE SOUPer BOWL PARTY WAS AS EXCITING AS THE GAME! We had Junior & Senior High everywhere as we enjoyed the game together. We also had a large amount of soup donated for the Outreach Center. Thank you to so many that helped make the night great. Thanks to Tiffany Peters for bringing a group from Pinewood to join us and thanks to Mike & Regina Elkins, Jim Hudgins, Philip & Alice Anne Jacobs, Brett & Heather Martin, Ray & Shelda Qualls and Misty for all their help setting up and cleaning up! THE MONTHLY BIBLE STUDIES continue to be a highlight of every month. Thank you to Matthew & Cissy Dotson and Derek & Rachel Newsom for their leading these special times to dig deeper into God’s Word. What a blessing it is to have these families involved in the lives of our youth! SENIOR HIGH RETREAT APPLICATIONS

are beginning to come back in! Be sure you get one from the Youth News Board and return them before the 19th. This will be a special time for our Seniors and everyone that goes. Memories will be made that will last a lifetime as we laugh, cry, and grow as a group and personally. Do not miss this unforgettable weekend as we get “Rooted!” “ANXIETY IN THE HEART of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.” –Proverbs 12:25 Seek ways to do good today, if not only to say a word of encouragement. The world has enough negativity, be a light and… follow His path –Craig
