Expectations of Students until End of Term

Staff are committed to having the students engaged in their learning until the end of the school year. I can assure parents that there will not be any “relaxed” or “easy” periods for any students. Learning will be high quality as always. Therefore, students must be at school until the very end and if they are sick in the last week, they will need to present a Doctor’s Certificate. This includes the Picnic Day on Friday, 14 December and the Academic Awards Assembly on Monday, 17 December.

End of year reports will be available in hard copy only at the conclusion of the Academic Awards Assembly on Monday, 17 December.

USE OF TECHNOLOGY

You might remember that in last edition of the newsletter I focused on the importance of having respectful relationships, especially those with females. In this article, I would like to take a slightly different tack and look at the appropriate use of technology.

Recently there has been a few issues that have involved the improper use of technology. Some students are using their phones to take photos without other people’s permission. A further concern is the nature of text messages that are sent which are also often inappropriate.

Have you had a chance lately to check what might be on your son’s phone? It is so easy these days for people to send images from one phone to another. It worries me as to the nature of the material and whether it is acceptable or not. A lot of this material is downloaded from the net and then passed on. Of even more concern is material that is generated by the young people themselves.

There is regular media attention regarding cyberbullying and sexting. I would encourage families to have a discussion around what is appropriate and legal to send and what is not. In many cases it is the parents that sign the contracts for these phones and they are the ones who pay for them, so I think you are entitled to check what your son is up to with their technology.

Sexting is something that some young people are increasingly involved in. Don’t be naive and think that our kids don’t do this sort of thing. Be aware, be vigilant and be proactive by talking to your kids about what is acceptable and what is not.

The checking should include social media sites such as Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook. I’ve

Have you had a chance lately to check what might be on your son’s phone?

said it before that I’m not a huge fan of social media as there is the potential for students to say and do things publicly on social networks that they wouldn’t do in person.

Again, I would encourage families to have a conversation about the correct use of social media. I remind the students; if you wouldn’t say it in front of the school or write it on your front fence, don’t say it on the net.

MOBILE PHONE RULES

Students are to have their phones switched off or on silent throughout

the day. Under no circumstances should a student have his phone

out or try to use it during the school day. If a student is seen with his phone out, it will be confiscated.

The rules and procedures regarding mobile phones at school are clear. The expectation is that students have their phones switched off or on silent throughout the day. Under no circumstances should a student have his phone out or try to use it during the school day. If a student is seen with his phone out it will be confiscated. The progressive consequences for students who have their phones confiscated are clearly outlined in the College diary.

Students may use their device in class in the formal delivery of the curriculum only at the discretion and under the immediate supervision of their class teacher.

ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS REFLECTIONS

As we prepare for the coming of Christmas, it is important to reflect on its purpose and meaning for each individual person. For many, particularly the Catholic Church, it is to remember and celebrate the coming of saviour Jesus Christ, for many others it is a time of giving, and to many it is to spend time with family.

The first Sunday of Advent begins a new liturgical cycle in the Church. For that reason, the Church sees Advent is an opportunity for preparation and change, to begin a new. It is a time for us to think about things in your life that you’d like to leave behind or change.

For the Church and for many people, beginning anew means that we take the past and give it over to Christ. It means that we let go of our past sin and hurt and ask Jesus to enter in. It means we turn to Him for a fresh start and have hope in all that He wants to accomplish in our lives.

Advent is a time of preparation and anticipation, at first, we reflect upon the fact that Christ will one day return in all His glory. We look to that truth and anticipate it with great hope. From there, we look at the fact that He did come long ago as a child. He was born of the Virgin and dwelt among us. As Advent begins, we can reflect upon how ready we are for Jesus’ coming. We should

From the Religious Education Coordinator

Commit to prayer, spiritual exercises, reflection and attentiveness to His gentle and glorious voice.During this time of advent, it recalls to mind memories of my pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 2015, and particularly visits to Shepherd’s field and the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Shepherd’s field is believed to be the location of the appearance of the angel’s to the Shepherds on Christmas night (Luke 2:8-16). At this amazing location my group were able to celebrate a beautiful mass in a makeshift church within a cave, which shepherds at the time of Jesus would have used to shelter from the elements. In this time I reflected what emotions the shepherds would have felt seeing the Angels appear to them, and would my response have been in that time.

After our morning visit to the Shepherds field, we continued onto what is believed to be the site of the Birth of Christ, now called the Church of the

reflect upon if we are preparing for Christmas with the same fervor that we prepare for Christmas through shopping, cooking, decorating, etc. We should also reflect upon if we are preparing for the spiritual celebration of His birth, are we awake and attentive to the numerous ways that God speaks to us on a daily basis?

If you find that you are not as prepared for His return in glory as you’d like to be, make this Advent a time when you get your heart ready.

Nativity. Bending down, we entered the church through the “door of humility” which forces those entering the sacred site to show respect and reverence for the place, as we are forced

to bow down towards the grotto of the holy manger. During our time in the church we were able to touch and pray at the silver star, which is believed to be the very spot that Jesus was said to be born. The star’s inscription reads in Latin: “Hic de Virgine Maria Jesus Christus Natus Est” (Here of the Virgin Mary Jesus Christ was Born). It was a truly surreal and life changing experience

to be in the place that our Lord and saviour was thought to be born.

These two holy sites, where incredible encounters with the story of Christ and provided me with lasting and unforgettable memories to recall during this time of Advent and leading up to Christmas.

My experience in the Holy Land, but particularly in Bethlehem has brought life to the Gospel stories, especially recalling the story of Christmas in the Gospels. Christmas is the fulfillment of the hope given in Advent and is the realization of God’s promise. God humbled Himself, becoming a little child entrusted to the care of Blessed Mary of Nazareth. She became not only the Mother of God, she also became our Mother in Grace.

I pray that in this season of Advent, leading up to Christmas, that each and everyone of us has the time to prepare, not just our presents, our food, our houses, but also ourselves spiritually and faithfully for the coming of Christ on Christmas day.

Year 9 Interaction Day

On Tuesday 4 December, Year 9 students from De La Salle Caringbah and Our Lady of Mercy Burraneer engaged in an 'Interaction Day' at Gunnamatta Park. The DLS students started the day with a walk along the Cronulla foreshore before meeting the OLMC students for an afternoon of games and activities including oztag, cricket and volleyball.

It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to mingle and build relationships, and it was so positive seeing both schools embrace this opportunity. The day concluded with a BBQ lunch in the park which was a fitting way to end a great day of fun and interaction.

Over the past few weeks, Year 10 have been participating in the alternate program. This program is designed to keep the students engaged whilst doing worthwhile activities right up until the end of the year.

The alternate program started off with work experience in Week 6. The feedback we received from so many employers was exceptional. Here are some of the many positive comments that came back to us at the College.

Has been excellent. We would love to have him back again.

A pleasure to have with us this week. He has taken on tasks with enthusiasm, endured the less interesting aspects of the day with good humour and has completed all tasks assigned. When drawn out about the issues he has been exposed to during the week he has formed well thought-through, nuanced views of complex issues that are too often seen in black and white terms.

Very conscientious and hard worker. Has outstanding knowledge and respect. Very happy with his positive attitude.

Happy to have more students from De La Salle Caringbah.

Those students who spent the time seeking employment in areas that interested then for

Year 10 Alternate Program

their future career thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Some students have even gained part time employment through this experience.

Other activities the students have participated in throughout this program included completing their bronze medallion and resuscitation certification, Spirituality Day at Stanwell Tops, RYDA road safety course, family drug support talk as well as various activities to prepare them for Year 11.

Last Thursday, the Year 10 students participated in a Community Service day where they were involved in activities to help those less fortunate, especially those in our local community. A group of students went out to The St Vincent De Paul Society Centre at Auburn. Here they packed over 400 hamper boxes for Christmas that will be distributed across Sydney. In addition, a small group of students went offsite to paint a property that is owned by St Vincent de Paul in Woolooware. The remainder of students were at school to pack hampers/toiletry bags for those people in our community who need extra help at this time of year. Some students cooked banana bread and slices that went out to Margaret House to feed those people in their care. The work they did here was invaluable and will make a big difference to the lives of many, especially at Christmas time.

Leadership Day for 2019 Leaders

On Monday, 26 November sixteen Year 9 students who were shortlisted for leadership roles in 2019 attended a training induction day at Cronulla Sharks Leagues Club. Students were given some insight into what is required to be a leader from Mr Buxton, Mr Musumeci and Mr Mayoh.

Goal setting, public speaking tips, servant leadership and time management were all vital aspects addressed. The final 12 students chosen will have the opportunity to revisit and display these skills next year in their roles.

The calibre of shortlisted students was strong, and they

also shared a little bit about themselves in front of the group, which is never an easy task. Final interviews have taken place and a decision on the successful 12 leaders is expected in the coming days.

The boys are to be commended on their efforts on the day and I sincerely wish all leaders the best of luck in their roles in 2019.

We have also had time to bond together as a cohort for the last time at a sports challenge day and picnic day. It is so nice to see the positive friendships that have been formed /solidified over the last four years at the College.

This week sees a farewell mass to Year 10, the Year 10 formal and a very special graduation mass on Thursday evening.

It has been enjoyable spending time with this group of young men over the past few weeks. As this year comes to a close and their time at De La Salle Catholic College Caringbah comes to an end I would like to wish every student all the best for their future. Whatever path they take as they head into 2019, I wish them every success and happiness in their life ahead.

Toyota Australia Scholarship Program

On Monday, 26 November 2018, the Toyota Australia Scholarship Program awards ceremony was held at Gymea Tradies. This program aims to help students in Years 10 and 11 enrolled in a secondary, combined or special school in the Sutherland Shire to overcome barriers and reach their goals by providing them with financial support.

Through the generosity of Toyota Australia, two scholarships were offered to two students in Year 10 at De La Salle Catholic College Caringbah. These students are Philip Lagud and Joseph Domingo. Both received $2,000 in financial support to help them with their future education.

Philip will use the funds to purchase a new laptop to assist him in pursuing a career in IT. Joseph is using his money to assist him with his studies in Year 11 and 12, in particular his animal studies TAFE course.

Congratulations to both young men and we are grateful to Toyota Australia and Schools Plus for the wonderful opportunity they have given our boys.

2018 Band Tour

This year, 51 eager students participated in the college's annual Band Tour in the Nelson Bay area. After arriving at our Fingal Bay accommodation, it was a quick change into our Band uniforms and then to Shoal Bay Primary School, where we performed to over 500 students. Our interactive concert had these young students helping to conduct, play percussion instruments, singing and clapping along to our programme. After this, the students were able to relax with a swim and a walk along the beach, where an impromptu sand castle building competition yielded some amazing results.

On Day 2 we performed at the Harbourside Nursing Home in Shoal Bay to a small but delighted crowd. I was very proud of our students' interactions with the residents at the conclusion of the performance, with many of these people commenting that it was the highlight of their year to have such wonderful young people perform and then talk to them. This was followed by an afternoon of dolphin watching, which though cold was very rewarding. In the evening we performed at the Wests Diggers Club, where we were joined by some of the students' grandparents for a performance by both the Jazz and Concert Band.

We packed up early on the third day, and headed for the Anna Bay on our way back to Sydney, with students boarding down the sand dunes, then resting while singing many of the band songs. Luckily, the gale force winds hit soon after we left and we made it back to Sydney before road closures due to bush fires in the area. My thanks to Mr Manahan, Mrs Corby and the other supervisors who gave up their own time to offer this great experience to our students.

Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Qualifying Hike 2018

Duke of Edinburgh 2018 has been a challenging yet rewarding year for our Bronze and Silver participants.

On Thursday our Bronze boys set off on their qualifying hike down on the South Coast, completing a hike from Minnamurra along the coastal track to Werri Beach. This hike was roughly 32+km and was made difficult by the boys having to carry two days worth of food, shelter for the night and plenty of water. The weather was on our side, with sunny skies and quiet a strong tail wind, although setting up the campsite was, as always, quite the challenge.

The hike took us along the coast where we walked along numerous beaches including Jones Beach, Bombo Beach, Kendells Beach and Werri Beach. We also made a lunch stop at the popular Kiama Blowhole. There was plenty of wildlife along the way and came into contact with many cattle. Day One really challenged the boys, but sitting around the campsite sharing stories with your

mates was definitely worth it.

Day Two saw the boys hike further south making there way to Gerroa and returning to the campsite to pack up their gear and return to Caringbah on the train.

To say I am proud of this group is an understatement. Not only on the achievement of successfully completing the adventurous journey, but that these young men gave up their time to serve others, challenge themselves physically and learn a new skill. My thanks to Mr Luke Carnegie who assisted us on this trip.

It is a college tradition for the Year 9 students to organise a supper for the graduating Year 10 students and their families on the evening of their graduation. Year 9 students organise this supper in an acknowledgment of the achievements of the Year 10 students and as a symbol of the responsibility being transferred to the Year 9 cohort.

This year, the Graduation Mass and Awards Ceremony will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Parish Church Caringbah on Thursday, 13 December 2018. The Mass will be followed by a supper at approximately 8:30pm.

Accordingly, we are asking for each student in Year 9 to bring a plate (dips, cheeses, cakes, chips etc.) on Thursday, 13 December to the college office. We are also requesting for assistance from parents and students in the facilitation of the supper, which includes setting up the hall and contributing to the clean-up afterwards. Recognising the important role schools have in their communities in supporting the mental health needs of young people and their families, this initiative is de-signed to support the strategies you al-ready have in place and strengthen part-nerships with headspace centres and mental health services. These sessions will build awareness and capacity in students and parents/carers and where possible be co-facilitated with school staff and local mental health pro-fessionals. This initiative complements mental health & wellbeing frameworks and the beyondblue National Education Initiative Sessions can be tailored to individual school needs and will be available to schools until December 2019. This initiative is funded by the Australian Government.
