Reflection on Our Cover

Matthew’s Gospel has a lot to say about the kingdom of heaven, beginning with the Beatitudes, which can be thought of as “Be-Attitudes,” ways of being in the world now that will get you into the world yet to come. They are not the usual rungs on the ladder to success that call for calculation, competition, and caring little for anyone other than oneself. Being poor in spirit, mourning, being meek, hungering and thirsting for justice (God’s, not the usual brand meted out in our world), showing mercy, being clean of heart, making peace, and putting up with persecution -- this can sound like an eight-step program for being losers in the world. But to those who chose to walk these ways, Jesus declares, “Blessed are they,” and promises that “theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:10). Or, as Paul puts it, God chooses the nobodies to work on, with, and through. It’s enough to make you search out another kingdom. Only there you might not end up being blessed, just wishing you could return to do things you never did -- but should have. Living the Word

GOD’S WAYS If we itemized the top eight things that bring us happi-ness, what items might show up on the list? A hefty bank ac-count? A Caribbean cruise or African safari? A shopping mall marathon? Season tickets for the hometown team? A new car? If we already have some of these things, most likely we know they don’t bring us true happiness. Fact is, they probably bring us more aggravation—items to return or repair, one more ob-ject for people to argue over. Today’s scriptures point us to-ward the things that bring us true joy. The words of all three passages conflict with our society’s conviction that fortune, fame, and power are the sought-after treasures of life. God’s ways are not the ways of our popular culture, after all, and to-day’s readings help point us in the right direction. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

THE EIGHT BEATITUDES OF JESUS

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek,

for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure of heart,

for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for

the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Join us as we celebrate Catholic Schools Week

January 30 - February 5, 2011

The logo designed for the week displays the words "Catholic Schools: A+ For America" beneath a stylized banner of stars and stripes in red and light blue. The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2011 celebrates the fact that Catholic schools are an added value ("a plus") for the nation. Because of their traditionally high academic standards and high graduation rates, all supported by strong moral values, Catholic schools and their graduates make a positive contribution to American society. Catholic schools give a high level of service (the A+ level) to local communities because of the many service pro-jects students undertake. "Giving back to the community" and "helping others" are values instilled in every Catholic school student. Catholic schools give a high level of service to the nation (the A+ level) by serving students from all economic backgrounds and giving them a strong academic and moral foundation, allowing them to succeed in life, serving in the government, industry, business, non-profit and educational fields.
