Sociopaths vs PsychopathsSociopath Psychopath

Definition- a person, as a psychopathic personality, whose behavior is antisocial and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience.

Scenario Example: If someone were being beat up, a sociopath would walk by, notice, and not feel anything towards the victim, most likely just simply shrug and walk away.

Definition- a person afflicted with a personality disorder characterized by a tendency to commit antisocial and sometimes violent acts and a failure to feel guilt for such acts.

Scenario Example: Person beats up victim with no sense of guilt or regret, simply does the act because they enjoy doing so and find pleasure from it.

*It is estimated that 1 in 25 people have an Anti-social personality disorder. (ASPD)

Sociopaths Psychopaths

Basically have no conscience- no guilt or feelings of remorse

Have no shame in actions Nothing holds them back- choices

are made based on what they want to do, not based on what they should do. They do not think of rights and wrongs

They are self centered and it’s all about what benefits them

They do not enjoy harming others, but do not feel bad either

Will do whatever it takes for them to reach an ambitious goal

Feel like they should obtain power over other people

Do not have fear, communicative skills, or empathy

Are not afraid to take risks They enjoy harming others It’s probable to be genetic Show antisocial behavior Most violent crimes are

committed by psychopaths Do not become emotionally

attached to other people Most psychopaths are not

People with anti-social personality disorders are usually diagnosed with symptoms of:

Lack of guilt, empathy and remorse Violent acts without considering the

safety of others Irresponsibility and continuous failure Persistent manipulation of the truth Manipulate others to feel a certain way Minimal behavior control

Signs/Symptoms of ASPD

A theory of why people have ASPD could be caused by the mother using drugs such as smoking which could have an affect on the unborn baby

People’s childhood/home environment can contribute to the development of ASPD

Children brought up in Foster Care have a higher rate of developing ASPD

Many people with ASPD have a type A personality, they do not develop friendship connections to others while they are growing up

Some believe ASPD is genetic, therefore if one has the disorder there is a high chance their child will develop it also

ASPD is more popular in males than females

Why do people have ASPD

There is no actual medical treatment but it is possible to benefit through therapy but it is difficult because it is common that someone with ASPD will lie during the therapy session.

Although conditions cannot be fully eliminated, symptoms can improve, but it is up to the patient.
