Thermo King has developed FleetWatch, a newfleet management system which will provideinvaluable reporting information to operators oftemperature-controlled fleets. An upgrade toThermo King’s highly successful Wintracsoftware, FleetWatch provides enhanced fleetmanagement capabilities.

FleetWatch has been designed to workseamlessly with R:COM, Thermo King’s remotedata downloading technology. R:COMautomatically downloads all the operating andtemperature data from the controllers and on-board data recorders installed with the ThermoKing refrigeration units, as soon as the vehicleenters the yard. Without any humaninvolvement, the data is transferred to an officebased PC via the R:COM base station.

Previously, data stored in refrigeration unitsrequired manual downloading, using cables andlaptops, and then time had to be spentcategorising and analysing the data into a usefulreport format. Now, with FleetWatch working inconjunction with R:COM, Thermo King canprovide a fully automated, customised reportingfunction, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

FleetWatch analyses the data automatically, and produces concise, customised reports –which are automatically sent to the user’sdesktop at specified intervals. By saving timeand labour, the system will help to reduce thecost of operation of temperature-controlledequipment.

The user can determine the content of thereports, to ensure the information provided isexactly what is needed for the effective management of their fleet.Standard reports can be chosen from the menu, or the user can choose to edit them, or create his own, specificallyconfigured to meet his needs.

Troubleshooting is made easier with reportson, for example, alarm codes, temperaturesout of range or overdue maintenance.Maintenance scheduling can be assisted withreports showing when equipment inspections

are due, either by date or reefer hours run,and the FleetWatch reports will provideexcellent diagnostic information whenmaintenance or repairs are required.

In addition to the refrigeration unit data,FleetWatch can also be programmed to collectother trailer data, such as brake, chassis ortail-lift servicing information.

R:COM itself is also a useful logistical tool, providing information on the location of

vehicles and vehicle utilization within theoperator’s local area network.

The combination of R:COM with FleetWatchprovides the busy transport or fleet managerwith essential information in an easy tounderstand format, effortlessly andautomatically – no more laptops and serialcables. The result is enhanced fleetmanagement, reduced downtime andimproved operational efficiencies, from thecomfort of the fleet manager’s office.

Thermo King Transportkoeling BV, the Dutchsubsidiary of Thermo King, recentlyorganised a symposium about the new"Piek" rules, which will become law in theNetherlands during 2004. Under the newrules, the noise level of distribution vehiclesis not allowed to exceed 65 dB(A) between21.00 and 23.00 hrs, and should even remainbelow 60 dB(A) between 23.00 and 07.00hrs. These limits do not only apply to thevehicle itself, but also to all ancillarycomponents, such as the refrigeration units.

Thermo King’s environmentally-friendlycryogenic refrigeration system satisfies thenew requirements, which is why a growingnumber of Dutch haulage companies areconsidering this new technology. Some 200representatives from haulage contractors andother interested parties joined thissymposium, where information was givenabout the current status of the Piek plans byMrs. C.M. Wortmann, the secretary-general ofthe Dutch Ministry of Traffic and Waterways.

Meanwhile, in the UK, over 100 operatorsattended a symposium hosted by UK dealers, where experts from Thermo King presentedthe environmental benefits – particularly interms of low noise output – of Thermo King’snew technology: cryogenics, the newalternator-driven system for large trucks, newdirect drive systems for medium and large

trucks, and Spectrum multi-temperaturesystems. The advantages of these newsystems, especially for urban distributionwhere fast temperature recovery and lownoise are key issues, were amplydemonstrated to the operators whoattended.

Scottish Milk Dairies, based in Hamilton(near Glasgow, Scotland) has specifiedThermo King’s new V-500 direct drivesystem on its latest fleet addition of 13.5tonne trucks, to be used on the company’sbusy multidrop delivery operation.

"The delivery operation that these newvehicles are used on involve over 40 dooropenings each trip, and start at 4.30 in the morning", says Alex Beattie, DistributionManager at Scottish Milk Dairies. "Whichmeans there are two factors which are veryimportant to us: the efficiency of fridgeunit’s temperature pull-down and recovery;and noise.

"So far we have been extremely impressedby the V-500’s capabilities," he continues.

"The pull-down and recovery are excellent:the fridge has no problem coping with thedoor openings, and temperature stays wellwithin the required band. We have twosimilar vehicles using Thermo King’s dieselpowered TS-200 fridge units, and theperformance is very comparable."

Being direct drive, i.e. the refrigeration unitis driven by the vehicle’s engine and has noseparate diesel engine, the V-500 offers anumber of other advantages. The weight ofa V-500 is approximately one third that of acomparable diesel-powered unit, and thenoise produced by the V-500 is minimal –particularly important as deliveries start at4.30 a.m.

"We specified the V-500 because we wanted

to do an overall comparison of self-poweredrefrigeration units with direct drive – anoption that wasn’t previously available to uson this size of vehicle," comments AlexBeattie. "So far the comparison has beenvery favourable," he concludes.

Dublin-based CussoloughTransport, one of the main

distributors for Cuisine deFrance in Ireland, has recently

taken delivery of one of the firstThermo King alternator-driven

A-1050 refrigeration units to go on theroad in Europe.

"We chose the A-1050 after a visit to ThermoKing’s manufacturing facilities in Barcelona",says Roy O’Sullivan, Managing Director ofCussolough Transport. "We were shown aprototype of the unit, and we couldimmediately see the advantages for our ownoperation.

"The new vehicle has been on the road for afew weeks now, and we certainly haven’t beenlet down," continues Roy O’Sullivan. "Thebiggest appeal is that it is so quiet, withvirtually no noise above the vehicle engine. We deliver to retail outlets that start at 5.00a.m., so this is a major consideration for us.

It is also less labour intensive for our drivers– they don’t need to check separate diesel andoil levels on the refrigeration unit before theystart.

"The performance so far has been excellent",he continues. "This is combined with loweroperation costs – there is no separate dieselconsumption, and it requires less servicing, aswe only need to change belts once per year. There is the added advantage of more storagespace because there is no evaporator, and wepay less road tax because the unit is lighter."

Cussolough Transport deliver frozen par-baked bread and pastries from the Cuisinede France manufacturing facility in Dublin toretail outlets, ranging from large supermarketsto local stores, in the Irish province of Leinster.

With 20 to 30 door openings per trip, temperature pull-down and recovery is veryimportant. "The pull-down is excellent",comments Roy O’Sullivan.

"Box temperature is brought from ambient(around +20°C) down to set point at -18°Cwithin 40 minutes."

"Looking to the future", concludes RoyO’Sullivan, "we will definitely consider anotherA-1050 next time we need to expand ourfleet."

NEW A-1050 forCussolough Transport

Scottish Milk Dairies Choose Direct Drive for Multidrop Operation

In this series of articles pre loading checks, loading practices and the factors thatinfluence good temperature managementhave been discussed. This edition will coveroperational issues that can both increase thequality of the goods being transported andlower the temperature control unit’soperating costs.

Today the consumerexpects to have an ever-increasing variety offoods availablethroughout the year. Some of these fruits andvegetables are bothdelicate to handle andtransport as well as beingrelatively expensive. Retailersexpect to maximise their shelf lifeto increase both sales and margins. Howthese products are transported can greatlyimpact these requirements.

As a Thermo King user, you can benefit froman array of options and features that willachieve these market requirements. However, many operators can find the sheernumber of features somewhat confusing, and thus decide to "play safe" and usenothing more than the factory settings. Thisis why Thermo King developed OptiSetTM ,available as standard on the top of therange SL-400e.

Think of a high-range car seat with"position memory". You set the seat upexactly as you want it and commit thissetting to memory. Next time you use thecar, all you need to do is select thatparticular setting, and the seat"remembers" all the nuances you hadchosen.

OptiSetTM is similar in concept. Yourdealer will discuss your exact load

requirements and agree with you theoptimum settings (hence OptiSetTM)for each type of load. He will thenload each of these settings into themicroprocessor memory. The

operator only has to select theset-point he requires, and the

pre-set parametersrelating to that set-point(and product) willautomatically kick in.The result? Fewer

decisions, fewer mistakesand optimum use of theequipment features foreconomy and loadprotection.

A real example makes thebenefits of OptiSetTM even

clearer. A load of sensitivesoft fruit such asstrawberries would bedamaged and its

value decreased if thetemperature were to droptoo low. So what are themost ideal conditions inwhich to transport theload? Strawberries are anorganic product that will

give off heat onceharvested. Therefore it is

important to keep air circulatingin the trailer through the Continuous

Run option. To avoid top freezing, the SL-400e would be set up to operate onDischarge Air Control. This selectable featureensures that air reaching the load is keptextremely close to set point and thuseliminates the risk of top-freezing.

A conventional temperature control unitmaintains temperature by alternativelycooling and heating the air to provide aneven load temperature. The impact ofadding heat removes moisture from theload, which in the case of strawberrieswould lower their weight, cause them toshrivel in size and generally reduce theircustomer appeal and shelf life. By activatingthe Temperature Modulation feature withinOptiSetTM, the heat cycle is eliminated. Thereare two vitally important benefits of themodulation system. Firstly the load istransported at a constant temperature mostbeneficial to the strawberries. Because thereis no heating cycle, the amount ofdefrosting required during the transportcycle is greatly reduced resulting instrawberries that appear on thesupermarket shelf looking as though theywere picked the day before.

All these selectable parameters (ContinuousRun, Discharge Air Control, TemperatureModulation) are activated as soon as theoperator selects the "strawberry" set-point.Since the settings for strawberries wouldnot be ideal for other products such as meator frozen goods, a different profile for eachproduct to be carried (up to a maximum of10 profiles) can be stored in OptiSetTM andselected as required.

In the next of these articles, the use ofother features used in OptiSetTM, such asCycle Sentry and Fuel Saver, will bediscussed.

In the meantime if you would like to knowmore about the benefits of OptiSetTM andthe SL-400e please contact your localAuthorised Thermo King Dealer.

Spedition Serr, a full-service logistics providerbased in Bad Wimpfen near Heilbronn,Germany, is progressively switching its entiretemperature controlled fleet over to ThermoKing equipment. SPECTRUM refrigerationunits for multi-compartment transport and thewireless data transmission system R:COM arethe company’s top choices.

Spedition Serr, a family business founded in1946, deploys a total fleet of 72 articulatedand semi-trailer trucks to carry all kinds offoodstuffs. Most of the company’s refrigeratedboxes are multi-temperature, with separatingpartitions and additional evaporators formixed shipments of fresh, refrigerated orfrozen goods. Serr has turned to Thermo Kingfor refrigeration units for every vehicle it hasacquired over the last year or so.

Fleet manager Albert Bolinth explains why:"First of all, we have had no problems withthe units themselves, and secondly we arevery satisfied with the service provided byour dealer in Ulm. Then there is theR:COM system. We have been veryhappy with it so far and we definitelyintend to build on it." Serr currentlyoperates 13 Thermo King units, nineof which are SL-TCI or newgeneration SPECTRUM multi -temperature models. With theR:COM system, Serr staff can call upeach journey’s temperature dataonto their office-based computersas soon as vehicles enter the yard –thanks to a radio link between thedata logger and an antenna on thecompany’s building.

Top Choice for German Multi-Temperature Distribution

Thirty years in the refrigerated transportindustry is an occasion worth marking.Founded in 1972 in the town of Pouzauges, western France, Transports Saint Michel hasover the years developed considerableexpertise in temperature-controlled transport.

With a fleet comprising almost 200 semi-trailers and as many Thermo King units,Transports Saint Michel operate for the mostpart in southern Europe, and have recentlyestablished regular routes across Poland,Germany and Belgium. Today, withwarehouses in Macon and Paris and a depotin Lille, the company is able to efficientlyserve the whole of France and the Beneluxcountries.

"When the company was launched in 1972, wechose Thermo King for our refrigeration units.Today we are glad that we did. The ThermoKing range has never stopped evolving, andthe company’s products are always one stepahead of ahead of the competition. That is whywe use Thermo King units in all our vehicles,"says Franck Antoine, Transports Saint Michel’schairman and managing director.

"We have always had our own workshop foreveryday maintenance, but that didn’t stop ussigning up to the Total Kare contract offeredby Thermo King. The contract assures uspeace of mind in the event of any problems, which is important because our vehicles areon the road more often than they are at ourpremises. The Total Kare contract covers alleventualities and is effective 24 hours a day.Speedy service, central administration andrates fixed in advance: all are factors whichconvinced us to choose this solution," addsFranck Antoine.

"What’s more, with Total Kare, TransportsSaint Michel are given priority client status bythe Thermo King network, another advantagewhich influenced our choice.

"Total Kare is not a substitute for our ownworkshop. It is an additional tool allowing usto send our vehicles anywhere in Europe incomplete confidence and security. This isbeneficial for us and our clients."

A wholly-owned subsidiary of Thermo KingEurope, Total Kare is a European servicecompany which offers a full range of ThermoKing products and services.

"Total Kare is a modular programme, meaningcustomers can elect the full service option orpick and choose the services they need.Taking account of the particularities of thetemperature-controlled transport businessand of the huge variety of very specialisedelements that characterise the sector, TotalKare can offer hauliers a made-to-measureprogramme that fits in perfectly with theoperations of any haulage company," saysRoland Duquesne, Total Kare Europe Director.

The first Thermo King SPECTRUM TSrefrigeration unit in the Netherlands, fittedto an insulated Jonker body on a DAF LF45chassis, was recently delivered to Dijkgraaf-Reinders in Apeldoorn.

Dijkgraaf-Reinders was lookingfor a temperature control

system combining highcapacity with low fuelconsumption, and just asimportantly, relativelyquiet operation. The

company distributes frozen

and refrigerated products to bakeries andthe hotel, restaurant and catering trade –many of which are located in built-up areas– on early morning deliveries involvingfrequent door openings. Thus, efficienttemperature recovery and quiet operationwere both key features.

Substantially quieter than previous models, the new SPECTRUM TS sets the benchmark. This reduction in noise level is achieved byreducing component noise generation, isolating critical components and the use ofsound absorbing exterior panels.

The SPECTRUM TS unit even provides morecooling capacity than the company needs,so Dijkgraaf-Reinders is already preparedfor more demanding requirements that maybe imposed by forwarding agents andconsignees in future.

The SPECTRUM TS comes with a newly-developed, user-friendly in-cabcontroller, providing multi-zone monitoringon one screen, and specifically addressingdriver needs with easy to push buttons, aneasy to read screen and menus and achoice of languages.

FIRST DUTCH SPECTRUM TSFOR DIJKGRAAF-REINDERS

One of the Dijkgraaf - Reinders fleet equipped with a Spectrum TS.

French company Pomona, an operation with7,000 employees, 90 years of experienceand a fleet of 1200 vehicles – 35% of whichare temperature controlled – has recentlychosen Thermo King’s SPECTRUM unit.

"Pomona has three different divisions:EpiSaveurs for the transport of dry goods,TerreAzur for fresh fruit, vegetables andseafood, and PassionFroid for temperature-controlled transport of fresh and frozenproduce. Reliability and performance areessential to us and that is why we choseThermo King equipment," says Fabrice Jung,Operational Logistics Director for the Alsace-Lorraine region.

"Pomona PassionFroid has nine sites inFrance, one of which is in the east of the

country, along with three logistics locations.Together these cover eight Frenchdépartements and part of Luxembourg".

"We make our deliveries early in themorning. Each run comprises deliveries toalmost twenty clients, and of course thevehicle doors have to be opened at eachdrop-off. This is why we needed refrigerationequipment which keeps the produce wecarry in perfect condition.

We tried out Thermo King’s new SPECTRUMTS as soon as it was launched. The resultsof our tests were more than conclusive:SPECTRUM offers vastly superior pulldownand air recovery performance than previousunits – throughout the entire delivery run,"adds Fabrice Jung.

Mounted on Lamberet bodies and RenaultPremium and Midlum trucks, the newSPECTRUM TS units come with a new in-cabmonitor and control panel.

Easy-to-use, available in three languagesand with temperature and function scrolling, the monitor is an excellent temperaturecontrol tool.

"Our drivers really appreciate the way thein-cab monitor makes their task easier, whilethe DAS data acquisition system simplifiesour own work. Checks are simply a matter ofcalling up the recorded data," says Jung.

POMONA OPTS FOR NEW SPECTRUM TS

French company Pomona trials the Spectrum TS.

DESERTCHALLENGETHERMO KING AND THEPARIS DAKAR RALLY50,000 meals, 14,000 bottles of water, 8tonnes of bread… In total more than 150tonnes of food were transported anddistributed during the Paris Dakar Rally heldin the month of January.

In excess of 1,300 breakfasts and just asmany larger meals were served to thecompetitors and organisers every day. Forthe catering alone, 45 members of staffwere needed to prepare and serve frommorning to evening.

And the food and drink on offer from thisgiant kitchen was not purchased from thelocal markets, but brought all the way fromFrance.

Once again, the Thermo King trucks and, above all, units were at work in the wingsthroughout the entire rally. The very latestSL-400 units, mounted on brand new semi-trailers were used to transport meat, fruitand vegetables, which went on to feed boththe participants and organisers.

For Bernard Le Men, the rally feels just likea holiday. “Every year, I take at least threeweeks off to come to the rally. This year, weleft Paris on the 30th of December.”

“With our refrigerated semi-trailersequipped with the very latest SL-400 units,we are able to take all the normal roads. They drive superbly. On the trip from Tozeurto Siwa in particular we discovered somereally beautiful regions.”

“A group of our colleagues were responsiblefor providing the supplies for the stages inLibya and another group will take over forthe next stage. The organisation is totallyflawless thanks to the excellent vehiclesand units used.”

“The SL-400 provides the ideal temperaturerecovery, irrespective of the load inside thetrailer. This is a major advantage during therally when the outdoor temperature cansometimes rise above 30°c”

“What’s more, some loads need to be keptfor up to three weeks. This is why it is soimportant for our units to functionperfectly. We know we can rely on ThermoKing – we have absolute peace of mind toconcentrate all of our efforts on ourdriving. And that’s essential for the successof the rally.”

“Using the Smart Reefer, we can check andchange the temperature of the load at anytime. This gives us, and above all thecustomer, an added guarantee.”

From on-track to bivouac assistance,Thermo King plays a key role in the successof the Paris Dakar Rally.
