Some interesting side notes: - Eventual race winner Eric Frye was running with a broken toe! His wife mentioned that Eric wanted to run an 18-minute 5K but the broken toe could slow him down! - Winner Eric and runner-up Edwin delos Santos are bud- dies! They were in the cross country team at St. Mary's High School and as a team, they went to Missouri State for the cross country competition every year! - Bronze medalist Michael Serwatka is the son of Marites delos Santos’ officemate, Joseph Serwatka (who also ran the race!) - Women’s winner, Samantha Conde is a member of our Sinag-Tala Dance Group! - Sarah Dorst, women’s silver medalist, is also a friend of Edwin. They do the Hospital Run every year! - Women’s third placer, Sabrina Orrison, is the sister of Edwin's office mate.

CONCLUSION: To have a chance at winning next year’s race, either be a dancer or better yet, be a friend of the de los Santos family! Mom Mirla was Registration Committee co-chair and in charge of refreshments. Dad Paul first sug-gested the run/walk as a fundraiser based on daughter Marites’ experience with her sorority’s fundraiser; he also made the arrangements with Shawnee Mission Park for the use of the course. Older son Alan would have run and placed well had he not been in charge of course direc-tion/monitoring! As seen in the results, younger son Edwin won the silver medal. Finally, son-in-law Matt Shields, a sports-nut himself, was in charge of the finish line with wife Marites, assisted by Mom Mirla and Dr. Nonong Pardo.

Paraphrasing that popular saying, the family that plays to-gether stays together!

A TRIBUTE TO MR. JACK WEST By Manuel P. Pardo, M.D.

Jack was an Okie from Muskogee (Oklahoma, that is) who had a friend in Kansas City who was courting a young nurse from the Philippines work-ing at the K.U. Medical Center. It so happened this nurse had a room-mate also from the Philippines who was working as a medical technolo-gist at the Medical Center. Such was the setting for the meeting of Mr. Jack West and Miss Maria Juana “Nita” Panlilio. It was in the early 60’s.

Soon after they were married at the Redemptorist Church. They settled in the Coleman Highlands neighborhood several blocks from the Church. Before long there came “little Jack” they fondly called “Sport” and their home became a setting of many a children’s parties, including ours, who were about “Li’l Jak’s age. After working with Dunn and Bradstreet, Jack decided to open his own business, The Newsroom Bar and Lounge, on Broadway which he operated until his retirement several years ago.

Jack was very much involved in the activities of the Filipino Association of Greater Kansas City from the early 60’s to the 80’s until his business got so busy he could no longer spare time for volunteer activities.

During the years of the Fiesta Filipina and Festival Asia at the Crown Center Square in the 70’s and ‘80s, Jack was very much in the forefront of activities from being an electrician to getting dressed in his barong and acting as emcee. He was a regular attendee at the monthly meetings of the association and gave valuable advice on the affairs of the association.

Those of us who knew Jack well will certainly miss him. But it’s important to remember that when those we love die, they leave something very special behind. They leave us memories. And as long as we have those memories those we love will always live on in our hearts and minds.

    Farewell, dear friend.
