renewable energies. The high proportion of international visitors was particularly impressive together with the considerable interest shown by industry experts, which was reflected by the number of discussions at the fair. It was a “full house” at the Viessmann stand throughout the event.

The Viessmann brand promise as main mottoThe Viessmann brand promise “climate of innovation” was also the company’s motto for this year’s trade fair presence. This underlined the international focus of the company’s participation at the fair

and its claim to technological leadership. In addition, it reflected the company’s philosophy of seeing changes in the environment as an opportunity.

Heating market in turmoilThe fair in Frankfurt confirmed that the heating market is currently in turmoil. High-efficiency condensing technology is in the process of replacing conventional heat sources. The market significance of heat pumps is growing; biomass boilers are enjoying a renaissance, above all in rural areas. Thermal solar systems for DHW generation and auxiliary heating increase the overall

motorways, Frankfurt Airport closed – the leading international trade fair ISH 2013 had teething problems this year. On the first day, many of the visitors were either late arriving at the exhibition grounds or did not arrive at all. Even Günther Oettinger, EU Commissioner for Energy, was stuck in the snow and therefore could not open the trade fair.

efficiency of heating systems by harnessing free and carbon-neutral solar energy.

With micro CHP systems, combined heat and power units are also implemented in smaller residential buildings. Fuel cell systems will soon be launched on the markets. They will give power-generating heating an additional boost.

Above all, they will greatly help to decentralize the power supply. As a result, electricity, heating and even cooling are growing together more and more. Intelligent networking and new storage technologies will lead to additional efficiency potential.

structural shift also in industry, commerce and municipal authoritiesThis structural shift is not only taking place in residential buildings but is also affecting industry, commerce and municipal authorities. Alongside efficient technology, professional energy consultancy and services as well as energy management play a key role.

complex challenges The challenges are complex – ranging from the production of process heat and steam through to heat recovery and integrated heating and cooling production. Urban districts are developing their own solutions in the form of local heating networks; in rural areas, bioenergy villages that supply their households with power entirely from renewable energy sources are emerging.

“The key to success of a sustainable energy era is leveraging the efficiency potentials and extending the use of renewable energies in the heating market.”

03

Heating market not sufficiently addressedWhile North America is stepping up its use of fossil energy by exploiting shale gas and tight oil deposits, the European markets are increasingly affected by the sustainable energy era called for at a political level. It therefore makes little sense that the political discourse mainly focuses on the power supply and does not concentrate sufficiently on the heating market. The key to success in the energy revolution is extending renewable energies and, in particular, exploiting the efficiency potentials on the heating market.

Making energy efficiency tangibleTogether with Prof. Heinz-Jürgen Kristahn of the Berlin University of the Arts, Viessmann hosted a student poster competition in order to make the abstract term “energy efficiency” tangible and help boost awareness for this important issue. The task of art students from across the world was to visualize “energy efficiency” with the means at their disposal – in other words, to give efficiency as the most important resource a face. The best of over 1,000  submissions have been published in a book. Read more about it in the article on page 29.

In tune with structural shiftsViessmann presented its comprehensive product range in Frankfurt – together with more than 40 technical innovations designed to accommodate the structural changes described above. The most important of these are described in the articles on pages 14 to 28. As a result, Viessmann believes that it is in good shape to address future challenges.

Now is an ideal time to maintain the momentum of the trade fair and capitalize on any opportunities that arise, together with the company’s business partners.

relaunch of “aktuell” This issue of the Viessmann magazine for heating technology is the first with a new layout. In keeping with the claim “nothing is so good that it cannot be improved”, the magazine’s concept has been enhanced to make reading “aktuell” even more enjoyable, without making any compromises with regard to information content.

The company’s trade fair presence at ISH Energy takes center stage in this issue of “aktuell”. Readers who did not attend the event in Frankfurt can therefore obtain a realistic impression of the trade fair.

I hope you enjoy reading the first “aktuell” with a new look.

Investment in “beo by aichinger” and Msr solutions

affordable drinking-water solar package

Following on from the November takeover of Viessmann Kältetechnik AG in Hof, we are extending our commitment to refrigeration engineering with an investment in the company “beo by Aichinger” which belongs to the Aichinger Unternehmensgruppe. “beo by Aichinger” was founded with the aim of increasing energy-saving potential in the food retail industry in the operation of refrigerated units. In Helmbrechts, located about 20 kilometers from Hof, a modern production site has been created for this purpose. The company, trading as LEHO, has developed a wall refrigeration system for the self-service sector that is produced in Helmbrechts and is already successfully established on the market. Refrigeration systems, particularly in the food retail sector, have a large part to play in this area of business, because they currently are responsible for a large proportion of energy costs.

We have also invested in electronics specialist MSR Solutions based in Wangen/Allgäu. 50 employees work at MSR on the development and marketing of electronics products for measurement and control. Among these products is a radio-based home automation system. The company was founded in 2001 and turned over four million euros last year. Our investment extends our competence in the sector of home automation to single- and two-family homes, large residential buildings and commercial properties.

A solar thermal system consisting of two collectors, Vitosol 200-F, with an absorption surface of 4 square meters in total and a dual storage water heater Vitocell 100-B (250 liters), is now on the market at a very attractive price. The system comes preassembled and

forestry can be used in a way that leads to the improvement of factors such as ground water quality, soil quality and species diversity.

As the technical journal “forum.new power” reported, it was shown that the seepage water contains less nitrate than that of areas used for other agricultural purposes. This is because short rotation forests, such as those operated by Viessmann, do not have to be fertilized. Higher contents of organic carbon compounds in soils, as a result of falling leaves and soil being rested, have a positive effect on both the binding capacity for nutrients and for water. In addition, short rotation forests also offer new habitats for many plant and animal species.

The researchers have published their results in a special edition of the technical journal “BioEnergy Research” (Volume 5, No. 3).

Short rotation forestry is positive for the environment. This is the conclusion reached by an international research team which included forest ecologists from the Thünen Institute in Eberswalde. A study set out to ascertain the environmental effects of increased short rotation forestry in agricultural landscapes and also, how short rotation

environmental benefits of short rotation forestry confirmed

According to a current study, flora and fauna benefit from short rotation forestry.

perfectly tailored to simplify planning and ordering. Preassembled components reduce assembly time considerably.

The drinking-water solar system presents the heating system specialist with an excellent case for using solar thermal systems. Because system operators who take this option not only conserve important resources and protect the climate but also make huge savings in energy costs.

Further information about the solar thermal system can be found on page 20 of this edition.

At the opening event of the “Business Initiative for a Sustainable Energy Era” held in Berlin, representatives of the climate protection businesses met with Federal Minister of Economics and Technology Philipp Rösler and Federal Environment Minister Peter Altmaier. The business representatives discussed with the Ministers and the former President of the German Chamber of Commerce, Hans Heinrich Driftmann, and President of the Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH), Otto Kentzler, the challenges and opportunities for German medium-sized businesses in the sustainable energy era. The Ministers also presented new-member certificates to four new climate protection businesses. This brings to 24 the total number of members in the Germany-wide all-sector network of excellence founded by the Federal Government and the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

With Viessmann as a founding member of this network, the “climate protection businesses” have made a voluntary commitment to measurable and ambitious goals in climate protection and energy efficiency, with outstanding performances already achieved in the internal energy efficiency of products, services and production. They set an example in the climate protection sector, reducing CO2 emissions and showing: Climate protection is worthwhile.

municipal applications. Accordingly, the Viessmann stand was divided into three large sections.

1. single-family homes and large residential buildings The first section showcased highly efficient system solutions for single-family homes and residential buildings – for both new builds and modernization of existing buildings. The “building energy efficiency check” illustrated how savings can be made. Users only need to enter a few details and the system calculates the potential savings to be made from modernization with different heat sources. It also demonstrates that the products showcased at the event already comply with the requirements of the European Eco-Design Directive. In the future, heat sources will be categorized in different energy-efficiency classes and marked

The Viessmann stand at the leading international trade fairThe “climate of innovation” brand promise was also the company’s main motto at ISH Energy 2013

T he trade fair motto “climate of innovation” underlined the

international focus of the company’s participation at the industry’s flagship global trade fair and particularly its claim to technological leadership. And “climate of innovation” also embodies the company’s philosophy of always seeing changes in the environment as an opportunity.

The three sections of the trade fair standThe structural shift towards the sustainable energy era poses a tremendous challenge. The heating market holds the key to success. Because it is the biggest consumer of energy, and current systems are outdated. The modernization backlog urgently needs to be tackled. This does not only apply to residential buildings, but also to commercial, industrial and

with different labels, as is already the case for household appliances.

The building energy efficiency check is also available as a free program for computers or tablet PCs. As it supplies objective results, it is the only program of its kind to be certified by TÜV Rheinland (German Technical Control Board; see also page 31).

2. Industrial solutionsThe second section of the Viessmann stand was devoted to large-scale solutions for industry, commerce and municipal authorities. Viessmann has the right solution for every requirement – be it heating, power, cooling or steam. And this also applies to local heating networks and bioenergy villages.

3. Innovation trackThe innovation track, the third section of the trade fair presence, was situated along the center of the stand. Here, vis-itors could experience the future-orient-ed concepts developed by Viessmann for producing, distributing and using energy, which are pushing forward the conversion of the energy supply to-wards greater efficiency and renewable energies.

The energy efficiency check clearly showed energy system operators how to significantly cut energy consumption in single-family homes and large residential buildings. The result was presented on a large-scale displayboard.

The innovation track was the centerpiece of the trade fair stand.

One of the numerous highly efficient solutions showcased at the large stand: Dr. Frank Voßloh, Managing Director Viessmann Deutschland GmbH (center), and Product Sales Manager Mike Redder (right), are explaining the micro CHP compact device Vitotwin 350-F to Dr. Uwe Kolks, member of the management of E.ON Deutschland GmbH.

Power to gasSurplus renewable electricity can be stored in the gas grid through biological methanation of hydrogen and CO2. Concepts of this kind for producing energy were summarized under the heading “power to gas”. Generating storage capacities is the key to success in the sustainable energy era. The storage systems must be able to absorb energy when there is a surplus and release it again when demand exceeds supply.

smart energyThe energy supply of the future will inevitably become more complex. This is due to the volatility of wind and so-lar energy on the one hand, and to the decentralized nature of their production on the other hand. There is therefore an urgent need to extend the grids. In addition, smart grids – intelligent net-works that make efficiency potential available while distributing energy and increase operational reliability – need to be developed to enable households to benefit from this new efficiency poten-tial. Today, Viessmann already provides a multitude of solutions for increasing energy efficiency and cutting energy costs through the utilization of net-works. These involve home automation,

maximizing individual consumption of photovoltaic power, remote monitor-ing or integrating heat pumps and CHP units into intelligent power grids.

Ice storage system: both storage anda heat sourceIce storage technology is an energy utilization concept with considerable potential for the future which is suitable for buildings of almost all sizes. Energy released when water is frozen is used for heating with the help of a heat pump. Cold energy is converted into heat energy, employing the same technology as in refrigerators, but in the opposite direction. Furthermore, the heat pump harnesses additional renewable energy

sources: sun and air via roof collectors and natural geothermal energy close to underground ice-water reservoirs. This acts as a latent heat storage system, in which energy is stored for a short period and then released when required. In summer months, the system provides chilling for air conditioning in buildings as a natural by-product of the melting ice store.

Another benefit: elaborate drilling for a geothermal probe is avoided.

Vitosorp 200-f Gas adsorption heat pump with zeolite heat exchanger

Designed for single-family homes, the Vitosorp 200-F gas adsorption

heat pump with a rated output of 10  kW (15  kW booster output for DHW heating) achieves particularly high utilization rate of up to 121% (Hs) at 35/28°  C in accordance with VDI 4650-2. Drawing on heat from the air or the ground enables this heat pump to be up to 25% more economical than condensing technology, the most efficient heat generation technology using natural gas until now.

Vitosorp  200-F consists of a zeolite heat pump module and a condensing boiler with both components housed together in a compact enclosure. Using

cost-free heat from the earth, the heat pump module provides the base load for building heating while the integrated gas condensing boiler drives the heat pump process and covers demand peaks on particularly cold days.

up to 80 percent of annual heat outputThe Vitosorp  200-F’s adsorption heat pump module is operated with zeolite (sorbent) and water (cooling medium) – both substances are exceptionally environmentally friendly. With outputs between 1.6 and 4.8  kW, the module can supply up to 80% of required annual heating energy.

Patented zeolite coatingThe zeolite adsorbs steam produced with the help of geothermal energy, thus providing high heat, which is used for heating and DHW generation. The energy from the gas condensing boiler is then used to drive the adsorbed steam out of the zeolite again. The heat released during subsequent condensation of this steam is also channeled into the heating system.

The Vitosorp  200-F’s heat exchanger is covered with a zeolite coating de-veloped and patented by Viessmann. Compared to solutions where the zeo-lite merely surrounds the heat exchang-er as a loosely filled granulate and thus touches its surface at noncontiguous points only, the Vitosorp  200-F’s heat exchanger has a significantly larger contact surface and thus much closer contact with the zeolite. Heat transfer to the heating water is therefore sig-nificantly more efficient. The extensive zeolite surface also provides a high ad-sorption capacity for steam and thus an equally effective sorption process. The system structure and the hydraulic con-nection from the module to just a few heat exchangers and pumps also forms a patented solution.

16

The gas adsorption heat pump Vitosorp 200-F achieves a particularly high seasonal efficiency of up to 121 percent.

The power output range for the gas condensing boiler Vitodens  200-W has been extended to include capacities of 125 and 150 kW. These new units only require 60  percent of the space used by a floor-standing condensing boiler producing a similar output and weigh only half as much.

Another advantage of the new wall-mounted unit is its reliable high operating pressure of 6  bar. Such pressure can be used to supply heat to a building up to 20  floors high.

up to 600 kw in cascade modeIf higher outputs are required, then up to six of the new Vitodens  200-W

Vitodens 200-wHigh output in tiny spaces

This oil condensing boiler will be supplied with a modulating blue-flame burner on request starting September 2013. It regulates its output to current heat demand using continuous adjust-ment, thus reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The new service function enables you to make convenient adjustments using the controller.

The new Vitocaldens  222-F consists of a modern air-to-water heat pump in a split design, a highly efficient gas condensing boiler and a 130-liter drinking water primary cylinder. With an output of up to 9  kW, the heat pump provides the baseload using cost-free heat from outdoor air. The gas condensing boiler with an additional 19 kW is only activated for peak loads and fast DHW generation.

To ensure that the two heat generating modules function together under all operating conditions to an optimum extent, Vitocaldens  222-F features automatic dual-mode point adaptation. It calculates the respective ideal point in

time for automatic switching between modules in line with the system operator’s specifications, especially with regard to economic, ecological or comfort operating modes.

Vitosol 300-TCollector for top efficiency requirement

Vitosol 200-THeat pipe collector for installation in any position

The new Vitosol  300-T is a highly efficient vacuum tube collector based on the heat pipe principle. The two-sided, anti-reflex coating on the Vitosol  300-T’s glass tubes ensures that almost all solar radiation striking the glass surface reaches the absorber. Vitosol  300-T does not require mirrors behind the absorber, a bonus as these become less effective over time due to inevitable dirt and stains. With its temperature shutoff, the collector offers reliable protection against stagnation. The collector is thus particularly suitable for solar systems designed as a central heating back-up.

Vitosol  200-T is a new vacuum tube collector available in models for both private and commercial use. The collector can be installed in virtually any position – horizontally or elevated on flat roofs, vertically on balcony railings and facades, and on pitched roofs.

In the Vitosol  200-T SP2A version, the new collector is especially suitable for DHW heating and central heating backup in single-family homes and for smaller systems in large residential buildings.

Vitosol 200-T SPE is designed for large systems in industry and commerce. The large tube diameter and the corres-pondingly large absorber surfaces ensure the system can be quickly installed, since only a few tubes need to be fitted per square meter of absorber surface.

The new Vitovent 200-D is designed to provide ventilation for individual rooms. It does not require a ducting system and is thus ideal for renovation of existing buildings and use in separate residential units in large residential buildings.

Vitovent  200-D allows complete ventilation concepts to be implemented by using several units in different rooms.

With an air flow rate of up to 55 cubic meters an hour, even large rooms are efficiently ventilated. One unit can thus comfortably supply large rooms up to 75 square meters with fresh air. Several Vitovent  200-D units can be installed for even larger rooms.

Vitovent 200-dIndividual room ventilation for upgrades and new builds

The integrated heat recovery in the new wall-mounted home ventilation system ensures that, despite constant air exchange, valuable heat is not lost in the home, making Vitovent  300-W far superior to conventional window ventilation.

Ventilation with virtually no energy lossVitovent  300-W eliminates odors, moisture and pollutants from the home and replaces stale air with fresh, clean air, thus not only protecting the health of residents but also preserving the building structure. 95  percent of the heat from the extracted air is transferred to the fresh intake air, which saves heating costs.

The integrated automatic bypass allows the cooler outside air to be channeled into rooms during summer nights. Vitovent  300-W thus provides greater living comfort on hot days and displays the Passive House certificate as a seal of quality.

whisper-quiet operationWith sound levels below  39 dB(A) during normal operation, Vitovent  200-D is whisper-quiet. Air flow is slowed during the night, which reduces noise even further.

easy operationVitovent  200-D is particularly easy to operate. Controls to select the operating mode and a filter change indicator are integrated into the inside panel. The ventilation stages can also be switched on manually using the battery-free wireless remote control offered as an optional accessory. A sensor for room air quality is also available. This device measures the carbon dioxide level, humidity and mixed gases (odors) and automatically switches on the required ventilation rate when preset limits are reached.

retrofit possibleVitovent 200-D can be easily fitted into existing buildings. As ducting systems to distribute air are not required, there is no need to dismantle ceilings or open up floors. The only structural alteration to the building fabric is a hole drilled into the outside wall.

up to 240  °C, it is suitable for use in commercial and industrial buildings and for district heating plants. It can be operated optionally with fuel oil EL or S, natural gas, bio-natural gas or LPG.

The Vitomax 300-HW achieves outstanding emission levels. Thus, the nitrogen oxide emissions when natural gas is used are a mere 70 milligrams per cubic meter, and if fuel oil is used

only 150 milligrams per cubic meter are emitted. The low-NOx boiler Vitomax 300-HW is therefore future-proof in its operation, even if the prescribed limits are tightened.

Operation without boiler circulation pumpWide water galleries and a large water content provide excellent natural circulation and reliable heat transfer. A minimum flow rate is not required. That greatly simplifies the hydraulic connection and avoids the need to install a boiler circuit pump for forced circulation.

Easy to assemble and service Because the burner opening and back reversing chamber are fully water-cooled, it is not necessary to construct a firebrick lining. Without the firebrick lining, there is no need for a program for drying the firebricks – thus the Vitomax 300-HW can be commissioned immediately after installation.

The new Vitomax 100-HS (Type M33A) is a very attractively priced steam boiler for every user who needs continuous steam supply, such as laundries and breweries. This new steam boiler is offered in a total of nine output levels from 1.0 to 6.4 metric tons of steam per hour and five pressure levels from 6 to 16 bar. Either fuel oil EL, natural gas, bio-natural

gas, or LPG can be used as fuel in the steam boiler.

Thanks to the water-cooled flue mounting and the especially thick 100 millimeter boiler insulation, the radiation losses from the steam boiler are extremely low. With the integrated economizer, the Vitomax 100-HS achieves a high efficiency level of over 92 percent.

The affordable Vitocrossal 200 (Typ CM2) has a large water content (e.g. 430 liters at 500 kW), thus requiring no minimum flow rate, and – unlike comparable condensing boilers on the market – gets by without a boiler circuit pump. In addition, the series production is suitable for operation with natural gas E and LL as well as with LPG.

With the new 400, 500, and 620 kW output sizes, the unit is especially good for heating administration buildings, schools, universities, and large residential buildings. As a one or multi-boiler system, the Vitocrossal 200 – with a maximum operating pressure of 6 bar, operating temper-atures up to 95°  C, and a safety temperature up to 110°  C – is also suitable for taller multi-story buildings.

The Inox-Crossal heating surface made from stainless steel and MatriX cylinder burners ensure a standard efficiency level of 97% (Hs).

With the Vitobloc 200 EM-20/39, Viessmann is offering a ready-to-use CHP unit that is especially suitable for hotels and swimming pools as well as commercial and industrial operations. Utilization of condensing technology and long maintenance intervals of 6,000 hrs. produce noticeably reduced operating costs and thus economical use. Its new electronics system also fulfills the most demanding technical connection conditions laid down by electricity network operators.

The electrical output of the Vitobloc 200 EM-20/39 is 20 kW; the thermal output is 39 kW. Output modulation between 50 and 100% provides for a long service life – and thus for a correspondingly long period of power generation.

Vitocrossal 300New compact gas condensing boiler

Vitobloc 200Compact module with a new touch display

The new Vitocrossal 300 (Type CT3U) is one of the most compact and light gas condensing boiler units in the output range between 400 and 630 kW. The new boiler in the 500 kW version requires a footprint of less than one and a half square meters (1.45 m2) and thus fits even in narrow spaces. Its low weight of under 640 kilograms (500 kW version) not only simplifies its handling but also places significantly lower demands on the statics of the installation site. Thus the new Vitocrossal 300 is also extremely well-suited for use in loft-based heating systems.

Broad categories of use such as the permissible operating pressure of 5.5 bar, permissible operating temperatures of up to 95 °C and a safety temperature of up to 110 °C enable a wide variety of applications for the boiler in large residential buildings, industrial plants, public buildings and local heating networks.

Two return flow connectorsThe condensing benefit is determined by the return with the lowest temperature. In the Vitocrossal 300, a second return connector allows the heating circuit returns to be divided into a high temperature and a low temperature circuit.

Although energy efficiency is our most important resource and the key to solving energy and climate policy targets, it plays only a subsidiary role in people’s perceptions.

International student poster competitionIn order to make the abstract concept of energy efficiency comprehensible, we have started an art project. An international student poster design competition was carried out under the leadership of Professor Heinz Jürgen Kristahn from the Berlin University of the Arts. It was intended to provide a symbol for energy efficiency and give it a recognizable face. More than 1,000 entries were received from all over the world and evaluated by an international panel of experts. A selection of 140 of the best posters has been compiled into a volume that is available in book shops now.

comparison of alternativesIn the building energy efficiency check the user can choose whether the calculation should focus on the energy efficiency of the building or on the heating system. A combination of both is also possible. Up to four different alternatives can be compared when calculating the potential savings in terms of consumption, costs and CO2 emissions. This includes a comparison of different heating systems – also in combination with a solar thermal system.

Profitability analysisA profitability analysis is integrated into the building energy efficiency check. It determines the amortization time of the investment based on the annual total costs and the costs for each modernization scenario. The new building energy efficiency check specifically addresses the German heating market. It is available for free at www.viessmann.de under “Login für Marktpartner”.

Trade fair visitors were able to carry out the building energy efficiency check themselves. Shown here is a detached house; the program delivers results for larger residential buildings, too.

The consulting program shows the percentage of energy costs that could be saved with each modernization measure.

systems – the building energy efficiency check from Viessmann requires just a few basic details to calculate the potential energy savings achievable through modernization with these heat sources. It is therefore the ideal tool for German trade professionals to advise their customers. The free-of-charge consulting program has now been extended to become the building energy efficiency check. Because it supplies objective results, it is the only program of its kind to be certified by the German Technical Control Board (TÜV Rheinland).

certified assessment processThe Board conducted detailed tests on the assessment process behind the building energy efficiency check. The assessment process determines all values in accordance with current standards and regulations as well as other applicable engineering guidelines. The user receives objective results which can be verified at any time, providing a reliable decision making aid for modernization.

energy Viessmann is especially focusing on biomass, which is sourced close to its headquarters from the company’s own short-rotation plantations. Over an area of 170 hectares, poplars and willow trees have been planted, which are harvested every three years and used as an energy source in the form of woodchips.

Today, bioenergy already covers around 80 percent of the heat demand at the Allendorf site. The long-term goal is to supply all energy using this climate-friendly fuel source. This is governed by the principle of sustainability, in other words only using as much biomass as

can be regrown in the same period of time.

With the strategic sustainability project and the example of its own headquarters, Viessmann has shown that the energy and climate policy targets for 2050 can already be achieved today. All technologies required to do this are currently available on the market.

As a best practice example, the project has already motivated many other companies and decision-makers in

In order to create a flagship project for resource efficiency, climate

protection and job security, Viessmann implemented a strategic sustainability project. As a result, fossil energy con-sumption at the company’s headquarters in Allendorf (Eder) has been reduced by two thirds and CO2 emissions have been cut by over 80 percent.

politics and public administrations to instigate and step up their measures to increase energy efficiency, labor efficiency and material efficiency.

eTanoMIcs: energy concepts for industry and commerceViessmann is also making the necessary know-how available to other industrial companies and medium-sized enterprises. For this purpose, Viessmann founded ETANOMICS Service GmbH. ETANOMICS develops and implements integrated energy concepts for the industry and the manufacturing sector as well as for services such as the hotel and catering industry.

These include consulting services in the area of energy efficiency and energy management. ETANOMICS thus helps to increase the efficiency potential in companies as well as municipalities.

More and more communities are becoming bioenergy villagesMore and more communities in rural areas are moving away from fossil fuels and centrally produced electricity. Instead, they are choosing to become bioenergy villages. Viessmann offers tailored solutions to meet their needs. At the ISH 2013, Viessmann presented its solutions using models.

Biogas plants from schmack and BIofermBiogas plants manufactured by Schmack and BIOFerm process organic waste from landscape maintenance. The methane which is produced from the fermentation of these materials can be used as fuel in a combined heat and power unit (CHP). It is enough to cover the heat and electricity baseload for a bioenergy village.

To cover peaks in heat demand, the Vitoplex 300 boiler can be used with biogas burners.

Biomass boilers from Köb and MaweraIf woodchips or wood pellets are mainly available, the wood combustion systems from Köb and Mawera are the first choice. They are ideal for covering the heat demand and also power supply, for example in combination with an ORC module.

everything from a single source Viessmann is on hand to support municipalities on the path to becoming a bioenergy village right from the very first step. Help is available in the form of feasibility studies and profitability calculations as well as detailed planning in cooperation with local construction companies. Thanks to its experience, Viessmann has the necessary competences for project coordination, technology, construction and commissioning of the entire system.

“alliance for sustainability” In order to anchor the topic of sustainability in the wider public, Viessmann founded the Alliance for

Sustainability (Allianz pro Nachhaltig-keit). As well as leading manufacturers of sustainable products from the building technology and construction materials industry, members of the alliance also include partners from research and science. A central communication platform has been set up in the form of a website at www.allianz-pro-nachhaltigkeit.de.

The small Swiss town of Brugg is well known far beyond the boundaries of

the canton Aargau because of its well-preserved old town, still largely original with buildings up to 800 years old. The town hall is around 300 years old, and was first used for grain storage and then in the course of the centuries for various other purposes. Last year the building was thoroughly modernized. Since then, a micro CHP Vitotwin 300-W in the heating center has been producing heat and electricity simultaneously.

engine’s output of up to 1 kW of electrical energy. Electricity requirements above this level are fulfilled by the public network.

The waste heat from the Stirling engine is used to supply heating to the 450 square meters of effective surface in the building, which is insulated in accordance with the Swiss Minergie standard. Domestic hot water is also generated in this way. If the heating load rises above the 6 kW of the engine, these peak loads are covered by the integrated gas condensing boiler. The total seasonal efficiency of the Vitotwin 300-W stands at up to 96 percent.

satisfaction at the utilities companyThe IBB-Gruppe, the responsible energy supply and service organization in Brugg, is extremely satisfied with the small power station in the recently modernized town hall. “We are pleased with the trouble-free operation”, says David Gut from the IBB. “In winter, the engine is humming 24 hours a day.”

“a technology with a lot of potential.”IBB are principally interested in gaining experience, because they want the Vitotwin 300-W system to be of interest to private facility operators in the region, too.

The small town of Brugg is the principal settlement in the district of Brugg, Aargau canton, and lies near the so-called “Moated Heart of Switzerland”. The town hall of Brugg can be seen in the center of the picture.

The gas boiler Vitoplex 300 covers peak loads.

Kiesel GmbH is a family business with 700 employees at 34 locations

throughout Germany and is one of the largest retailers of construction and material handling machines. Consulting and the development of customer-specified solutions complement the sales and repair service offered by this company.

The new Kiesel logistics center in Stockstadt in Hesse is extremely efficient in its operations. Numerous forklifts and robots work fully automatically in the 13-meter high machine hall of the family

business, guaranteeing the company’s motto of “better handling”. The core of the building is an automated small part store with room for up to 45,000 articles.

energy from the air heats and coolsThe energy system of the logistics center is exactly aligned to demand. The company e-con AG in Memmingen was responsible for planning. Their task was to find a solution that was energy-saving, environmentally friendly and economic. The relatively mild climate in the Rhine valley was one of the primary

reasons for the installation of an air/water heat pump that takes its energy from the surrounding air. Kiesel decided to follow the recommendation of the planners, on the basis of their extensive knowledge about the manufacture of industrial heat pumps, and took two KWT units.

of the building by adding on modules. The industrial solutions technology has to keep up high standards even after later extensions have been built.” For this reason, district heating pipes were laid so that the planned presentation hall, as well as the training center and the service center, can be heated or cooled, Fuchs continued.

The heat pump installation in the 10,000-square-meter logistics center at Kiesel GmbH is one of the few of this size in Germany that uses air as a heat source.

The industrial heat pumps are designed so that at an outside temperature of -5° C they supply sufficient heating energy for hall and office space.

The industrial heat pumps are configured so that they deliver sufficient heating energy for the production and office areas, up to an outside temperature of -5°  C. One special feature of the construction is that there is no real separation of storage space from office space. In order to maintain an even heat distribution, the building has concrete core activation (underfloor heating) and radiant ceiling panels that also perform a cooling function in summer.

screw compressors produce a flow temperature of up to 45° cTwo powerful heat exchangers on the roof of the boiler house draw the heat from the ambient air. Screw compressors in the KWT heat pumps produce from this a flow temperature of up to 45°  C, which is sufficient for heating and DHW generation for almost the whole year.

For the purposes of thawing out iced-up heat exchangers, conventional heat pump installations draw the necessary energy from the heating system. However, this procedure is inefficient. The use of a sub-cooler in the refrigeration circuit, on the other hand, as used in the heating center of the logistics center, offers considerable advantages: Heat can be stored in a

container at no cost and can be directed to the iced-up air cooler as required. This means that the efficiency of the heat pump is additionally increased by the sub-cooler.

gas boiler covers peak loads A Viessmann gas boiler Vitoplex 300 with an output of 1,950 kW only provides the additional heat necessary to cover peak loads or for redundancy purposes.

The Alois Müller GmbH from Memmingen was responsible for installation and commissioning. Andreas Müller, Managing Director of the Alois Müller GmbH, came to a positive conclusion, “In spite of the size and complexity of the system it was installed without any difficulty.”

aktivhaus – das grundlagenwerkby Prof. Manfred Hegger

In Central Europe, buildings are responsible for more than 40  per-

cent of energy consumption. The environmental impact of heating, cooling, ventilating, lighting and electricity is therefore high. The active house is a logical development of current building standards. It places the user – his needs and abilities – in a completely new relationship with the building. From an energy perspective, it does not only minimize consumption. It creates a new, almost symbiotic relationship with its surroundings. Beyond passive strategies, it harnesses renewable energy from the sun and wind in order to almost completely cover its own energy requirements.

The reference book “Aktivhaus – Das Grundlagenwerk” published parallel to ISH Energy 2013 is the very first comprehensive compilation of all important findings on planning active houses. Experts from different areas explain their points of view in essays, articles and interviews, addressing the key issue of how active houses will change the architecture of the future from very different angles. The book also describes the basic principles behind developing the idea of the active house in detail, which is helpful for anybody involved in building projects as a guideline for planning active houses. The reader can find out about everything that matters concerning active houses – how they are developed and what

About the author

Prof. Dipl.-Ing. M. Sc. Econ. Manfred Hegger, born in 1946, studied architecture at the University of Stuttgart and Ulm Design College and systems engineering at the Technical University of Berlin and planning at the University of London.

He started his career as a lecturer at institutes of higher education in Stuttgart, Kassel, Hanover and Dublin and has been head of the department of design and energy-efficient construction at the Technical University of Darmstadt since 2001.

Prof. Hegger chairs national and international committees and has received numerous awards and accolades for his work – including the European Solar Prize, the Sir Robert Matthews Award of the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA) and the Solar Decathlon twice and the German Build-ing Contractors Award “High Quality – Affordable Costs” five times.

components are used to implement them. In addition, the book includes the principles of sustainable and energy-efficient construction, the general rules, planning tools and technical details. Fourteen real-life examples of buildings – ranging from residential housing, non-residential constructions, new builds to modernized buildings – show how the principles of the active house have been applied to create architecture in practice. These examples also make it the standard manual for energy-efficient construction.

The outlook shows further development possibilities. In addition to construction standards, the book focuses on the role of buildings in the context of urban development. This is especially important, as energy networks of urban buildings – energy-autonomous neighborhoods and, ultimately, cities – open up new unforeseen images of future cities.
