1930 Model 1500 Moore Speedcrane by Larry Kotkowski Member Fob

The Moore Speedcrane was developed by Roy and Charles Moore of Chicago, IL., they manufactured Speedcranes in Ft. Wayne Indiana. The Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company from Manitowoc, Wi. was looking to diversify in their business and entered into an agreement with the Moore’s to manufacture the Speedcrane. In the early 1930’s for financial reasons it became the Manitowoc Speedcrane Company. The model 1500 pictured was built in 1930 and was leased to various companies by the factory beginning in 1931. The price new was $11,590.66. On July 1, 1931 it was shipped to Forsythe Bros. dealership in Rochester , NY. The machine was leased by Raymond Concrete Pile and McClintock-Marshall Company during 1931 and 1932. McClintock-Marshal worked on the Empire State Building, however this machine appears to have arrived late for that project. From 1933 to 1936 it was rented to several companies including S.M. Seisel DuPont Cmpany and W. VA. P & P Company.

In 1936 it was sold to the DuPont Company for $4,306.36 through the Phillips Machinery Company. The crane originally had a 4 cylinder Hercules TX0 engine. In 1948 it was re-powered with a Cummins HBI-600 diesel. The next bit of history on this machine is that it was sold by Equipment Exchange from Oakmont PA. to Lang Construction in Pittsburg, PA in 1962. The next owners were Lou and Erma McMasters of Hickory, PA. We purchased it from them in 2008. Since the machine was used for hook work primarily the draw works were in very good condition. The cab was in poor condition, but it was all there. In the summer of 2009 we removed the entire cab and

cleaned it up good. After cleaning and sand blasting it, we took it into the shop and did quite a bit more disassembly. All clutches and brakes were removed. We had to remove the main drive chain case and repair it. Much of the con-trol linkage was removed, mainly to clean it up and get it freed up. There were over thirty broken bolts in the ma-chinery deck casting, all of the track pads were removed, some had to be repaired and all of the pins had to be re-placed. The early model 1500’s had shaft drive all the way to the tumblers. The machine has cast car body. All of the gears are meant to run in oil. We removed all of the oil sump castings and removed about a wheel barrow full of crud. We had to rebuild the track adjusters. Continued on Page 8 Larry Kotkowski

Meeting Minutes 4/23/10 IWFAI Membership Meeting The meeting was called to order by President Cubby Winkel at 6:04 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited. Dimitrie Toth made the motion to accept the posted minutes of the 4/24/09 meeting, Bill Hollyday second motion accepted. Treasurer’s report read, Larry Freeman made the motion to accept the report, Ray Williams second motion accepted. Bill Mitchell spoke of a by-laws change proposal to the membership, that the board can change, add or delete by-laws as needed. Larry Yartz questioned the legality. Bill said that the Constitution & By-laws are separate. Bill Hollyday questioned if there is a change the membership needs to be made aware of it. It was mentioned that any change can be reversed. The Constitution can’t be changed unless the members vote on it. Much discussion. Mike Stiles wanted to know what had happened. It was explained that a member who sells on ebay refuses to change and is selling reproduction and counterfeits without telling buyers. The board felt that we the IWFAI were condoning bad behavior and we needed to take action. They were not following the code of ethics. Cubby spoke about not disclosing information to buyers on ebay. Bill Hollyday made the motion and was put to the floor The IWFAI will no longer accept membership from any member who deals with reproductions or counterfeit fobs who does not disclose that information, Ray Williams second motion accepted. Let the newsletter editor know if you have anything to submit. A moment of silence for all the deceased members, Lawrence Gallogly, William Hoffmeir, John Curtis and Charles McKinsey. Butch Jordan said next years show dates will be May 6 & 7, 2011. We were bumped back a week due to the hotel having another event. Mike Stiles mentioned booking with a demand date. Butch made calls to lock in on a weekend, but it didn’t happen. We are pursuing another location. Butch reported that the hotel is only giving us a 1 year contract. Cubby mentioned that Butch is doing a good job. Cubby stated that we are looking at updating the website, he presented 25 pages of mock-ups, he’s hoping this will produce more memberships and draw more people to the show. New Business: Change the general meeting from Friday night to Thursday night, so that the hall can be open longer. Cubby mentioned having a fob for next year, a new commemorative fob only for 100 year anniversary’s. He men-tioned the Ronald Reagan saddle fob that would only be available if you attended the show. Much discussion, how to get one if you don’t attend, what will be the cost, hasn’t worked. Etc. Status of the board: Bill Mitchell, Ben Jensen and Cubby Winkel term has expired and they are willing to stand for re-election. Ray Rothlisberger made the motion to accept the 3 people for re-election, Bill Holly-day second, motion accepted. Mike Stiles and Tom Trenka were upset that they were asked to leave the hall, in past years nothing has been said. Cubby mentioned that sometimes we need to reinforce some issues. The dealers and show committee need to set up before the public is allowed in the hall. Bill Holliday made the motion to adjourn, Ray Rothlisberger second Meeting adjourned 7:10 p.m. Respectfully submitted by Louise Harting – Secretary/Treasurer

Secretary & Newsletter Editor’s Report We are having our third annual toy auction in conjunction with the watch fob show again this year, if you have any items you would like to put in the auction please contact Chuck Sword at 440-816-1882 or [email protected]. If you hurry you can e-mail a picture of your item and Chuck will put it in his flier. Those of you who would like tables, I need your money before the show, not the day of the show. We need to know how many tables to order and to do that we need your reservation. Thank you!!!!! We return monies if you can’t make the show. Fobs – Membership Fobs are required to be engraved with your name and member number. Depending on when Butch gets the fobs, in past years those attending the show have been getting their fobs first. Check your registra-tion form, Mail or Pick up at Show. Those who request it sent by mail will not be getting them until sometime af-ter the show, usually mid to the end of May. Please do not call me and ask where are my FOBS? If you don’t get them by mid June call me. We’ve been trying to encourage members to receive their newsletters via e-mail. You get the newsletter weeks be-fore the snail mail crowd and in living color. I think when the new website is operational you will be able to go to the address and look it up there. As usual people have been telling me they aren’t getting the newsletter. If you change your e-mail address‘, your mailing address please let me know, I can‘t read minds and the computer doesn‘t tell me that you changed carriers. By-laws changes: You will find a copy of the by-laws the areas hi-lited are those that will be voted on at the general membership meeting on Thursday, May 5. You have to attend the meeting to vote. Dues are based on a calendar year, not by when you mailed in your dues, so with that said, if we don’t receive your dues by June you will be taken off the roster. If you have an 10 on your label that means you have paid through 10. If you have an 11, 12 or 13 you have paid 2 or 3 years in advance. This will be your last newsletter if you have an 10 on your label, unless you submit $20.00 to re-new your membership. I would hope that you would remain members. E-Mail members if you have a question on your membership just e-mail me. If anyone has something they would like to see in the newsletter please let me know. I am desperate for articles, pictures of your collections, questions. Hope to see you at the show, otherwise have a great year and I apologize for any errors. Louise Harting – [email protected]

Page 7 Hello from the West

Things are fine in this part of the country. Had a little more rain than usual for this part of the desert, 3 or 4 days in a row for a BIG TOTAL of 2” or more but lots of sunshiny days. That’s enough of the weather report it’s show time. So let’s get to Cleveland, Ohio and have a great a time this year. There are a few changes in the show schedule. The membership meeting is on Thursday night so that the fob room can be open all day & night on Friday, we will not be closing for dinner and a meeting. Check the show schedule elsewhere in the newsletter. The auction will be on Satur-day afternoon as in the past so get your items in, the consignment information is also in the newsletter. Let’s make your hotel reservations, the cut-off date to guarantee the rate of $85.00 per room is April 25, 2011. You can always cancel if you can’t make it, but let’s hope not. The show is at the same hotel, The Crowne Plaza Cleveland Airport, 7230 engle Road, Middleburg Heights, Ohio, 440-243-4040. Make sure to tell them you are with the watch fob club. We have rooms booked for Wed., Thurs., Fri., Sat., and Sun. The dates are May 4-8, 2011. We can always use ideas for future fobs, get your ideas to Larry Kotkowski. Once again we will have a free Sunday morning breakfast for those who stay at the hotel or Saturday night. Louise will have the breakfast tickets at the secretaries table. That’s all for now, see you in Middleburg Heights in May. Thanks Butch Jordan – Vice President

Page 8 continued from Page 5 1930 Model Speedcrane We got the digger dogs and steering jaw clutches operable. We replaced all of the deck plating with new diamond plate. The engine ran well. We replaced may gaskets, all of the fuel lines, rewired it and put on a new starter

and rebuilt generator. We replaced all of the gauges with old style gauges salvaged from other machines. We replaced almost the entire framework for the cab using the old ones for patterns. This involved a great deal of drilling. Some of the framework was so far gone we had to figure out how it was made originally. The entire framework was riveted together with steel rivets just like it was originally. All of the sheeting on the cab was replaced; again all of this was riveted in place exactly like it was originally. We built new doors and replaced all of the glass. There was not one weld on the under-carriage or the cab. It is hard to explain all of the work that went into this restoration. There were countless

hours of figuring, measuring, drilling etc. The Harry Young Chapter of Northeast Ohio – a chapter of the Historical Construction Equipment Asso-ciation meets at our shop every Wednesday. We have quite a crew of dedicated volunteers who help on those restoration projects. These volunteers include Jerry Kuhen, Dave Metcalf, Andy Peterek, Fran Pe-terek, Matt Lauer, Doug Carter, Mike Miller, Josh Kochy, Joseph Kotkowski, Josh Ferrel and Harry Young. When we do projects like this we also tend to work up a hearty appetite. A special thank you to Ben Kotkowski for preparing great meals for us on our work nights. On behalf of my brother Ronnie and

I, we want to thank all of you. We refurbished the boom and rigged up the week before our show in April 2010.

We took it to

several shows this year and it ran very

good. It can be seen

working on you-tube if you search

for Manitowoc Speedcrane.
