What is Cloud Computing? The use of computing resources (hardware and software) that are delivered as a service over a network (typically the Internet).
The name comes from the use of a cloud-shaped symbol as an abstraction for the complex infrastructure it contains in system diagrams. Source: Wikipedia

Cloud NFP Case Studies A business education charity founded in 2002.
It supports the movement of more than 1,000 employers and 130 schools and colleges, to raise the aspirations of 16- to 19-year-olds.
When the charity was set up, the employees were given very limited access to the building's IT systems, which worked well at the time.

Cloud Computing Slide 71 © AdvantageNFP by Redbourn Business Systems Limited
Cloud NFP Case Studies The organisation has grown considerably over the years and there are now several regional managers based around the UK. With the incumbent system, the regional workforce found it difficult to work productively.
The solution was to move all IT systems to a hosted desktop solution. Now everyone can access the system and their emails remotely, the employees in London can work from home and IT is being used consistently with everyone using the same software versions.
Cloud NFP Case Studies
"Since moving all our systems to a hosted desktop last year, the charity has become more efficient and productive. It has completely changed the way our organisation works"
Yvonne Plows, Career Academies

Cloud NFP Case Studies Over the years Sport Relief has created many special charity moments, like John Bishop's week of hell, David Walliams' epic swims and Helen Skelton's south pole challenge. Together translating into over £175m raised for UK charities since 2002.
From a technology perspective, these huge one-off events present a real challenge. How do you create an IT infrastructure that is able to cope with such a massive volume of traffic in a short space of time? Source: www.guardian.co.uk

Cloud Computing Slide 74 © AdvantageNFP by Redbourn Business Systems Limited
Cloud NFP Case Studies Not only that, how do you do it cost effectively and, most importantly, making sure everyone who wants to make a donation is able to?
Thankfully the answer to this challenge lies in cloud computing. Rather than having a room full of servers that go unused for over 300 days of the year, cloud computing offers the opportunity to scale-up capacity when you need it.
This approach means that Sport Relief can scale up by a factor of around 400 times in the peak period.

Cloud Computing Conclusions
Cloud Computing is the subject of huge marketing hype, technical analysis and debate. It’s the “darling” of the media.
Undoubtedly for some NFP organisations there are economic and technical benefits to be gained by adopting cloud solutions.
Cloud Com puting Slide 75 © AdvantageNFP by Redbourn Business System s Lim ited

Cloud Computing Conclusions
Not all applications are suitable for the cloud, and there are plenty of potential obstacles, such as concerns over privacy and security.
However, cloud is evolving and the number of UK organisations, including NFPs, adopting cloud solutions is increasing rapidly.
