This time of the year I often have people saying to me ‘oh things must be starting

to wind down at school’. This causes me to smile as Term 4 is probably the most

frenetic term of all, and follows a rather busy Term 3.

Here are just some of the Karori Upper School highlights.

During Term 3 we had the magnificent House Music competition towards the end

of term. The extraordinary thing this year was the amount of student innovation and

creativity shown within the chosen pieces. The annual Swainson Concert was the

show case for the talented musicians in the school.

In Term 4 Leadership appointments were made for 2012 - involving speeches

and voting; the Fashion Parade highlighted the creative skills in the technology

department and introduced girls to modeling and dance; Old Girls Day saw nearly

100 Old Girls – of all ages, converge on Marsden for Chapel, Breakfast, Assembly,

Tours, AGM and of course the Decade Dinner.

The Cultural Awards night provided a venue where the music, drama, debating and

performance in the school could be celebrated – a truly creative experience. Our

sportswomen were celebrated at the Sports Awards dinner the next evening and the

crowd was impressed by the large number of girls who have represented Marsden at

Wellington, North Island and National level.

The inaugural Senior Art Exhibition displayed the diverse and imaginative work by

the Painting, Photography and Design students. The annual Creativity Symposium

occurred recently for year 9 students. For three days they were informed,

investigated, imagined and created round the theme of Earthquakes. One highlight

was the live Skyping session with students from Avonside Girls.

Of course through all this time the senior students had mock exams and students

in years 11-13 are currently sitting their final NCEA, Cambridge and Scholarship

examinations.

Personally the Chapel Service and breakfast for the year 13 students was a moving

and inclusive end to formal school for the students.

Still to come are more examinations, the community carol service, the school carol

service, prize giving, final assembly and the ultimate in events – the Leavers Ball.

So school is certainly winding up for the year – but in a grand and exciting fashion!

I hope that the Christmas season brought love and happiness for

you and your family.

Congratulations! How wonderful to be a member of the Marsden

community in 2013.

At the Karori Prizegiving in December I spoke about a quality

I believe is inherent in our community but one which we must

acknowledge and foster. I would like to briefly recap as we start

the new year.

History is full of incredible achievers – people who’ve succeeded

in business, sport, the arts and science, who’ve become great

leaders, inventors and heroes, or who’ve overcome the odds to

achieve things that no-one else has done before.

When we talk about someone’s success, we often talk about

their natural ability, high intelligence or grounding in education.

But why is it that some people with these attributes succeed, yet

others don’t?

This is a question that’s vexed the experts for hundreds of

years. It’s also been the subject of recent research conducted

by Dr Angela Duckworth. Angela is a former student at Harvard

College and the University of Oxford, and now an assistant

professor in psychology at America’s University of Pennsylvania.

Before she started her university study, Angela was a high school

maths teacher. She often wondered why many students who’d

done well in intelligence tests failed to achieve in school exams,

while others earned high grades despite not doing so well at

the intelligence tests. She asked herself: What personal qualities

beyond intelligence lead students to become leaders in their

fields?

Angela looked at research and eventually concluded that

one personality trait appeared to be the deciding indicator of

outstanding achievement. She called it ‘grit’.

So what is grit? Angela defines it as “having passion and

perseverance for a long-term goal”. In other words, it’s about

having the stamina and self-discipline to work hard for what

you want to achieve; having the self-control to resist distractions

and temptations; and having the courage to overcome whatever

obstacles get in the way. It’s about focusing on winning the

marathon, not the sprint.

It’s an attitude reflected in a comment made by the famous

physicist Albert Einstein, who said, “It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s

just that I stay with problems longer.”

My challenge to us all this year is to aim for the marathon – stay

longer on problems, show self control and courage – be gritty

(but do so with grace!)

Your Child’s Safety is Important! Please do not drive in the school grounds

when delivering or collecting children.

Pupils must be dropped outside the

school grounds at all times, unless special

arrangements have been made. As there

have been a number of “close calls”

involving cars and students, the Vera Street

entrance is closed from 3.00pm-4.00pm

and the Donald Street entrance is closed

from 8.00am-4.00pm for safety reasons.

Please respect our neighbours and avoid

turning into their driveways whenever

possible. Some of our neighbours have

reported damage to their drive and

surrounding grass edges. We also ask that

all drivers observe the yellow ‘no stopping’

lines on the roads near the school.

AbsenceParents are required to notify the School

by 8.30am for absence or lateness. THIS

IS MOST IMPORTANT to assist us with

checking attendance. Marsden Karori

operates an e-mail absence address,

[email protected] and also a

voicemail service on 476 8792 extension

701. Messages may be left 24 hours a day

using either of these services.

If a pupil is absent, she should bring a note

addressed to the Form Teacher or Tutor on

Co-curricular activitiesMarsden offers a large range of

co-curricular sporting and cultural

the school teaching a variety of musical

instruments, speech and drama. The

school also co-ordinates a number of

cultural and sporting activities – further

details are below.

Cultural Activities at MarsdenMiss Sarah Wilson will be overseeing

We also offer a simple online purchase

option through the OfficeMax MySchool

Marsden Karori and then select your child’s

class and subject lists. Orders over $57.50

qualify for free delivery to your home or

workplace.

In Years 1-6 exercise books are provided by

the school.

Please note that students using personal

digital devices on a regular basis at school

are likely to require considerably less

stationery, particularly folders and refill.

Personal technology for studentsTechnology has become an increasingly

important feature of learning for 21st

century students. Each year, more and

more of our teaching resources are accessed

online; technological capability, both in and

beyond the classroom is vital.

Although it is not compulsory for students

to have their own devices, students from

Year 7 through to Year 13 are welcome to

bring them. Their work will be saved to

Cloud storage. The school will continue to

have a wide range of technology available

for student use.

We do not prescribe or recommend

particular digital devices, but suggest you

consider purchasing protective covering for

the device, as students move frequently

between classrooms.

The school requires devices to have internet

accessibility and to contain a recording

function. As with other belongings, it is

the students’ responsibility to look after

their equipment. School insurance does not

cover the loss or damage of such personal

items. The school will do its best to support

Civil Defence and Emergency ProceduresIn an emergency the school will look after

all pupils until they can be collected. The

school makes provision for such situations

but relies on parental assistance for food

supplies. Food is required to feed the entire

school population for a minimum of 3 days.

We never know when an emergency might

occur so we would appreciate all items to

the school by Friday 8 February. If food

is not received by this date there will be a

small charge to your account to cover the

purchase of such items by the school. The

expiry date on the food should show a date

later than December 2013. The exception

to this expiry date is long life milk but

please try for a distant expiry date there

too.

Students should take the food to their class

teacher (Marsden Primary) or Form/Tutor

Teacher (Y7-13 students). Each student

should bring at least two items of food

(but any extra supplies will be gratefully

received). The food will be given to the City

Mission in December if unused in 2013.

hardware and software issues rests with the

owner.

The stationery list includes a USB flash

drive, for use in all subjects. This is an

invaluable device whether or not students

are using their own technology. We

encourage students to name their USB

device in case it gets lost.

The flash drive should be used in

conjunction with cloud storage as a means

of transporting information from home to

school – it should not be relied upon as the

sole backup. We recommend that students

back up their work at home as well as in

the Cloud.

In Year 2 this year, we will be running a trial

with iPads in the classroom. There will be a

set of iPads for use in the Primary School,

shared amongst the classes, however if

your daughter owns an iPad she is very

welcome to bring it to school.

Please note that in a civil defence situation,

only caregivers or those people you have

specifically named as emergency contacts

can collect your daughter or son from

school. This applies to all students from

Preschool to Year 13. Each year you are

asked to check your contact details and

this form also lists the emergency contacts

you have provided. Please take the

opportunity to update this information so

that it is accurate in case of a civil defence

emergency.

Police Vetting and Self Declaration formsThe school endeavours to provide the

safest possible environment for students.

Staff are police checked on a regular

basis and the school also requires any

adults with responsibility for, or contact

with, students to agree to a police check

or to sign a self declaration form.

This includes parents who volunteer

to coach or manage a sports team or

cultural group, who accompany a school

field trip, accompany camps etc. The

staff member involved with the activity

will provide the appropriate forms to

volunteers or these can be obtained

from Lyn Brooks directly.

The names of all adult volunteers will

be made available to the parents of

all students participating in any trip,

excursion, sports or cultural activity or

camp. This may be via a further letter

or email to parents if a first letter is

sent seeking volunteers. If a parent has

concerns about the suitability of any

volunteer (from a view of student safety)

they should raise this with the staff

member arranging the activity.

Sunsmart policy and hats As part of general SunSmart strategies

students are required to wear a school

hat or cap when outside during Terms 1

and 4 between 11am and 3.30pm.

Hats are available at the uniform shop

and should be worn during lunch,

sport, excursions and other outdoor

activities.

Christmas Decorations for Sprott HouseYear 10 art students were commissioned

to make Christmas decorations for Sprott

House and were given a Christmas

themed landscape painting project that

was eventually copied onto acetate and

transformed into stained glass windows for

the sunny corridor at Sprott House.

Co-ordinator from Sprott, Anne Hessian, is

very appreciative of the work the students

did and now the images are installed they

look great. The elderly residents have

recognised many of the local Wellington

features in the girls work.

The images will be on display until early in

the new year.

Marsden Primary

A very warm welcome to the families joining us at Preschool and Marsden Primary for the first time this year. We look forward to getting to know you and wish you and your child well in the years ahead at school.

Reflection on the end of 2012: The school year closed with several celebrations. In Preschool the children said goodbye to some of their five-year old friends who were moving on to school. At Prize Giving we acknowledged our Year 6 leavers on their way to the Middle School. We also celebrated the successes of many of the girls in their academic subjects, in their sporting achievements and in their cultural pursuits.

We were all excited to meet Santa and his helpers as they spread a little joy amongst the children of Preschool to Year 6. Year 5 girls were delighted that the weather held out for them to try at sailing at Worser Bay. Then we had a fun filled day of Christmas craft making when we worked in mixed age groups.

The week finished with our annual Toy Service at St Mary’s Church where bags full of donated toys were gathered to send to children in the care of Barnardos. Thank you to Mrs Janne Shewan and Mrs Sylvia Cavanagh of the Girls’ Friendly Society for arranging this.

Donations to World Vision – thank you to the Year 6 girls of the Primary Committee who met and decided how to allocate our $1000 donation for resources that had been gathered throughout the year at our Friday Chapel services. The girls chose the following: build a well, train a teacher, build a toilet, fruit trees, warm blankets, school materials and seeds. Thank you also to those who regularly donate their coins: it gradually mounts up and can make a big difference in the lives of many children.

Happy New Year!
