    Dear Parents

    We are delighted to be able to provide you with a comprehensive guide to the extra-curricular programme running at the School next term.

    This booklet will provide you with an overview of all clubs; those run by membersof the teaching staff as well as those run by external professional coaches.

    As with last term, all clubs (with the exception of training & mini-musketeers) will fallinto line with the following after-school schedule: Session 1 (3.30 4.15), Session 2(4.15 5.00) and Session 3 (5.00 5.45).

    As in previous terms, all clubs are run on a first come, first served basis. With thisin mind please do not delay in returning the booking form, on the back page, toavoid disappointment.

    Advanced Music Theory (By Invitation)This group enables boys to pursue their musical studies by gaining an

    understanding of advanced Music Theory and General Musicianship. Designed

    essentially to further the musical development of the Cathedral Choristers, the

    boys consequently benefit from theory tuition beyond the standard of Grade 5.

    When: Wed before School

    Max: Invitation Only

    After-School TrainingAfter-School Training provides all boys within the School (Years 4-8) with an

    additional opportunity to fine tune existing skills and learn new techniques.Training is open to ALL boys, regardless of whether they are involved in teams,

    looking to break into a team, or merely looking to enjoy the sport. There is NO

    limit on numbers.

    All Play Chess

    A brand new opportunity for Chess lovers everywhere. All play Chess isexactly what it says on the tin an all in competition pitting boys from different

    age groups against each other on a weekly basis.

    Art Club

    Art Club (12.50-1.20pm) gives all boys the opportunity to continue thedevelopment of their artistic eye. Under the supervision of Miss Lucas, boys

    will undertake art projects which are not attached to the curriculum.

    Basketball with Guildford Heat

    We have again teamed up with Guildford Heat to provide the boys with an

    extension of the Basketball already offered on the curriculum. Chad McKnight,

    one of The Heats American superstars will be on hand each week to pass on his

    knowledge and expertise to the boys.

    Board Games

    The purpose of board games club is to provide the boys with the opportunity to

    play a range of traditional games. In the process they also acquire many skillsconnected with sharing, taking turns, winning and losing! The club is only open

    to boys in Year 3.

    Computer Club

    An opportunity for boys to explore the internet (supervised by a member ofstaff), play some of the computer games available on the network. It also

    provides time for the boys to improve their basic keyboard and mouse skills.

    Cricket Club

    MAL Skills Coaching work on all technical aspects of the game: batting,bowling, fielding and wicket keeping. Other major aspects of cricket including

    movement and balance, tactical awareness and leadership, are also of key focus.

    Drop-in ComputersPriority is given to boys who have projects to complete or need to under-take

    internet research. If the room is not fully occupied, other boys may come in toplay game. This is only possible if there are spare computers. These sessions

    do not need to be pre-booked, just turn up.

    Elementary Music Theory (by Invitation)

    This newly formed group will enable boys to pursue their musical studies bygaining an understanding of Music Theory. Designed essentially to further the

    History Club

    History Club looks at different History topics from a variety of sources, but with

    a particular emphasis on looking at and discussing DVDs both drama and

    documentary. With preparations taking place for the summer production ofThe Vackees, we will be particularly featuring the study of film and other

    source material from the home front of World War II.

    Hockey (After-School)

    Hockey Club will give boys an opportunity to improve their existing range of

    skills, whilst developing new and more advanced techniques, in a small-sided

    game environment. In order to develop the boys skill level and understandingfurther, we have brought in an outside professional coach, to help us. Boys

    MUST have gumshields & shinpads.

    Judo

    The Judo Club is not just about self-defence, it is also about directing energy

    into something creative and constructive, building up self-confidence, co-ordination and learning to work with a partner or as part of a team, in a fun and

    enjoyable environment.

    Junior ChoirThis major ensemble gives boys in the lower years the opportunity to develop

    their singing skills and provides a focus for vocal performance by younger boys.In the Lent Term the Junior Choir will perform in at least one concert and after

    half-term will be involved in preparations for the House Music Competition.

    Junior DramaJunior Drama is a fun way of providing an on stage experience with full

    costume, lights and scenery. By the start of the Lent term the boys have been

    cast and they are expected to be off scripts by half term so they can concentrateand enjoy the acting. Excitement mounts as performance dates come closer. We

    try and put on at least two performances for boys and parents. Junior Drama is

    a two term commitment.

    Junior Instrumental Group JIGThis popular new ensemble provides boys in the lower years with the

    opportunity to develop their instrumental ensemble skills in an unpressured

    environment. Repertoire is of an easier standard than that of the main SchoolOrchestra and the group is open to all boys in Yrs 3 5 playing any instrument.

    The nature of the group depends on the boys themselves and the instruments

    they play.

    Lighting Club

    Lighting Club requires a two term commitment leading up to producing thelights and sound for the Summer Term Production. No previous experience

    required. The club will be run with the help of Wizard Lighting.

    Mini Musketeers (Junior Fencing)

    Mini Musketeers uses equipment designed to give children a safe and exciting

    introduction to fencing. The lessons help promote hand-eye co-ordination,

    balance, concentration, inter-personal skills, self-control, and confidence.

    Monopoly

    Board games for the more mature individuals!! Are you the next property

    tycoon? Do you enjoy seeing people giving you rent money? Why not build up

    Poetry Club

    Are you a poet and didnt know it? Well, you've come to the right place to findout. Writing poems can be fun when you juggle all the words and the rhythms

    together to make them exciting. Poems can be about anything and come inmany different forms.

    Really Wild Club

    Really Wild Club is designed to generate interest in anything to do with

    nature. Most activities are hands on.

    Quizmasters

    Quizmasters is a Club in which boys battle with the buzzers to win points for

    their team, answering general knowledge questions, along the lines ofUniversity Challenge.

    Schola Cantorum Chamber Choir (by Invitation)

    This specialist vocal ensemble is for senior boys (by invitation only) andprovides high standard singing at and advanced level. Although not rehearsingevery week, Schola Cantorum will perform in at least one concert and after half-

    term will be involved in preparations for the House Music Competition.

    Science Club (Junior)

    A weekly chance to carry out some different experiments and activities from all3 areas of science. These activities will vary from making bubbles inside

    bubbles to growing plants to using magnets and building electrical circuits.

    Science Club (Senior)

    A weekly chance to do some experiments that are not on the CE syllabus, or todo a bit of investigating within your own areas of interest. These may be in

    Biology (animals or plants?) Chemistry (acids and alkalis?) or Physics (levers,

    pendulums, electronics?)

    Senior Drama ProductionThe VackeesRehearsals for the Senior Drama biennial major production will take place on

    Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays at Lunch during the Lent Term.

    NOT ALL BOYS WILL BE REQUIRED AT ALL REHEARSALS.

    Boys may sign up for other Clubs and attend those Clubs when available, but

    rehearsals must take priority.

    Auditions will be held during November and a cast list with the rehearsal

    schedule issued before the end of term. This should help boys know their

    commitment.

    Senior FencingUnder the instruction of Neale Thomas, Senior Fencing has gone from strength

    to strength. A natural progression from Mini Musketeers sees the boys develop

    new skills, whilst refining their existing talents. As the boys develop, they are

    encouraged to enter a range of events.

    Senior Rock Band

    This popular ensemble is open to all boys in Yrs 6 8 playing an appropriate

    instrument to a sufficient standard. Essentially run by the boys themselves witha minimum degree of staff interference, the group provides an excellent

    opportunity for boys to develop their musical experience through a non-classicalenvironment.

    ShootingThis is proving to be one of the most popular of clubs. The boys receive expert

    tuition both theoretical and practical and use the latest in Laser Technology, as

    used by the German and British National Squads. All courses are designedaccording to the ability of the group.

    Tennis Club

    A lot of emphasis on developing the ABCS (agility, balance, co-ordination andspeed), which are core skills required for all sports. As development grows,

    more emphasis is placed on stroke technique and players can start to understandthe basic tactics of the game.

    Warhammer

    Warhammer is a fantasy based game of strategy and planning. Warhammer

    does not just involve the playing of the games, but the painting and gluing of

    models, building an army and the discussion of plans. The background for

    games are very detailed, provoking much thought. Boys MUST have their

    own pieces.

    Website ClubThis club will allow boys to build, maintain and develop their own web spaces,

    using a variety of different media and equipment (e.g. digital camera, video,audio). The boys can create a website or just a simple webpage, or if they would

    prefer they can make a short movie or podcast. All of the work carried out will

    be kept safe and secure in a protected online environment.

    Farnborough FCs goals are to develop skilled, confident and creative players;

    make the game fun to practise and play; teach good sportsmanship, respect for

    all and value winning without having to sacrifice character or performance.

    Additional Information:

    Lunchtime Clubs will run from either 12.50 pm - 1.20 pm or 1.20 pm -1.50 pm(please check confirmation forms).

    After-School Clubs will run as follows (unless otherwise stated on

    confirmations):

    Session 1: 3.30 pm - 4.15 pm

    Session 2: 4.15 pm - 5.00 pm

    Session 3: 5.00 pm - 5.45 pm

    All After-School Clubs (Sessions 2 & 3) will go to tea, prior to theiractivities (with the exception of after-school training). Parents will

    be charged for Tea, on the end of term bill.

    If your son is in a Session 3 activity he will spend between 4.15 pm and 5.00

    pm in prep class. (In these cases he will automatically be placed on the

    register)

    The group allocation for both Cricket and Tennis will be ability based,

    grouping together boys of similar levels. This will, hopefully, allow the

    coaches to provide more specific coaching tobenefit each boys development.

    For activities such as Basketball & Judo where we run a number of sessions,

    priority for the earlier sessions will be given to the younger age groups. As a

    result boys in Years 5-8 may often find themselves being allocated Session 3.

    If, for any reason, a session has to be cancelled parents will be

    notified, at the earliest convenience, by the Schools texting service.

    If your son is unable to attend an after-school activity the member of staffconcerned must be contacted, prior to the day. If it is a session run by an

    external member of staff please e-mail [email protected].

    The Pick Up point for each activity will be the Clubs venue, NOT the Chinese

    Gates.
