Deco Gel Concrete Stain

Technical DataDeco Gel Concrete Acid Stain is an acid-based gel ofminerals and acid designed to color and adhere with-out drips or runs to vertical surfaces and other projectssuch as garden décor. Deco Gel is formulated tomatch perfectly with all our liquid acid stains and isideal for borders, vertical surfaces, statuary, gardendécor, intricate designs/stencils and free-hand art.Deco Gel is designed to enhance new and existingconcrete surfaces by adding decorative and uniqueshades of color. The variegated and translucent coloreffects are a result of the unique formulation ofblended acid metallic salts in water–based gelled so-lutions that are slightly acidic. This provides a varia-tion of earth tone colors similar to the oxidation of acopper roof or the patina of a bronze sculpture.

The stains lightly etch and penetrate new or existingconcrete and chemically form permanent insolublecolored precipitates that remain within the pores of theconcrete.

Deco Gel stained walls, floors, and statuary are supe-rior in durability and abrasion resistance to that of con-crete surfaces coated with acrylic or paints which canwear and deteriorate. Because of the chemical reac-tion, Deco Gel Stains become part of the concrete sur-face, so it will not chip, crack, fade, peel. Deco Gel likeConcrete Acid Stain must be sealed to achieve a finalfinish and to protect the surface from the elements.Sealers should be chosen on the basis of several fac-tors: outdoor/indoor use, gloss level and ease of ap-plication.

Deco Gel Concrete Stains should not to be use tocover blemishes or errors in concrete. In certaincases, the stains may accent finishing marks or blem-ishes in concrete depending on the applicationmethod and the color of stain chosen.

Direct Colors Deco Gel Concrete Acid Stains requirevarious activation times to achieve optimal perform-ance. Because of this, Deco Gel's initial appearancewill be different from the end result. Use the chart onpage one to reference color, required activation time, and first appearance of color. Each individual concretesubstrate is unique and will create varying effectsthat may appear significantly different rfom the colorchart. Some of the many factors include, but are notlimited to: finishing technique, mix designs, curingpractices, age, condition, surface porosity and basecolor of concrete.

Deco Gel Concrete Acid Stains bring an element ofuncertainty and unpredictability in its final appear-ance, which can include uneven or molten effects.Thisis not considered to be a defect, but the reason thismethod of coloration is chosen.

It is always strongly recommended to sample thecolor on the same surface to be stained to make cer-tain the finished appearance is desirable.

Deco Gel Concrete Stains are composed of a unique

formulation of blended metallic salts, in an acidic, wa-ter – based and gelled solution. The metallic salts pen-etrate and react with the substrate to deposit the col-ors into the pores of the concrete. Each color iscomposed of a complex proprietary formulation contain-ing no pigments or resins. This formulation creates amore effective chemical reaction and deeper coloriza-tion.

Many different effects and appearances can beachieved using Deco Gel Concrete Acid Stain. Testsamples help determine both if the surface can besuccessfully acid stained and the best colors for yourproject. When preparing the surface to be stained, donot use an acid wash or muriatic acid to clean the sur-face, as this will prevent the stain from reacting with theconcrete. Experienced applicators may want to sandthe surface prior to staining using a palm sander with50 or 100 grit mesh or paper which to open the poresof the concrete so staining is easier and colorizationmore thorough. Surfaces must be completely dry andfree of dust before application. For machine troweledor excessively polished floors, apply DCI Hard Trow-eled Floor Prep to open the pores of the concrete be-fore staining. To avoid costly application errors, drop ateaspoon or less of stain onto the concrete before be-ginning a larger project. If the stain produces a fizzingreaction, your surface is ready for staining. If not, theconcrete may have been cleaned with muriatic acid, machine troweled, or waterproofed during the pouringprocess. For more information, contact Direct Colors orvisit our website, www.directcolors.com.

The application of the stain will vary according to size, design and desired effect. Use a foam brush or foamroller to apply the deco gel product. Artist brushes canalso be used for close work and free-hand art. Becauseour stain is drip and run-free, Deco Gel is perfect foruse with stencils on both vertical and horizontal appli-cations. For a more diverse effect, use a plastic drywalltrowel for application.

Deco Gel Concrete Acid Stains are typically applied inone even coat, working the color into the surface usingusing one or more of the previously mentioned applica-tors. When you first apply the stain, you should noticea “fizzing” reaction to the concrete. A second coat maybe applied if needed or desired. Do not rinse the sur-face during or between applications, but allow the colorto remain on the surface for the recommended amountof time. As the Gel dries on the surface, an alkali andmineral residue will form on the surface. Once thestain has fully processed, remove the white saltyresidue by neutralizing the surface using one to two ta-blespoon of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) per gal-lon of water. Apply directly to the surface to neutralizethe stain. The sodium bicarbonate to water ratio can beincreased if desired. The surface should be completelyneutralized before sealing. After cleaning, the wet con-crete offers a close visual approximation of the finalcolor after sealing.

We recommend using Sprayable Satin Finish Con-crete Sealer for statuary, garden decor, vertical appli-cations and hard-to-reach places, or Krystal Kote HighPerformance Cross-Linking Water Based ConcreteSealer, which can be applied with a foam brush/roller

or similar applicator. It is best to apply at least twocoats of sealer to the surface to protect the finishand keep your concrete looking new for years. Mostsealer must be reapplied every 1 to 3 years depend-ing on wear and weather.

Deco Gel Concrete Stains are available in quart (.98liters), one gallon (3.78 Liters) and five gallon (18.9Liters) containers. Sample kits are available in all col-ors for testing purposes or smaller projects.

Coverage will vary widely depending on the porosity, texture, application techniques, age of concrete, num-ber of applications and among other factors. A typicalgallon of Deco Gel Concrete Acid Stain will cover ap-proximately 150-200 square feet.

The typical shelf life of our Deco Gel Concrete AcidStains is one year from the date of purchase. Contain-ers should always be stored out of direct sunlight, tightly closed and upright. Always rotate your inven-tory when storing.
