The Connected Industrial Workforce

The Industrial Internet of Things will significantly transform the workforce with new digital technologies. Intelligent machines - information systems that sense, comprehend, act and learn - will complement, augment and enhance the tasks and activities of workforces in various areas. Robotics and computerization are ready and primed for coordinating processes, monitoring performance, and scheduling resources and activities. In this transformation, companies will encounter many risks and challenges along the way but can also achieve significant benefits, in particular from improved operational efficiency and productivity, enhanced safety

and higher asset utilization. Equally important, intelligent machines will free managerial resources to focus on more strategic issues and activities. With contributions from pioneers of this concept and supported by global research, Accenture will drive the discussion about how the future of work will be radically different from what it is today.

Ideation. Innovation. Incubation

Traditional business models won’t work in the digital era and many companies risk losing market share and revenues if they don’t adopt new approaches to innovation. The Industrial Internet of Things is a key building block. With connected products and services, companies can capture customer insights and design new products that are specifically tailored to their needs―a shift from a “product-centric” to a “client-centric” approach. Second, industrial companies need to adopt an “incubator” approach: opening up the innovation process to external partners―including start-ups, customers and suppliers―and building an internal incubator capability to

nurture business ideas from across the entire ecosystem. Drawing on leading examples, Accenture will share experience and insights into how companies can succeed in this critical transition.

The Journey to Smart Products

The Industrial Internet of Things is driving a shift from traditional manufacturing to high-value, software-based “smart” products that enable connected services. This journey to smart products has implications for the entire Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) process from product definition and product development to manufacturing, supply chain, sales and customer services. In particular, smart products have fundamentally new requirements regarding software development and processes which will significantly impact the PLM system landscape and its interface with the IIoT and other system platforms. Together with leading industry representatives,

Accenture will discuss the evolution of PLM and the critical role it plays in the journey to smart products and developing new digital business models.

The Platform Revolution

Extracting value from the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) requires platforms that can collect, analyze and act upon huge volumes of data from the connected products and devices that make up the IIoT. Achieving this on a global scale with ever-increasing volumes of data is a significant challenge requiring far more complex architecture than for traditional enterprise systems. And with a profusion of new platforms serving different functions and industry verticals companies today have to navigate through a highly fragmented landscape of IIoTsolutions and vendors. With contributions from many of
