The new course: What are the changes?

Interactive orals are out! Individual oral = only I/A I/A = 25% Oral used to assess interactive

skill New assessment criteriaPage 3

The Individual Oral – 10 mn., 25%

To take place during the second year of the programme, with some advance notice

Consist of three parts:

1. Presentation + Teacher’s questions based on visual stimulus (1-2 mn., with 15 mn. preparation)

2. Teacher’s questions based on visual stimulus (2-3 mn.)

3. General Conversation between teacher and student (4-5 mn., topics from core syllabus)

Must be a spontaneous conversation and not be rehearsed.

The Individual Oral – 10 mn., 25%

MUST be recorded as samples will be requested for moderation

Consist of three parts:

1.Presentation on stimulus

2.Follow-up questions3.General conversation (Including two

questions on the Written Assignment).

Must be a spontaneous conversation and not be rehearsed.

This should begin with at least 2 questions on the written assignment, e.g.:

What is your written assignment about? Why did you choose this as your written

assignment? What did you learn from the written

assignment?

Current Criteria for the I/A: 15+15=30%

The oral component is internally assessed according to the following 3 assessment criteria.

Criterion A: Language /10Pronunciation and intonation, vocabulary and grammar

Criterion B: Communication skills /10Relevant information, appropriate response and logic of arguments

Criterion C: Interaction /10Understanding, Interaction and register

Criterion B: Interactive and receptive skills /20Appropriate response, relevant information and sustained participation

Criterion A: Assess pronunciation and intonation, vocabulary and grammar to facilitate the understanding of the message

Criterion B: Assess appropriate response, relevant information + ability to maintain a conversation and to understand straightforward exchanges

Preparation for the Individual Oral

Description is a technique which can be taught Should be integrated into the course as soon as

possible Expose to a whole range of visual stimuli Familiarize with prepositions of location Try to make connections with the 3 themes Practice description in every possible context Encourage students to make personal connections

with the pictures
