Planning & PreparationBefore creating our movie teaser trailer, we had worked together and researched different trailers, magazine covers and movie posters to get a better idea of the codes & conventions. This research will help us when it comes to creating our movie trailer as we will be more aware of what to include and portray by following the features of real horror trailers. To help attract the audience we will produce a movie poster and magazine cover to promote our film. We intend to make our movie trailer look as professional as we can by using different editing and camera techniques. Our plan is to make an exciting yet short horror trailer; during our research we found that the longer the duration of the trailer was the less effective it was in terms of capturing an audiences attention. Half of the face is in darkness, the shadow effect suggests mysteriousness within the character. On the other hand the white contrast with the black, the white could represent the persons purity.

Purple is the colour of Spirituality. It urges us to find our power within, not the kind of power that needs to control or dominate others, but power rooted in connection to Spirit.

The redness of the eye could represent that this “person” is somehow infected or a “creation”.

The moth is symbolic of transformation, as the character in the movie is male and he wants to become female. The moth is placed on the character mouth because in the movie moths are placed in victims mouths. However if you have not seen the movie people may mistake the moth with a butterfly, which could possibly represent the way the character manoeuvres.

If you look closely to the moth the head is made up of 7 women body parts. These women represent the 7 victims in the movie

Horror Movie Trailers Research

This is another clip from Sinister, the editor has used a close up shot of the ‘theoretical ghost’. Also in the scene the film editor has added a high contrast effect for a split second in the scene making it more striking when watching the trailer for the audience. The quick change in colour is discrete but makes a big difference to the shock factor, which is needed to build up the suspense for the audience but also to go along with the trailer.

The medium close of the axe indicates to the audience a sense of danger. In this clip the villain is dragging the axe across the ground; by showing weapon makes the audience feel uncomfortable when watching. The axe also represents the violence in the film.

Its also towards the end, it makes the pace of the trailer faster, making it more intense.

In this scene from Sinister the director has used flickering lights to keep the audience at the edge of their seat, awaiting for something to happen next. leaving them thinking:‘what’s going to happen next?’‘Does the family survive?’All the questions that may enter the audience’s mind is what the director wants the them to think. This is a good technique to use to draw in people to watch the film.

Character profiles Amrik Bahia:

A psychopathic serial killer – Not given a name, this makes the audience feel detached to the character, builds up more suspense and keeps them on the edge of their seat. -who is he?-why is he doing this? Etc.

Jamie Darbon:Comes across as the humble and noble boyfriend to the character Ellie Fudge/audience. However he suffers from a condition called schizophrenia, which is a mental health problem affects his thinking, feeling and behaviour.

Ellie Fudge:Character plays the main victim in the trailer girlfriend of the schizophrenic character. Unaware of his condition she willingly attended to her boyfriends every need.

Khadija Larkins:Role of the beaten/bruised/abused character. Has been tortured and withheld against her own will by the psychopath. Eventually she escapes to warn the couple of what’s ahead however meets her own death.
