Camera shots• Birds Eye view-The video starts off with a birds eye view shot of a man balancing

a glass on his head which is half full or half empty depending on what the audience see it as. This indicates the video can be viewed in two ways and the song has two different sides to it. The man in the shot is looking upwards, so can show some signs of vulnerability.

• Long Shot-Here is a shot of the three characters in the music video, they are all standing on a wall in a very tall, relaxed manor showing confidence and happiness. They are all spaced out from each other which could show they are happy independent people.

Page 3: Planning A2 media coursework

• Close up- In this shot you see two people kissing very passionately, and even though there are people around them they don't seem bothered and only interested in each other. The shot is very close up and portraying how intimate the moment is. And also indicates love.

• Mid-Shot-This shot is showing happiness, and the fact there is a long road ahead of them, could mean they have all the time in the world and have nothing to worry about, there body language shows they have no fears.

Page 4: Planning A2 media coursework

Close up-This shot of a man smiling is one of the first shots of the video, seeing as its so close up and he is smiling portrays he is confidant ,and the video is set to start off on a positive note and could hint at what the rest of the video will be like. He seems very calm however the fact he's wearing glasses could show he's holding back on showing what he really is.

• Mid-Shot-In the shot all three characters look very happy and very much their own person. It is at a very comfortable angle of them all and shows them to be very relaxed. One of the boys is holding alcohol which shows youth.

Page 5: Planning A2 media coursework

Lighting• In this Image the lighting of the sunset shows youth and the romantic turbulence of the character

shown in the video. As the sun is just coming up its also portraying a “new day” and this links in with youth.

• This light is a faded blue light, and quite dark this portraying they are having a goodtime and are almost as if there “lost in the music". The Target audience can relate to this as they would of been to parties before and can understand this clip of the video and the mood.

Page 6: Planning A2 media coursework

• In this image the lighting is dim with slight light, It shows relaxation and calmness. It can also portray some sadness, and a sort of reflection mood and generally dim atmosphere.

• In this image the lighting goes well with the image as their both very bright and give off the impression of “newness” and freshness". You can tell the sun is shining through the building and as if its something new and happiness.

Page 7: Planning A2 media coursework

Mise en scène• In this image you can see one character swinging on a swing staring up to the sky, this can

show freedom and independence, or the complete opposite of wanting to be free and something holding her back, in this instance the swing. She has quite a lot of tattoos, this portrays she is her own person and is another way of expressing certain special things in her life. The location of the shot is in a forest, and all you can see is trees, this is like escapisim, and the character finding her own freedom and happiness. She isn't wearing many clothes, apart from a skirt and a small top, showing flesh. This links in with the whole “her being her own person” and certain aspects of youth, as to some people this may be disrespectful however she doesn't care. The whole aspect of this part of the video, is to show liberty, happiness and the love of something.

Page 8: Planning A2 media coursework

In this clip of the video both characters are obvically both portraying love for each other. The fact they are both not bothered about the people all around them shows how indulged theyAre in eachother. You cant really tell if the setting of the scene is in a kitchen or a bathroom, thisIs saying the location isn’t the main priority in the scene and the two characters are what theThe audience should be focussing on. The costumes worn by the characters are see as “edgy” and The leather as youthful. The girl isn't wearing a lot and has all her tattoos on show so this shows Her being carefree.

Page 9: Planning A2 media coursework

• This is one of the main shots in the video as it portrays what the whole music video is about. All three characters are giving off the vibe of happiness, strenth, carefree and youth. There body language is showing all of the above and the fact one of there hands is high in the air shows victory. They are showing hierarchy by standing on a tall brick wall and inderpendance. There costumes are all individual and show edge and how they are their own person. The characters silhouettes show them having fun and being reckless by walking on the wall.

Camera shots close up shot-In this camera shot you can see the expression of the boys disappointment and sadness. This Could be a portrayal of the rest of the music video, or to emphasise how bad things are and how they can get Better!

Mid Shot- In this shot you can see people in the backround, however there reactions aren't standing out as theTwo boys and the main chasing them, this shows there the main priority in the video. The two boys haveObviously upset the stranger and there expressions show this.

Page 12: Planning A2 media coursework

• Close up- In this shot, you can tell something is wrong as both boys have there back to the camera, however the younger boy is looking back with a scared expression on his face. This portrays he may, not actually want to be there and the close up shot emphasises this, and is showing its important in the video.

• Mid shot-In this shot you can see the older sibling telling the younger one to stay there while he goes off and does something. The younger brother looks worried and everyone else you can see is doing there own thing and not doing anything very recognisable, this is highlighting the fact the brother is so worried and you see this.

Page 13: Planning A2 media coursework

Lighting• In this image you can see the shanty town, and the darkness of all the houses and this

could reflect the type of life the people live and the darkness of their day to day lives and what they go through. However on the horizon you can see the sky line of the city in the light portraying hope and that that future could be positive.

• In this image the main source of light is on the boy dancing in the centre of all the people around him, this shows that he is the main focus in the shot and that fact the light is dimmed around all the cheering people gives him a sense of power and as he is raised compared to everyone else he has hierarchy.

Page 14: Planning A2 media coursework

• In this shot you can just see the two boys in bright light, this is pointing out they are the two main characters in the music video and their importance in it as well. from this image you don't get an idea of what the music video is about however this image could be telling the audience whatever the boys do in the video there still good and its ends well.

• In comparison to the above image, the lighting in this image is contrasting which shows them in a darker sense, therefore highlighting the bad and good elements of the video. It is arguable that this links to Levis Strauss’s theory of binary oppositions, in which the negative characters or ‘villains’ are darker lit, whereas the victims or heroes are positively lit. In this case, the two boys are going to get drugs, which shows the influence that

the character on the left has on the younger boy, who is positively lit in the above image.

Page 15: Planning A2 media coursework

mise en scene • In this image you can see the young boy socialising and making a deal with someone that

seems to be quite a bit older than him. The boys back is at a slant to the camera which could portray, him turning this back on the right thing to do or ignoring people telling him its wrong what he's doing. The are other people involved in the shot don't seem to interested in the young boy but more on what him and their friend are shaking hands on. However their body language is a bit shifty and distanced and you can tell there not good friends. The way they are dressed portrays they may not be bothered on the way they look or as its so relaxed they may not have much money for materialistic things, and this could tie in with what there dealing about and could show money would be involved. Both older boys have tattoos, this shows they could be rough and have youth. The older boys expression to the younger boy seems stern however he's agreeing to something so some form of acceptance as well.

Page 16: Planning A2 media coursework

this shot both boys have very different facial expressions, the boy on the left seems very relaxedand “cool” and not too bothered there is a man chasing after him with a knife. However the boyOn the right seems a lot more scared and bothered, it even looks like he's screaming, he alsoLooks a bit younger so he may not be used to things like this, but this could be very different for The older boy. The other people in the shot don't seem to be too phased by what's going on, this Could show its a normal occurrence and things such a theft and crime are very normal around There. The man holding the knife seems very angry and the fact he has a weapon shows the boys Have done something to upset him alot, and he wont stop till he has caught them, however theyDon't have anything in there hands, so it may not have been something they have stolen.

Page 17: Planning A2 media coursework

• In this shot the older boy has a stern facial expression and is making sure the younger boy stays where he is while he goes off to do something. The younger boy looks scared but does what he's told, the fact he cant go with him shows, its something bad. The older boy is closer to the camera and seems to have more hierarchy than the younger one. The way they are both dressed is similar however the older boy has his t-shirt off, show he's more chilled and older. The rest of the people in the video don't seem to phased by what's going on, and this portrays, its just important between the two boys. You can see two older teenagers waiting for the younger boy with his shift off, they have an influence on him and are going to do some kind of deal with him, hats why he doesn't want the younger boy to come with him, and its not something good or what he would want him to see.

Camera shots• Mid Shot-This is one of the first shots of the video, the shot is concentrated on the main

character in the music video, however you can see silhouettes of the other characters legs. It is portraying he is the main focus in the video and seeing as its at the beginning of the video, he is who you will see most of.

Long Shot-In this shot you can see not only the main character but also the rest of the band, thisAlso has certain aspects of a birds eye shot too. Its portraying that the ones at the front are the More important character, the fact one of them is the main singer explains this.

Page 20: Planning A2 media coursework

• Close-up- This is a shot of all the backing singers in the music video, they are dressed the same to portray they are all viewed on the same level and aren't as important as the front singers. The shot is also showing them happy and having a good time.

• Mid shot-This is another example of a mid shot, the main character is in the front viewing however, you can see certain parts of the other characters in the music video. There is a slight image of a drummer in the backround, however this can hardly be seen and shows he isn't as important in the shot and maybe the whole music video.

Page 21: Planning A2 media coursework

Mise en scene • In this image all the character are dressed the same, this is portray they are all seen on the

same level and are at the same importance. They are all dressed quite smartly, and wearing horse riding hats, this is all very sophistacated, and maybe not something they would normally wear, so quite post modern.

• In this image you can see all the characters, they are all dressed in green portraying they all are the same on some level, apart from their differences in some of their other clothing. There expressions are all the same, having fun and happiness. There is also youth in this shot how they are situated on stage and there body language is quite bold.

• Analysis of Album Advertisements in Magazines• This magazine advertisement for Basement Jaxxs 2001 album Rooty seeks to

accurately represent the style and attitude of the music Basement Jaxx produce. Basement Jaxx are an electronic dance duo, whose music is instantly recognizable and has a unique, signature sound. This uniqueness is reflected in the advertising for the album. The main feature is an image of a white gorilla, something instantly out of the ordinary and different, portraying that Basement Jaxxs music is essentially the µwhite gorilla of the music industry. The background is a starry sky, promoting a space-age feel and suggests that the albums µout of this world and pushes boundaries. The use of colour further assists the unique, attention seeking tone of the album, with a use of bright pink paint splatters and green and yellow striped title.

Page 25: Planning A2 media coursework

• You Me at Six’s album Hold Me Down is advertised in a way which will appeal to the bands wide, varied audience. This is done through the use of a wide range of color to support mass appeal, with appear-bag like background which could be considered gender and age neutral. This faded, vintage-like appearance somewhat supports the music of the band, as the rock acoustic genre is timeless. The use of images, however, seems to lean towards female appeal, with pink roses clearly visible, a very feminine aspect. This appeal would be important for an all-male band to take into account. As for release information, the onlooker is not overly informed about where the album can be obtained, with only the bold OUT NOW as an indicator, urging them to go out and find out about the album themselves, perhaps reflecting a relaxed and non-pushy vibe of the band.

Page 30: Planning A2 media coursework

BriefMusic video: I will be doing a music video for my A level Media coursework, the genre I will be concentrating on is indie pop, and the music video

I will be doing is summertime sadness, by Lana Del Ray. My target audience will be teenagers to young adults. (16-24)Content: I will start my video off as a long shot, zooming into a close up of an individual character. I am aiming to have one main character

throughout the video with a few extras; however the main focus will be on this main character. I want to portray and outline the strength of one character, however also how easy it is to become vulnerable from a situation, and what it can do to you. I decided on this as i feel connected to the song and i feel i could make a good video out of it due to my own experiences.

Package release for album: My album cover will be a pattern on the back then a photo of the individual artist I will be using. The packaging will be a pattern then a very fait photo of the artist in the background. There will not be a lot of detail however as I want it to be simple and the main concentration to be the artist and her individuality.

Magazine Advertisement: This will include the release date and a review of the album; it will also be similar to the album cover but obviously just in a bigger scale. I feel it’s important to advertise the album in a magazine in bold and to attract the target market, so it would be in a magazine, in which my target market would read. So this will not be as simple and the package release twill have more detail of the album and more patterns apart from the artist herself.

• Organisation of props/actors/settings.• I will use one main character for my music video and maybe have one or two more, however I want to focus on one main person as I think

it will be able to tell the story of the music video better. My aim is to portray the main character as a strong individual however as the situation goes in the music video, shows their vulnerability and how even the strongest people can crack. The setting of the music video will either be on the beach then in an open space, or at a big house and in some kind of garden, so whatever I decide there will be a lot of space to work with and I will make sure I do something different and interesting with it, to portray the story of the music video. I decided not to have many people in my video as I wanted to tell a story and I feel you can understand a story better if one person is telling it and then maybe an extra person to add to that story. Even though I have been suggesting I would like the video to be telling the story I also want a bit of mystery to the video to keep the target audience intrigued. As the setting is going to be quite simple I have decided to have a few props to make it more interesting and eye

Catching. I want the actors to stand out from the setting so there the main focus, not so much the setting. Camera techniques I want to use many different camera techniques for my music video to make it as interesting as possible. These will hopefully include black and

white stock film; this is so i can emphasis there sad scenes in video and made it more effective. I will also use, home videos, of the actors to show their history and I feel it would make the video as a whole a lot more interesting instead of having it all in the present, and it all goes back to how I want it to be represented as a story so think will make that more successful. I will also use such techniques such as cross-cutting and focus shots. I haven’t used these much before and think it will be good to use different kind of shots and also to challenge my ability. However there will still obviously be the normal camera shots such as zooming, close up, mid shot etc.
