National Awards for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities

(Divyangjan) , 2016, at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi

These awards have been instituted with the objective to focus public attention on issues concerning persons with disabilities and to promote their mainstreaming in society. The scope of the scheme has been amended from time to time, keeping in view, the changing scenario.

The National Awards are conferred on 3rd December every year on the “International Day of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) and organizations, who are working for the empowerment of persons with disabilities”.

Presently, National Award are given under categories which are as under: ROLE MODEL , Hearing Impairment (Male) and presentation of awards by Shri. Pranab Mukherjee, Hon’ble President of India .

CITATIONS

Shri. K. Murali , is a hearing impaired person associated with Deaf Leader Association . He is engaged in providing rehabilitation services to the Persons with Disabilities ( Divyangjan) for more than 36 years, integrating and main streaming the hearing impaired persons. He conducts training programme for corporate houses and is involved in promotion of Indian Sign Language and serves as a resource person for India and Sri Lanka. Shri. Murali runs many CBR projects in Coimbatore & Mumbai’s villages. He has also published a number of research papers at global level, and has organized many job melas leading to placement of many Persons with Disabilities ( Divyanguan) . He has received Best Social Worker Award from Government of Tamil Nadu in 2013 for his outstanding performance .

His extensive efforts and achievements in the rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) despite his own physical limitations makes him the “Role Model” for others and worthy of the National Award.

programmes, they also promised they will arrange few vacancies in their institutions for the right

people . All the VIPs praises the DLF selfless deduction work for the past 15 years….

SIPDA scheme for free computer training for adults with hearing empowerment conducted by Deaf

Leaders Foundation, Coimbatore with a grand inaugural function was held on 13th April 2016.

Valedictory function held on 19th September 2016 ( Monday ) at 11 AM at our DLF premises, at

Coimbatore . Dr. K. Vijay Karthikeyan, IAS Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner preside over the

function as Chief Guest and huge number of training students with their families, public and VVIP’s

attended the function.

Mr. K. Murali, Director, DLF welcoming the gathering and highlights the importance of the skill

training and its benefits gained by the Trainees . Dr. P. Krishna Kumar , CEO & Secretary , Nehru

Institute of Groups, Coimbatore addressing the gathering and given a guidelines of wonderful

Abled Welfare Officer, Coimbatore blessing the trainers and DEAF LEADERS Foundation efforts

both gave the certificate’s to trained persons , finally tea and snacks were given to all and all are

express their happiness and thanks the DEAF LEADERS Foundation and NIEPMD to extend the

training programme to as much as Deaf People in future.

Special Training (Literacy English Class) – Deaf students are given fundamental English from ABCD alphabets and they are now able to read and write in English. There involvements is very impressive and given good result.

Higher Education & Resource Library - All the deaf are studied in a normal school / College they are not able to understand the lecture given by the teacher / professiors in voice, so the entire syllabus are teached them by sign language. In our hard work and training the entire batch of deaf are scored good marks in their subjects. More and more deaf students are enrolling their names for the coming study holiday period.

CSR – COGNIZANT Foundation has donated Rs. 6,8 lakh towards the Laptop 1 , computer 10 nos , LED Projector , Sony Video Camera , Printer , Computer Table & Computer Chair & etc and inaugurated by Tmt. World Deaf Day is celebrated every year in last week (Sunday) of the September to draw the attention of general public and development authorities towards the achievements of the deaf person as well as deaf people community. Throughout the celebration of the event, all the deaf people organization worldwide are encouraged greatly to fulfill the demands and needs of the deaf people as well as encourage their rights all over the world. World Deaf Day 2016 was celebrated on Wednesday 28th September 2016, In association with PSG College of Arts & Science and supported by Hotel Annaprooona & Gowarisankar, Coimbatore.

People should participate in celebrating the World Deaf Day not only as Deaf Day but to expand the way of growth and development through the new technologies as well as to offer deaf people wide variety of opportunities to change their lifestyle. It is celebrated with the rallies, seminar and various deaf awareness campaigns including some fun events.

On this World Deaf Day, We are looking forwarded to your gracious support to spend few minutes to learn sign language as a new skill to make a difference. This initiative “We tell you to learn Sign Language” strives to inculcate new skill learning to empower normal people to have open mind convention with deaf people.

and gloriously celebrate the events.

People of all age groups either participated or gathered there to

cheer the participants at the third Covai Open Mini Marathon

Jointly Organizing by Sakthi Group of Companies, Deaf Leaders

Foundation, Rotaract Club of Coimbatore Comito and CBM Trust.

The event was held at CODISSIA road, off Avanashi Road, marking

the World Disability Day celebration.

The run was category into five and nearly 1000 people participated

in the run and nearly 100 of them were differently abled, A Zumba

dance was also organized to cheer the participants.

Cash Prize

First three in each category were awarded with the cash prize and

other participants were given participants certificate. The

youngest participant was four-year-old A.G. Lochan from

Sowdeshwari Vidyalaya.

“This marathon gives us self-confidence and we are not different

from others, thanks to the organisers,” said differently abled

The organizers left no stone unturned in extending assistance and

medical aid to the participants. “Even after the postponement of

the event twice due to various extraneous circumstances, it was

gladdening to see so many participants,’ said one of the organizer.

The India International Deaf Film Festival(IIDFF), the only popular film festival

for the deaf in the country announced the 4th IIDFF’s theme “Human Relations

among deaf, hard for hearing and hearing” on 4th August 2016 at the Press Club

of Bangalore. At the press meet Mr.K.Murali, Director and Founder of Deaf

Leaders Foundation and President of IIDFF, M.S.Rana, Organising Secretary

of IIDFF, Dr.T.R.Ramakrishnan, Coordinator of IIDFF had addressed the

members of the press present at the press club with the consent of Dr Chenraj

Roychand, Presidnet of Jain University Trust and Chairman of IIDFF 2016.

Queries were answered to the reporters who gathered in satisfactory numbers.

It was announced that the 4th IIDFF 2016 will be jointly organized with Jain

University, Bengaluru on 28th to 30th December 2016 at the Jain University,

Knowledge Campus, 44/4, District Fund Road, 9th Block, Jayanagar, Bengaluru.

The broad objectives of the festival were a) to explore the key issues of the

isolated deaf from enjoying the main stream cinemas, b) make an attempt to

project the daily social life styles along with the deaf, hard for hearing and the

hearing by creative cinema, c) boost the urge for communicating with standard

sign language in the social system in India amongst the youth. By achieving

these objectives, there could be a boost in the endeavor to balance and to better

connect the deaf and the society.

The specific objectives of conducting this festival at JGI (Jain

University) Bengaluru were to a) Create awareness amongst the youth about

the creative ability of making cinema by the deaf and mute people, b) To

network with different educational institutions across the country and conduct

IIDFF in future, c) Create a knowledgebase for the film and information

industry, d) Promote the learning of sign language by the youth for better

interaction with the hearing impaired.

Initially the only vehicle for effective communication were

the website www.iidff.org, the email IDs: [email protected],

[email protected], [email protected] and

[email protected] and the mobile phone numbers of K

Murali and Dr T R Ramakrishnan. As the coordination progressed,

there were posters, outdoor hordings, press release, presentations,

social media networking for promotion of the film festival beyond

word of mouth with exchange of a colourful IIDFF card.

The 4th IIDFF called for registration and submissions of films

in the category of film length in 1-minute, 5, 15 and 30-minutes

duration. The films could be creative and follow genres like

documentary, experimental, international, drama, action, horror,

comedy, romance, sci-fi, college / school student film etc. The films

were open both to the deaf and the hearing. The criteria for deaf

cinema were that the films had to be scripted, created, performed,

produced and directed by the deaf and hard for hearing with help

from sponsors and hearing. The criteria for cinemas submitted by

the hearing were that it should be silent films and could include

background score.

The films for competition were categorized based on the film

run length. In 2016 the IIDFF had received 32 film entries from India

and 38 film entries from foreign nations across the globe. To name

USA, UK, Germany, South America, Malaysia, Iran, Austria, France,

Afghanistan, Spain, Republic of Bolivarian, Ukraine, China, Portugal

and Australia.

The morning session of 28th December 2016 had a free

workshop on film making by Mok Chiu Yu, President , Hong Kong Film

& Theatre Society, Hong Kong on the topic “ Enhance your creative

vision”. Further Prof. B. Satish from the Department of Animation, Jain

University had spoken about making animation films and how the deaf could be

interested. The workshop was attended by about 200 delegates.

The Film Festival was inaugurated on 28th December 2016 at the 2nd Floor

Conference room at the Jain University, Knowledge campus,9th Block, Jayanagar by

Mr.C.Senthil Rajan, Director, Directorate of Film Festivals, Ministry of Information

and Broadcasting, New Delhi. The dignitaries at the dais along with the C.Senthil

Rajan were Dr.N.Sudararajan , Vice Chancellor, Jain University, Mr.Parvindar Singh,

Manager, Corporate Communications and Partnerships, CBM India Trust, Shri. M. I.

Ganagi, Chief General Manager, NABARD, Karnataka RO., Smt. Sakeela

Leuenberger, CEO, Charity World, Switzerland, Shri. Mok Chiu Yu, President , Hong

Kong Film & Theatre Society, Hong Kong, Shri. K.Murali, President IIDFF and

Director of Deaf Leaders Foundation, Shri. D.S. Rana, Technical Officer, Indian

Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi and Organizing Secretary IIDFF and Dr.T

R Ramakrishnan Coordinator IIDFF & Faculty, Jain University. The Vice Chancellor

had mentioned about the support of his colleagues Dr B T Venketesh and Dr B A

Vasu of Jain University who were present at the inaugural.

The inaugural was followed by a panel discussion on the topic,

“Today’s cinema and the cinema in the silent era and the space for the deaf in today’s

Cinema.” The panel discussion was chaired by Mr.Kiriti Rambhatla, Media

Operations Lead, LinkedIn, Bengaluru and Film Actor. The speakers present were:

- Mr.C.Senthil Rajan, Director, Directorate of Film Festivals, Ministry of

Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.

- Shri. Amreesh Gopalakrishnan, Sign Language Researcher, Sign Language

Interpreter, Sign Language Lexicographer and Film Maker, Mysore

- Shri. Parvinder Singh, Manager, Corporate Communications and

Partnerships, CBM India Trust, Bengaluru

Post the panel discussion an official jury made up of deaf & hearing artists,

critics, filmmakers and educators seated along with about 200 public observers,

majority of whom were deaf viewed the films. The jury consisted of Shri.Sreejith

Sreekandan (CBM, Bengaluru), Smt.Ashwini Melwaney, Hair Stylist & Makeup

(Deaf) (National Award for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Hearing

Impairment, Role Model) , 2016 Winner under disabilities, Shri.Amreesh

Gopalkrishnan and Shri.Sunil Sahasrabudhe , Sign Language Researchers and Interpreters. The jury viewed

5 one minute, 6 five minutes, 6 fifteen minutes and 7 thirty minutes Indian deaf sign language films and 10

international deaf sign language films and at the venue. Further they had seen 6 Indian silent films made by

the hearing. Prof.B.Satish of Jain Animation School along with Dr T R Ramakrishnan and the audience viewed

20 International silent films made by the hearing. The results were fare with intense discussions amongst the

jury members. The films were screened between 28th to 30th December 2016.

The final day was witnessed by an exciting red carpet programme where the deaf film makers had enjoyed

taking pictures with invited guests as hri.A R PRakash and Ms Maya Chandra, film artists, Directors, Jury and

organizers. The autograph poster was filled with signatures by enthusiast film participants and film makers. The

valedictory programme was proceeded by Shri.K.Murali and Shri.Amreesh Gopalakrishnan. The blind students

from Smarthanam presented an enchanting performace of light. The guests for the programme present were

Shri. A. R. Prakash, Deputy Director, Department of Information and Public Relations, Government of

Karnataka, Smt.Maya Chandra, Founder and Director of Maya Films and Shri.Darwin Moses, Programme

Officer, CBM Bengaluru. The prizes for the film winners were distributed by the invited guests, the president of

IIDFF, the members of the jury, sign language interpreters, organizing secretary, and coordinator of IIDFF.

Post event, the newspapers (Times of India, Deccan Herald, Indian Express, The Hindu, Prajavani, Samyuktha

Karnataka etc.), the radio (All India Radio) and Television (Doordarshan Chandanna) had covered the event

effectively. The postings on the online social media was also very popular. To conclude, IIDFF 2016 was

successful and the media has highly appreciated the event. Jain University seemingly had received very high

publicity through its support to the 4th IIDFF 2016 for good reasons by providing the venue, infrastructure, food

and accommodation by Dr Chenraj Roychand, President, Jain University Trust.

Short Course Training for 40 hours in 2 months at PSG , Coimbatore and First Batch Mr. Dadgu Laxmain ,

Sign Language Teacher teaching students of 40 on October 2016 and second Batch in March 2017 of 49

students and given certificate issued by Principal of PSG College of Arts & Science .

proud. The function title “ICONS of Coimbatore” of the year 2017 was City and Times of India on 9th March

2017 , The programme was compered by Mr. David of Radio city, he is popularly called as Dongry David.

The programme started by singing Tamilthaivalthu followed by lighting the lamp by dignitaries.

Dr. Pinky Andand, Additional Solicitor General of India, New Delhi was the chief guest and Mr.

Krishnachander , Chief of Arts of Living, Tamilnadu and Sr. vice President of India Cements Ltd, was the

guest of honour. They gave the awards for the Icons of Coimbatore for their contributions to the growth of

Coimbatore city in the recent past.

All India Sports Council of the Deaf & Tamil Nadu Sports Council of the Deaf was conducted two days on South Zonal Cricket Championship of the Deaf to been held at PSG Hospital Cricket Ground , Coimbatore and Jointly hosts by DEAF LEADERS FOUNDATION, FAMIL CARE, SOUTH INDIA WELFARE TRUST & COIMBATORE DISTRICT ASSOCIATION OF THE DEAF . Tamil Nadu got winner up. Our DLF arranged to collected sponsor amount of total Rs. 60,000 approximate including CBM T. Shirts and CAP also Cricket ball, Shield Cup and accommodation.

The 21st National Games of the deaf is scheduled to held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium,

chennai on March 28 to 31, 2017 with the Tamil nadu sports council of the deaf, Chennai

as the Hosts This National Games is open to select India PRObabe in the coming XXII

Summer Deaflympics, samsun, Turkey on July 2017, organized by All India Sports Council

Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC), New Delhi under

Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disability, Ministry of Social Justice and

through Indian Sign Language” on 20th -21st March, 2017. Shri. K. Murali has presented this

NASSCOM Foundation CSR Leadership Conference, Bangalore, 24 Nov, 2016 : The industry and

social sector. Spread over eight hours, the conference was packed with back to back sessions

delving into myriad themes under CSR, global and India development goals and social impact. We

received an astounding attendance of over 350 participants, with over 70 NASSCOM member

companies and over 150 NGOs actively participating in the event.
