Octabus (Dial-a-ride)

Octabus is a local minibus service forpeople who are unable to use ordinarybuses. You may go anywhere in theareas: Blackbird Leys, Cowley, Iffley,Jordan Hill, Marston, City Centre,Sandhills or Wolvercote. Ring-a-Ridecan take you, for example, to work,further education, shopping or visiting friends. You may also take a carer/escort.

The service is not available forHospital appointments or day care as these are carried out by theAmbulance Service and Social Services.Octabus operates Monday-Friday from 9.00am - 5.00 pm. To book,telephone 01865 876176

A one-off membership of £5 applies.Carers/escorts travel free. £2 single or £4 return within the City. Any otherjourney £3 and £6. Concessionary bus passes enable free travel, andtokens are accepted, (this may changefrom April 2011).

On-Street Pay & Display Parking Bays

Blue Badge holders are able to parkfor unlimited periods in on-street Payand Display (without charge) andresidents’ parking spaces. Parking isusually permitted for up to 3 hours onsingle or double yellow lines, but some restrictions do apply (i.e. loadingareas, etc.) Please refer to guidanceissued with the Badge for details of restrictions.

The largest concentration of the Payand Display spaces can be found inBroad Street and St Giles.

Blue Badge Parking

The map on page 8 shows thelocations of parking for around 90 BlueBadge vehicles. Blue Badge holderswill continue to be able to park forunlimited periods in on-street Pay andDisplay and residents’ parking spacesand for up to 3 hours on yellow lines.Refer to the Blue Badge Scheme

Oxford on the Level

A self-guided tour

The tour starts at Carfax, the ancientheart of the City, where the four roadsfrom the north, south, east and westgates meet. The name is derived fromthe Latin quadrifugus (four-forked).Dominating the scene is Carfax Tower,all that remains of the now demolishedSt Martin’s Church. You will notice the impressive clock and quarterboys(the 16th century originals are in theMuseum of Oxford, adjacent to theTown Hall on St Aldate’s).

Cross the road at the lights to thewoollen shop at the top of St Aldate’sand proceed down St Aldate’s, pastthe Town Hall, its door surmounted by the City’s coat of arms. Cross Blue Boar Street and continue down to the main entrance of Christ Church.People in wheelchairs are permitted to enter the college here, passing

under Tom Tower, designed by SirChristopher Wren in 1681. This housesa 7 ton bell called Great Tom whichstrikes 101 times, once for each of the original members of the college, at 9.05 pm. This is nine o’clock Oxfordtime, the City being five minutes westof Greenwich!

Take a turn around Tom Quad, thelargest quadrangle in Oxford, at thecentre of which is a pond, originallycreated partly as a reservoir for thecollege. The present statue of Mercuryreplaces an earlier one, damaged in 1817.

Christ Church is Oxford’s grandest and largest historic college. Originallyfounded by Cardinal Wolsey in 1525, it was taken over by King Henry VIIIwho in 1546 created Christ Church,uniquely combining a college with the Cathedral of Oxford. Within the

Cathedral (only accessible toaccompanied wheelchair users) is thereconstructed Shrine of St Frideswide,the patron saint of Oxford. During the Civil War (1640s), Oxford was theKing’s headquarters and Charles I and his court lived in Christ Church,while his wife, Henrietta Maria, withher court or household lived in thenearby Merton College.

Leave the College by the way youcame in and turn right, and right again into Blue Boar Street, past the Museum of Oxford and some(inaccessible) loos as far as OrielSquare. The car barrier can be passedon the right hand side. Bear right andcontinue through Oriel Square untilyou meet Merton Street. Take thepavement in Merton Street (if bikesallow passage).

As you pass Corpus Christi College onyour right look through the doorway tothe 16th century sun-dial surmountedby a pelican, which features both thearms of the college and those of its

founder, Richard Foxe, Bishop ofWinchester. Continue along MertonStreet on the pavement, as there is an area of cobbles coming up.

If you want to take a look go into the covered entrance area to MertonCollege on your right. You arepermitted to go as far as the ramp and look across to the hall andquadrangle of one of Oxford’s oldestcolleges, founded around 1274 byWalter de Merton. His statue (a copy),holding his Bishop’s crozier and thegreat seal of his Chancellor’s office,together with that of a king (Henry III),surmounts the gateway. Cross theroad to see the stone panel whichshows the founder kneeling in thewilderness before the book of sevenseals from the Revelation of SaintJohn. Undergraduates of this collegeof particular academic standing aretermed “postmasters”, a unique use of the word.

As you go out of the college, cross thecobbles to the other pavement (you

will see a section of lower pavement toyour right as you cross). Go left as faras Magpie Lane. Turn right up MagpieLane as far as the High Street. Beforecrossing the High Street at the lights,look across the road on the right toThe Queen’s College, (some way down the road) named after Queen Philippa,wife of Edward III. The cupola over the entrance gate, designed byHawksmoor, covers a statue of QueenCaroline, wife of George II, who gavemoney for rebuilding the college.

Cross the High Street to enter theUniversity Church of Saint Mary theVirgin via the Baroque south porch.Look up at the statue of the Virgin andChild whose heads were shot off by a parliamentary soldier in 1642 andrestored 20 years later. If you are unableto open the door, please bang loudlyand someone should come and help you!

From medieval times the Church wasclosely associated with the origins of the university and was used for

meetings, examinations andceremonies. It was also a place ofsafekeeping for the university’s fundswhich were stored in iron chests. Hencethe term “University Chest” meaning theuniversity members and administratorsdealing with university finances.

The trials of the three Bishops, Cranmer,Latimer and Ridley (1554,1555 and1556) were conducted in this Church.They were burned at the stake in BroadStreet for their beliefs. A pillar oppositethe pulpit was damaged by the erectionof a platform for the final trial andsentencing of Cranmer; a small arrow marks the spot.

During the Civil War many people were buried beneath the church floorwhen the City, loyal to the King wasbesieged in 1644 and 1646. JohnWesley, founder of the MethodistChurch preached the UniversitySermon on seven occasions here.John Henry Newman, leader of the Oxford Movement was vicar of St Mary’s from 1828-43.

Leave the church by the same wayand go to your right a few yards up the High Street (under the overhangingtree) into Radcliffe Square. From hereyou have a fine view of the magnificenttwin towers of All Souls College, builtto a design by Nicholas Hawksmoor in 1716 and 1720, together with thesplendid sundial designed by SirChristopher Wren. Founded as agraduate college for a warden andforty fellows in 1437, its memberswere required not only to pursuehigher studies but also to pray for the souls of the departed, particularlyKing Henry V, King of England andFrance and soldiers of the House ofLancaster who fell in the French wars.During the Civil War All Souls Collegedonated over 250 lb of plate to theRoyalist cause.

Facing you is perhaps Oxford’s mostphotographed building, the RadcliffeCamera. Believed to be the first roundlibrary in Britain, it was completed in1748 and became a science library.Now part of the Bodleian Library, it is

connected by underground passage to the New Bodleian and the mainBodleian libraries. This enables booksfrom the 80-odd miles of shelving,much of it also underground - to beconveyed safely to readers at theirdesks above.

Turn left into Brasenose College which takes its name from the bronzesanctuary knocker attached to themain gate of the medieval BrasenoseHall. At that time colleges, like

churches, enjoyed special privileges,and a fugitive from the law whoentered the gates was free frommolestation. A replica knocker isplaced above the door. The original,taken to Stamford in the 1330s and only retrieved in 1890, now hangs above high table in the collegedining hall.

Leave Brasenose College and turn left along the pavement. You may wishto take a closer look at the BodleianLibrary (a path leads off slightly to the right, between the cobbles).Alternatively, turn left down BrasenoseLane (note the medieval-style gutter)cross Turl Street and carry straight on to Market Street. There are publictoilets (including a disabled toilet -RADAR key access only) on your left.The Information Centre in Broad Streetholds RADAR keys for sale or loan.

Enter the Covered Market (laid out in1774) which was intended to housethe street markets formerly in FishStreet (St Aldate’s) and Butcher Row

(Queen Street). The market is openMonday-Saturday and offers a varietyof wares from fish to saddles, fromvegetables to children’s clothes andfrom jumpers to students’ trunks. The market traders and university have for centuries had a close, ifstormy, relationship, the one supplyingthe needs of the other. The price,quality and measures of food anddrink sold were matters of almostcontinuous dispute.

As you explore the market, look up to admire the fine 19th century rooftimbers. Follow the passage next tothe Oxford Cobbler and enter theGolden Cross yard.

The Golden Cross yard is aninteresting example of recentrenovation and restoration. In 1986-7its ancient properties were returned to their former appearance, a taskundertaken in close co-operation withthe City Council’s Conservation Officer.The existing 16th, 17th and 19thcentury buildings enclose a courtyard

formed in the Middle Ages for theCross Inn. An inn may have existed onthis site as early as 1193 when Maugerthe Vintner is recorded. During the16th century the inn was used bytravelling companies of players and itis said that Shakespeare stayed thereon occasion. The first floor of the PizzaExpress (behind you) occupies theformer bedroom accommodation of the inn and contains the majorfragments of two painted rooms, the Crown Chamber (c1570) and the Prince’s Chamber (c1595).

Unfortunately these rooms are notaccessible by wheelchair. However, the ground floor of the Pizza Expresswith its fine new conservatory isaccessible to wheelchairs (disabledtoilet available) if you would like tosample a pizza or afternoon tea.

Leaving the Golden Cross yard youarrive at thronging Cornmarket Street.Turn left down Cornmarket and youreturn to Carfax, the heart of thisunique City.

St John’sis located on St Giles (go North fromCarfax, up Cornmarket Street, keepstraight on until you come to St Giles).it is probably easier to take the righthand pavement, going North, then turn right at Broad Street and crossthe road almost immediately, intoMagdalen Street East. St John’s is a little further up on the right. Theentrance for wheelchairs is near to the Lamb and Flag Pub.
