    The Great Commandment

    Now this is the commandment the statutes and theordinances that the Lord your God charged me toteach you to observe in the land that you are about tocross into and occupy, so that you and your children andyour childrens children may fear the Lord your God allthe days of your life, and keep all his decrees and hiscommandments that I am commanding you, so that yourdays may be long. Hear therefore, O Israel, and observethem diligently, so that it may go well with you, and sothat you may multiply greatly in a land flowing withmilk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors,has promised you.

    Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God,

    the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God withall your heart, and with all your soul, and with all yourmight. Keep these words that I am commanding youtoday in your heart. ( Deuteronomy 6:1-6 )

    Psalter

    The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer,my God, my rock in whom I take refuge,my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my

    stronghold.I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised;

    so I shall be saved from my enemies.The cords of death encompassed me;

    the torrents of perdition assailed me;

    For this I will extol you, O Lord, among the nations,and sing praises to your name.

    Furthermore, the former priests were many innumber, because they were prevented by death fromcontinuing in office; but he holds his priesthoodpermanently, because he continues forever. Consequently he is able for all time to save thosewho approach God through him, since he always livesto make intercession for them.

    For it was fitting that we should have such a highpriest, holy, blameless, undefiled, separated fromsinners, and exalted above the heavens. Unlike theother high priests, he has no need to offer sacrifices dayafter day, first for his own sins, and then for those of thepeople; this he did once for all when he offeredhimself. For the law appoints as high priests those whoare subject to weakness, but the word of the oath, whichcame later than the law, appoints a Son who has beenmade perfect for ever.

    The First Commandment

    One of the scribes came near and heard themdisputing with one another, and seeing that he answeredthem well, he asked him, Which commandment is the

    first of all? Jesus answered, The first is, Hear,O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shalllove the Lord your God with all your heart, and with allyour soul, and with all your mind, and with all yourstrength. The second is this, You shall love yourneighbor as yourself. There is no other commandmentgreater than these. Then the scribe said to him, Youare right, Teacher; you have truly said that he is one,and b esides him there is no other; and to love himwith all the heart, and with all the understanding, andwith all the strength, and to love ones neighbor asoneself, this is much more important than all wholeburnt- offerings and sacrifices. When Jesus saw that heanswered wisely, he said to him, You are not far fromthe kingdom of God. After that no one dared to ask him

    any question. ( Mark 12:28-34 )
