GATHER IN GOD’S NAME HANDBELL PEAL

WELCOME THE REVEREND DAVID J. POWERS

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP “We shape our buildings, thereafter, they shape us.”

PRELUDE JOHANN NICOLAUS HANFF (1663-1711)

“EIN FESTE BURG IST UNSER GOTT” BWV 720

*CALL TO WORSHIP JEANENE MUTCHLER

God calls us to worship, and we gather,

some with laughter and songs of joy. God calls us to worship, and we gather,

some with heavy hearts and grief. God calls us to worship, and we gather,

some with eagerness and enthusiasm. God calls us to worship, and we gather,

some with distraction and exhaustion. As God’s beloved children, we bring our joy and pain, hurt and hope into this place of Spirit-given grace and renewal.

Bold text is read by the congregation. *Asterisk indicates when to stand in body or in spirit.

The Preparation for Worship is by Winston Churchill (1874-1965).

*HYMN OF CELEBRATION NO. 35 LOBE DEN HERREN

“PRAISE YE THE LORD, THE ALMIGHTY”

Hymn 35: This very strong 17th-century German hymn employs many phrases from the psalms, especially Psalms 150 and 103:1–6. It did not receive an effective English translation until the mid-19th century, but has remained popular ever since, thanks in part to its stirring tune.

Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847)

In the presence of a holy God, we become aware of the ways we fall short of God’s best hopes for us, and the ways we have hurt others. We turn to God in prayer, asking for forgiveness.

We sing in thanksgiving for the gifts of forgiveness and new life.

Passing of the Peace is one of the most ancient responses in worship. We invite you to share a sign of peace with your neighbor in a sacredly distanced way.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION REV. POWERS

God, you have given each of us many gifts, but we do not recognize them.

God, you remind us that all gifts are needed, but we convince ourselves that some gifts are more special than others.

God, you call us to work, to live, to love together as part of one body, but we decide that membership in the body is limited.

For the times we have ignored or mislabeled Your gifts, and for those times we have cut another off from the body,

We offer our repentance, and we ask for forgiveness and grace. (Silent Confession)

*KYRIE John Merbecke (1550); arr Healey Willian (1930)

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*PASSING OF THE PEACE ISABELLA TAMBURRINO The peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you!

At this time, potty-trained threes to kindergarteners are welcome to proceed to the hallway with an adult and sign in with Ms. Emily.

The sermon is a reflection on the day’s scriptures, suggesting implications for our faith and life

The Affirmation of Faith is drawn from a letter to the Romans.

ANTHEM THOMAS A. DORSEY ARR. ARNOLD SEVIER

“PRECIOUS LORD” Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand, I am tired, I am weak, I am worn through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light. Take my hand, Lord, and lead me home. When my way grows drear, precious Lord, linger near, when my life is almost gone, at the river, Lord, I stand, guide my feet and hold my hand: Take my hand, Lord, and lead me home. - Thomas A. Dorsey

SERMON “FOREVER PIECES: A DESIGNER’S TOUCH”

SILENT REFLECTION

RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH REV. DORRIEN-CHRISTIANS

We believe there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus; for we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to God’s purpose.

We are convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS OF GOD’S PEOPLE

RITUAL OF COMMITMENT REV. POWERS & REV. DORRIEN-CHRISTIANS

CALL TO COMMITMENT

HYMN OF COMMITMENT BEACH SPRING “GOD, WHOSE GIVING KNOWS NO ENDING”

(As the third verse is sung, the congregation is invited to rise in body or spirit.)

Jane Parker Huber (1926-2008)

During this time, we invite you to both make your 2022 commitment and your weekly offering to the church. Commitment and giving information is available through Realm.

Hymn 716: This text on stewardship was one of about 450 submissions in a search for such hymns conducted by the Hymn Society of America in 1961. These words are well grounded by their musical setting, an early American shape note tune named for a Baptist church in Harris County, Georgia.

*LITANY OF COMMITMENT Generous God, you have made a world for us and given us incomparable gifts: air and water, family and friends, your steadfast love and forgiveness, and your son Jesus the Christ.

For all the gifts and wonders you have bestowed on us, We thank you and worship you with renewed gratitude.

Giver of life, you created us to love one another as Christ has loved us. We are eager to participate in the work of the Church and to further the ministry and service of this congregation.

We are called to be your stewards so we commit to thoughtfully shoulder our personal share of responsibility, and we commit to witness to the good news of Christ with our hearts and hands and voices.

Gracious one, we are confident in your love and care for us and we trust that you have faithful plans for us. Grant us generous hearts and courageous spirits to do the things you call us to do.

We join with our church family in committing faithfully and sowing bountifully in the year ahead.

*PRAYER O God, throughout the ages you have challenged your people to step out in faith and follow you. You have put purpose and direction in the lives of your people. We have before us a new direction and a new purpose. We have set our feet on the pathway. Be our guide. Whisper in our ears when we need to make decisions. Hold us up if we start to stumble. May your Holy Spirit lead us in joyful song and fill us with eager anticipation. You are our vision, O God; lead us on our journey. Amen.

Hymn 700: This African American spiritual has more depth than may at first appear: for people who are bound in slavery to sing about dedicating themselves to God’s use shows a profound awareness of God-given self-worth despite circumstances that would deny their human or spiritual value.

Please keep sacred distance as you leave church.

*HYMN OF SENDING NO. 700 I’M GONNA LIVE

“I’M GONNA LIVE SO GOD CAN USE ME”

*CHARGE & BENEDICTION REV. POWERS

WELCOME NOTICES

Welcome to Idlewild! We are glad to have you join us for worship.

If you are new to Idlewild, it is our prayer that you will experience the presence of God while you are here. At Idlewild, it is our hope that all who enter find a home.

Children are always welcome in worship. In addition, childcare for children 6 weeks—2 years is available in the Jones Building in Room 153. During the 11:00 service there is a special Time with the Younger Church, after which children who are potty-trained ages 3 years—5 years may go to Worship and Wonder located in the Old Library on the second level. Parents pick up children from Worship and Wonder following the conclusion of worship. Children of all ages are invited to pick up a worship packet in the main hallway that can be utilized to enhance their worship experience.

New members are received by the Session. If you are seeking a church home, we invite you to join the Idlewild family. Please call (901)726-4681 during the week.

For confidential prayer requests, call the prayer chain, (901)487-6062.
