Hymn and Songs of Praise

I Heard the Voice Of Jesus Say

I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto me and rest; lay down O weary one, lay down your head upon my breast.”

I came to Jesus as I was, so weary and worn and sad; I found in him a resting place, and he has made me glad.

I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold I freely give

the living water, thirsty one; stoop down and drink and live.”

I came to Jesus and I drank of that life giving stream; my thirst was quenched my soul revived and now I live in him.

I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this dark world’s light. Look unto me your morn shall rise and all your day be bright.”

I looked to Jesus and I found in him my star my sun; and in that light of life I'll walk ‘till travelling days are done. (repeat last two lines)

O God Of Mercy Hear My Plea

O God, we’ve seen your faithfulness; you brought us from the wilderness. But now, our faith is frail and weak. O God of mercy, hear our plea.

When will you comfort our distress? How long until the promised rest?

We cry to you from deepest need, O God of mercy, hear our plea.

Chorus: Abba, Father, our Redeemer, in this barren land be our hope and strength.

Until glory we will trust and sing, Abba, Father, hear our plea.

We join creation’s longing groan to take your ransomed children home. For then the eyes of all will see the God of mercy hears our plea. Chorus

For then the eyes of all will see the God of mercy hears our plea. Chorus

Abba, Father, hear our plea. I Love You, Lord

I love you, Lord, and I lift my voice to worship you, O my soul, rejoice!

Take joy my King, in what you hear: may it be a sweet, sweet sound in your ear.

Confession of Faith based on Psalm 91

We believe that God is our refuge and our fortress. We trust in the Most High God, who promises to protect us, because he knows our names. When we call to him, he will answer us; when we are in trouble, he is with us, he will rescue and honor us.

Call to Confession of Sin Psalm 115:9

Leader: O Israel, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.

Confession of Sin Psalm 146:3

All: Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.

Silent Confession

Assurance of Pardon Psalm 9:10; I John 5:4-5

Leader: And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you. All: For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. Leader: And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. All: Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Sermon Hymn

O God, Be Merciful To Me (verses 1-3) O God, be merciful to me; I am distressed by enemies on every side. They slander me in what they say, attacking me from day to day in all their pride. Sometimes I am afraid, O LORD, but I believe your promised word that you are near. What treachery can mortals raise? I trust in God, whose word I praise. I will not fear. I am surrounded every day by those who plot to take away my very life. When they conspire to do me harm, O LORD lift up your mighty arm and stop their strife.

Old Testament Reading I Samuel 21:10-15

10 And David rose and fled that day from Saul and went to Achish the king of Gath. 11 And the servants of Achish said to him, “Is not this David the king of the land? Did they not sing to one another of him in dances,

‘Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands’?”

12 And David took these words to heart and was much afraid of Achish the king of Gath. 13 So he changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands and made marks on the doors of the gate and let his spittle run down his beard. 14 Then Achish said to his servants, “Behold, you see the man is mad. Why then have you brought him to me? 15 Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to behave as a madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?”

Psalter Reading Psalm 56

To the choirmaster: according to The Dove on Far-off Terebinths. A Miktam of David, when the Philistines seized him in Gath. 1 Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me;

all day long an attacker oppresses me; 2 my enemies trample on me all day long,

for many attack me proudly. 3 When I am afraid,

I put my trust in you. 4 In God, whose word I praise,

in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?

5 All day long they injure my cause;

all their thoughts are against me for evil. 6 They stir up strife, they lurk;

they watch my steps, as they have waited for my life.

7 For their crime will they escape?

In wrath cast down the peoples, O God!

8 You have kept count of my tossings;

put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?

9 Then my enemies will turn back

in the day when I call. This I know, that God is for me.

10 In God, whose word I praise,

in the Lord, whose word I praise, 11

in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me?

12 I must perform my vows to you, O God;

I will render thank offerings to you. 13

For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling,

that I may walk before God in the light of life.

Sermon “In God I Trust” Ken Langley

Hymn of Rejoicing

O God, Be Merciful to Me (verses 4-5) O LORD, take note of my lament. Do you not list each tear I shed, upon your scroll? What treachery can mortals raise? I trust in God, whose word I praise. He guards my soul. To you, O LORD, I pay my vow as I, with thankful offerings, bow before your face. For you delivered me from death and set me safely on the path of life and grace.

– THE GOD OF ALL COMFORT –

The Psalms for February 21—27

The Daily Psalms

King David is one of most interesting figures in the Scriptures. He was the youngest of eight brothers, a shepherd, poet, musician, warrior, sinner, king and a man after God’s own heart. David fought lions and bears and even fought Goliath, the Philistine giant, when no one else would. He became more popular than King Saul (I Samuel 8:6-7 “As they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments.

7 And the women sang to one another as they celebrated, “Saul has

struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands.”) He was best friends with Jonathan, Saul’s son, and married Saul’s daughter, Michal. David would play the lyre (a stringed instrument) and sooth King Saul’s rage. God eventually rejected Saul as King and anointed David, which made Saul furious and he became determined to kill David. David had to flee and trust God with his life. David is famous for his kingship as well as his moral downfall with Bathsheba. He also famous for his confession of this sin in 2 Samuel 10-11 and Psalm 51. David’s life has much to teach us about human success, failure, sin and the depth of God’s love, mercy and forgiveness for sins which gravely offend him.

O God, Be Merciful to Me (see bulletin, p. 8, for sheet music) Psalm 56 – See page 3 of the bulletin Questions for reflection and discussion It will help to read I Samuel 21:10-15 as a background to this psalm. Notice how many times David mentions words of attack (tramples, attacker, enemies, injure, etc.). What is David’s mood in this psalm? Who are David’s enemies in this psalm? It may help to consult I Samuel 21 and to consider what caused David to flee in the first place. Does David remain hopeless in this psalm? Is there a turning point? Think of a low point in your life. How would you apply this psalm’s teachings to your life? How does God work in David’s heart during this event? Remember he’s away from his people and seems to have no friends or allies.

How can Jesus sympathize with us when we are at a low point?

Discuss the difficulties of trusting God when things are going well and when they are going poorly (see v. 9).
