Creative artefact - 9 Key Frames

These are my 9 key frames for my creative artefact. My actors and actresses had performed in each scene as I have taken photographs to show the action-taking place. Throughout the whole production I had selected the 9 best photos, which represents the chronological sequence for my film. The photographs that I have selected help to demonstrate a clear narrative of the film as well as my script helps to demonstrate the narrative.

Key Frame 1

Rikhel Trivedi

Scenario: The two characters, the protagonist Teresa and the donor, Shrina are walking towards the front gates of the school, Teresa and Shrina leave the school making their way home.

Cinematography: A long shot is used allowing the audience to see the two characters, Teresa and Shrina walking towards the front gates. The long shot shows more of the location allowing showing the surroundings that make up the school such as the basketball court to the audience. The long shot helps to show how Teresa (the protagonist) is happy and friendly and is also close good friends with Shrina as the shot makes it seem that the characters are having a strong conversation.

Sound: In this scene calm, relaxing fast tempo score music is used to emphasis the characters mood. The non-diegetic sounds helps to create a peaceful environment showing no horror conventions in the film between the characters so far, this had helped me to make the audience feel comfortable with the characters.

Mise en scene: The lighting used in the frame was high-key lighting making the location seem even more realistic and making the scene and peaceful environment. The body language used between the characters immediately portrays that the two characters are friends as the characters positions are very close to each other making it seem that they are comfortable with each other. The costumes and props used in the scene help to establish that the characters are leaving the school. The props used are their school bags this helps to imply to the audience that the two teenagers are leaving school as well as the smart dress costumes help to identify the character.

Key Frame 2

Scenario: Teresa and Shrina have reached at a intersect where the characters take different paths. The two teenagers are hugging and saying their goodbyes since they are separating as they take different routes from this point.

Cinematography: A wide long shot is used as to show the two characters say their goodbyes. The shot shows to the audience that the two characters are going to be alone from now till they reach home. The long shot allows the audience to see the houses and vehicles in the surroundings of the characters helping to make the scene seem ordinary without foreshadowing any bad happenings.

Sound: The continuation of the peaceful non-diegetic music from the previous scene is still playing the background helping to maintain the peaceful environment.

Mise en scene: The character are positioned very close to each other making it easy for the audience to understand that what is going as they are at a intersect and to show relationship between the two girls which they are good friends. The costumes that the characters are wearing are their school uniform, which connotes that the protagonist is a normal sensitive innocent girl, this relates to the high key lighting used in the scene as the high key lighting suggests that the protagonist doesn’t like to be late.

Key Frame 3

Rikhel Trivedi

Scenario: Teresa is waking by herself since she has taken a separate route compared to her friend Shrina. As Teresa walks alone in the pathway she is being watched over by the antagonist from far behind without her knowing.

Cinematography: An over the shoulder shot is used to present the antagonist watch Teresa walking by herself at a far distance. The shot allows the audience to see Teresa stopped with her head half turned which connotes that she is suspicious and she has a feeling that someone is watching over her. However the shot reverse shot introduces some of the antagonist as the audience are able to see the antagonist mask which creates an enigma within the audience on who is this man? The angle of this shot is set to show how isolated the location is as there is nothing around the characters part from shut garages building a small amount of tension as someone is following her without her even noticing. This shot relates to the film, The Woman in Black as throughout the film the protagonist is not aware of their surroundings therefore Teresa is not fully focused on what is actually happening around her as she is looking at the floor.

Sound: There is a slow tempo dynamic music supporting this shot, helping to start to build up tension as she is not by herself and that the audience are able to see someone watch over her, giving the audience a chance to imply on what may happen next. By having the protagonist isolated it makes the audience fear for the character.

Mise en scene: The over the shoulder shot lets the audience barely see parts of the antagonist mask which helps to create a suspense as the mask makes the audience feel sick and creped out the antagonist is wearing a black blazer implying to the audience that he is motivated about stalking as he wants to look good when facing his victims. The dull and boring artificial lighting helps to build fear as it makes the setting more isolated which helps to make the audience fear for the character.

Key Frame 4

Rikhel Trivedi

Scenario: In this moment Teresa has took a shortcut home away from the mainstream roads, she walks through a pathway by herself, she then and then hears someone calling her name as she is at the end of the pathway. Teresa is confused and is having doubts and thinks that she is imagining that she’s hearing things but far behind her, at the start of the pathway is the antagonist watching Teresa look confused, the antagonist is wearing full black clothing helping to connote that he is evil and scary helping the audience to identify what role he has in the film.

Cinematography: A wide close up is used to establish what is around Teresa and able to displaying Teresa’s facial expressions. By looking at Teresa’s facial expressions the audience can simply identify that she is confused and imply that she heard something therefore she has the worried doubtful look on her face.

Sound: The scene is supported by dynamic drumming music that is non-diegetic which is at a low volume but gradually increasing helping to build the intensity to the scene. The purpose of using dynamic drumming is to cause an affect within the audience to hint and foreshadow that the action is coming closer to scene.

Mise en scene: High key lighting is used as it helps as a director I wanted the audience to see everything I wanted them to see especially the antagonist at the back as he helps to connote different scenarios to the audience so it was essential that high key lighting was used as anything wasn’t too difficult to see clearly. The costumes are the same for Teresa as the previous scenes, but for the antagonist behind Teresa he is in a full black suit connoting to the audience that he is evil and scary.

Key Frame 5

Scenario: This is where the action starts to build up as Teresa continues to walk thinking that she is just imagining that she is hearing things. She then goes through a broken gate, which leads to an even more isolated pathway. The purpose of using this location was to create an affect to the audience by making them fear more for the character as the audience has already seen the antagonist behind her in the other pathway. In this scene Teresa gets a phone call.

Cinematography: A medium close up is used and in the scene the medium shot is used to show Teresa take her phone out of her school bag as her mobile phone rings. Through Teresa facial expressions the audience can imply that Teresa is not so pleased and more worried about her phone ringing suggesting that she already knows who the caller is.

Sound: Diegetic sound of her phone ringtone is used releasing the fear and tension in the environment making Teresa seem less isolated as she has someone to talk to and let someone know if anything were to happen.

Mise en scene: The high key lighting in the scene permits the audience to see Teresa’s surroundings such as the damaged gate and some of the pathways behind her displaying if anybody is actually following Teresa as from also in this scene the high key lighting allows the audience to see Teresa take her phone out of her school bag.

Key Frame 6

Rikhel Trivedi

Scenario: Teresa’s takes her phone out and glares at the caller screen and see’s ‘No Caller ID’ making it a suspicion, as nobody knows who is on the other line of the phone.

Cinematography: This scene is all shown through an over the shoulder shot, this helps the audience to get a close enough perspective of what Teresa is looking at. By looking at the previous scenes the ‘No Caller ID’ on her phone implies to the audience that it is the antagonist who the audience had seen in the previous scenes making them fear for the character implying that Teresa is in danger.

Sound: Non-Diegetic, fast paced dynamic drumming music is being played in this scene to build fear within the audience giving a chance to the audience to think on who it could be phoning Teresa. The fast paced music helps to foreshadow that action is coming close to the scene.

Mise en scene: High key lighting is again used in the scene to allow the audience to see the phone screen clearly and small details on the phone screen such as the caller ID. The over the shoulder this granted the audience to see how the grass and greenery is not treated with care as the grass looks ripped out and not been treated which connotes to the audience that Teresa has took a pathway where it seems to be nobody takes, this builds on fear for Teresa even more. Props used in the scene is her mobile phone as this prop is the source of the build-up for the action so far.

Key Frame 7

Rikhel Trivedi

Scenario: Teresa eventually picks up the phone call she then immediately hears diegetic dialogue “Teresa, I can see youuu” Teresa face drops to a straight face and panics, Teresa then yells out in dialogue “ Who are you! LEAVE ME ALONE!”

Cinematography: A close up of Teresa to show fear through Teresa’s facial expressions on when she picks up her phone call especially Teresa’s eyes are wide opened portraying that she is scared, this helps displays fear to the scene as her facial expressions fit in with the horror codes and conventions in a film as the audience straight away know that she is in danger. The close up shows Teresa’s facial expressions which allows the audience to imply Teresa’s fearful thoughts and scared feeling as she answers.

Sound: While Teresa’s answers the phone call, soft slow tempo score music is used to set the pace but then diegetic dialogue is used as the caller replies. This sets the tensions as the score music changes to heavy fast paced music increasing the intensity to the scene. As a director I had to make the audience fear for the protagonist till the end of the scene. Teresa’s dialogue replies to the caller “LEAVE ME ALONE” this signifies to the audience that this is not the first time and that Teresa has been followed before but leaving it all for the audience to have their own background story for Teresa.

Mise en scene: The mise en scene in this scene will be similar to the previous key frames as what all that is surrounding Teresa is greenery which suggests to the audience to think she is not safe as there is nothing else around her. The audience are able to see a pathway which is not officially made, the pathway is path where the grass has stopped growing illustrating that she is not safe as there is not been an official pathway made making Teresa seem isolated.

Key Frame 8

Rikhel Trivedi

Scenario: Teresa looks around and panics as she looks at her phone she then throws her mobile phone as well as her school bag to the floor and runs away, as Teresa runs away she looks back at her phone and continues to run thinking that someone is following her.

Cinematography: A low angled long shot focused on Teresa’s mobile phone and school bag. The shot is used to signify to the audience that someone is following her and that could be the reason on why Teresa is running away from her phone. In the shot we are able to see Teresa running away from her as she looks back on her phone suggesting that someone is following her and that this is not the first time. The shot also helps to see Teresa running away but still looking at her phone making her unaware on what is happening in front of her.

Sound: In this frame there will be non-diegetic orchestral score music building up the tension within the audience. The orchestral will be foreshadowing that the audience are going to see the antagonist again anytime soon.

Mise en scene: The same type of greenery would be in the surrounding but in this position the camera would be surrounded by grass and showing how isolated the pathway Teresa has took and how the pathway is not an official common pathway, helping to maintain the isolation within the setting. This relates to The Woman in Black as similar codes and conventions are used as in the film the director had showed the surroundings and to show the audience how isolated the setting looks where as I have used similar techniques, by showing the audience how there is nowhere to go and there is nothing but grass and greenery around her building on fear for the Teresa. The high key lighting used helps to show the greenery and the props clearly without making it difficult to see.

Key Frame 9

Rikhel Trivedi

Scenario: In this dangerous scene, this is where Teresa is still running and hasn’t looked in front of her still due to the fact that she is scared and thinking someone is following her. Teresa is running and does not know there if a creepy man in a full black suit.

Cinematography: A wide long shot is used to show Teresa still looking back in fear through Teresa facial expressions. In this shot it allows to show Teresa looking around in fear to see if there is anybody who can help. The wide shot is used to establish more of the setting to the audience showing how there is nowhere Teresa could go as all there is, is an empty field.

Sound: Non-diegetic, fast paced score music, is supported while Teresa is running but when she stops to run the music stops immediately and no score music is being played. As the silence continues Teresa would turn around and see’s, a man in a mask who it seems to be following her since the beginning. Teresa then turns behind her to see if there is anyone around to help her. Diegetic dialogue is used as Teresa screams implying that her life is almost over.

Mise en scene: The costumes which are used in this frame is the antagonist in a full black suit which relates to, The Woman in Black and Mama as the antagonist in the two films are in black as black connotes evil and death and many other negative things to the audience. The antagonist is also wearing a creepy bug face mask which is not normally seen by anyone. This fits in with the horror codes and conventions of a film as in horror films the antagonist normally scares the audience. The props used in this scene is a wooden baseball bat which the antagonist is holding making it seem that he is going to attack Teresa with the wooden baseball bat. Teresa eventually stops screaming and opens her eyes and see’s nobody in front of her or anywhere near her making it seem it was all her imagination.
