8th Grade ELA Grading and Work Policy- Home Copy aka Everything You Need To Know To Earn The Best Possible Grade aka Expecting The Most From Capable 8th Graders Preparing For The Future 1. Classwork and homework is expected on time. Late work is graded for accuracy first, then points are deducted for each day late. 1 day late = -11 points 2 days late = - 21 points 3 days late =-30 points 4 or more days late = 0 2. Most (if not all) assignments and resources are found in our Google Classroom. When you miss class for any reason other than illness (ie- orthodontist appointment, school trips, tardy or leave early, out of town...) it is expected that you keep up in Google classroom as if you were in class. 3. If you are absent due to illness and feel well enough to work from home, it is expected that you keep up with your work in Google classroom. If you do not feel well enough to work, keep up as best you can, and email me for new deadlines. Generally speaking, you have as many days as you were absent to complete missing assignments. 4. When you are absent, it is completely your responsibility to make sure you have completed all assignments and watched any videos posted for the day you missed. It is expected that you ask for any additional make-up work the first day you are back. I will not come to you about the work you missed. Helpful hint: “Good morning, Mrs. Lewis. I kept up with Google Classwork yesterday during my absence, and I want to check for anything else I missed from your wonderful class,” is MUCH BETTER than “Did I miss anything yesterday”. 5. If you miss school for any reason on the day an announced test was planned or a project was due, it is expected that you take the test/bring the project on the first day you return. There are very few exceptions to this, and I am the only one who decides them. Do not assume you will be one. 6. The only way to be certain work is not missing is the Student/Parent Portal of INFINITE CAMPUS. Students can turn in blank assignments or simply mark assignments as “complete” when they, in fact, are not. (It may surprise you to learn that 8th graders have been known to do such things before.) Infinite Campus will have the most up-to-date scores, not Google. It is expected that you check Infinite Campus each week. 7. Extra credit is offered only at the beginning of each 9 weeks. It is always optional. It is expected that you make a deposit before you need a withdrawal. 8. Your grades reflect your level of understanding of a particular assignment. They do not reflect who you are as a human being. Asking questions is a good thing. It is expected that you see mistakes as opportunities. 9. You are allowed to request to redo any classwork assignment on which you scored less than 75%. It is expected that you initiate any attempt to redo assignments within three days of the grade posting. In other words, do not wait until just before progress reports and report cards to ask to redo classwork. 10. Periodically, I make a mistake in grading. If the mistake would work in your favor, politely bring it to my attention. It is expected that you self-advocate. 11. You are the student. I do not teach your parents. However, you are in 8th grade, not high school or college. Communication about grades and progress will begin with teacher and student and will include parents. It is expected that students take primary responsibility for initiating communication- questions, clarification, requests- and copy parents in all emails to the teacher. 12. Learning takes effort, which is usually reflected in grades. I am much more concerned with your learning than I am with your grade. It is expected that you try. Your best. Everyday.
