The Algebra section has just completed Unit 1, which had an additional focus on scientific notation and integer properties.

The 8th grade welcomes Mr. Joseph, where the classes are learning about Reform Movements in the 1800’s. They are learning about the relationship between the institution of slavery and the need for those movements. Students are also making connections to

ELA/MATH INTERVENTION

The 8th Grade ELA and Math Intervention classes, taught by Mr. Pinkett and Ms. Patrick, will be working with iReady to address skills that need to be reinforced and/or re-taught. The students have already taken their diagnostic assessments and are working in small groups to improve their literacy and problem solving skills.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION/HEALTH

This year 8th Grade students will have the opportunity to take Health, taught by Mr. Barriga. The first unit was the skeletal system, where the students learned about the different bones in the body and how they all work together. Students recently took their exam on the skeletal system. Six students scored over a 95%, and three students – Paige R., Tyler S., and Sayon B. – scored a 100%! Congratulations to all!! Physical Education classes started this year with class rules and stressed the idea of “Safety First.” They are now moving into physical fitness testing, testing for cardiovascular endurance, upper body core, and lower body muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility range of motion around the joints.

ENRICHMENT

This year IPCS is offering more enrichment opportunities for our students. We welcome back Ms. Dreger who is excited to work with our fantastic and talented dancers. We also welcome our new art teacher Mr. Moussavi and our music teachers, Mr. Jones and Ms. Robbi. In addition to Dance, Art, and Music, we are offering Spoken Word/Hip Hop, taught by Ms. Mothersil and Media Arts, taught by Ms. Huie. The students are excited about these new offerings and cannot wait to demonstrate their talents.

FROM THE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT

Ms. Cupid is back, working with our 8th Grade students, helping them reach their greatest potential academically, socially, and emotionally. Currently, the 8th Grade is in the midst of the High School Application process. All families are encouraged to attend open houses and information sessions for various high schools throughout the city. In addition, students and families should be looking through the high school directory to begin to narrow down their top 12 choices. Reminder the SHSAT is October 22 and 23. All students who are taking this test should be actively preparing. Review books can be purchased at bookstores like Barnes & Noble or online at Amazon.com.

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

Mr. Burhans is working with our 8th Grade students, helping strengthen the foundational skills that are needed to be successful with the ELA and Math curriculum. Skills that are focused on in small, more personalized sessions will help the students become more proficient with more complex tasks and concepts.
