From our President …

Strengthen our Wings:Rediscover, Revitalize,RestructureKAREN FAYARD, Zeta State President

Our theme for this biennium is Strengthen ourWings: Rediscover, Revitalize, Restructure. At thestate level, the restructuring began at the stateconvention when the membership voted to accept therevised Bylaws and Standing Rules. We are now in theprocess of implementing the changes. The Policies andProcedures Committee has spent many hours editing themanual to reflect the changes instituted by therestructured Bylaws. After state convention, in lateApril the executive team met at headquarters to refinethe goals for the biennium and to discuss ways toimplement them easily. Committee chairmen met in midAugust to review committee responsibilities and whattheir roles will be in carrying out the goals. Thecommittees have begun meeting and implementing thechanges as they plan for the first year of this biennium. The district directors and assistant directors have metand set the place and date for each of the districtmeetings. They have great workshops planned so markyour calendars and make plans to attend.

A highlight of preparing for the 2011-2013biennium was the training that members of the executiveteam received at the regional conference in Louisville. Those members who were in training at some timeduring the conference were Linda Lightsey, ExecutiveSecretary; Toni Cook, First Vice President and Chairmanof the Educational Excellence Committee; Sarah Smith,Treasurer; Karen Rhodes, Chairman of the MembershipCommittee; Aleta Sullivan, Zeta Data Editor; andmyself. We all received a plethora of information, andwe are eager to share with our members at districtmeetings and at the New Chapter Officers retreat.

It is an honor for me to serve the members of ZetaState this biennium! I wish that I could visit everychapter, but I know there is no way to do that. I am a fulltime math instructor at a local community college andwhen I am not there, class does not take place. Pleaseinvite another officer, state committee chairman ormember of the Order of Magnolia to be a guest at achapter meeting this biennium. There is a list bydistricts of those ladies for you to use. Anyone listedwill meet the honor chapter requirement!

I look forward tomeeting many of youthroughout this first yearat chapter meetings andthe district meetings!Have a great year!

The Metamorphosis of a LeaderLeadership Skills Seminar at Plymouth Bluff

June, 2011

from Teri Edwards

While butterflies floated aimlessly amongst thebeautiful wildflowers at the Plymouth Bluff NatureCenter, a metamorphosis of another type was takingplace inside. Nine women were focused onsharpening leadership skills and becoming betterinformed about their personal attributes. Withguidance from the state leadership team as well asan amazing array of outstanding professionals, there emerged a new class of Delta Kappa Gammaleaders armed with self confidence, inspired byworthy examples, and equipped with skills andstrategies for success.

Participants were introduced to the MyersBriggs Type Indicator and completed a survey tofind out more about their own individualpersonality types. Dr. Jimmy Richardson, a privateconsultant, began the Leadership Seminar with anoverview and a survey, then came back with ananalysis of results that helped participantsunderstand their personalities better.

Janis McCoy challenged the group to thinkabout setting personal goals that were SMART -specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, andtimely. An awareness of healthy lifestyle pluspersonal fitness assessments were presented by theamazing Sarah Smith – an inspiration to all DKGmembers in Zeta state and beyond. Betty Farmer,RN from Meridian, gave a frank and informativetalk about women’s health with a focus on breast

cancer awareness. Self defense tips and tacticswere revealed by Columbus city policeman, JamesGrant , with Cynthia Colburn aiding in thedemonstrations. Society members Betty Barrettand Carol Rigby shared knowledge on law from awoman’s perspective and making a good firstimpression along with business etiquette. JeanRiggs inspired everyone with tips for making lifefun as she shared DKG lagniappe.

When participants reached informationsaturation, fun and relaxing activities planned byRegina Gandy provided a refreshing change ofpace. The seminar attendees expressed themselvescreatively in a variety of ways. Perhaps the best“take away” from the entire seminar wasdeveloping deep and lasting friendships with otherDKG members from across the state. There wastime to get to know each other, to appreciate theindividual strengths and diversity of the group andto share goals, dreams, ideas, and even frustrations.

Plymouth Bluff was a great venue – plenty ofspace, nice facilities, relaxing environment, and thefood was really wonderful. There wereopportunities to hike on trails, watch hummingbirdsand butterflies, sit on the terrace and see theTombigbee River float by, and visit in the lodge. The State Leadership Team worked very hard toplan meaningful activities, delicious meals, and fundiversions.

Nancy Jay was the leader and facilitator of thegroup, and did an excellent job of keepingparticipants focused and motivated as the totaltransformation into committed, informed, andaware DKG members took place. A graduationceremony concluded the experience. Then, everyone had a chance for one last laugh together as“butterflies” emerged during a skit which recappedall the activities of the seminar. The LeadershipSeminar is a great opportunity to get to know othersin the sisterhood from across the state and to get toknow yourself and your potential. As Nancy said,“This is a gift that you give yourself.”

Zeta State was very well represented during theSoutheast Regional Conference in Louisville,Kentucky. Common thought is that we had 38Mississippi members in attendance. We had greatworkshops to attend, but you know the Mississippiladies really liked the crafting sessions!A favorite session was Iris Folding where we made

beautiful cardss from strips of paper. I think youcan look forward to similar sessions at districtmeetings. We did actually attend other meetings, including a wonderful session by Jodie Blanco on

the subject of School Bullying. Her book, Not JustJoking Around – Understanding School BullyingThrough the Eyes of a Former Victim is a New YorkTimes bestseller and is referred to as the “anti-bullying bible.”DOT, EDNA, LYNN

OUR CHAPTER – Program Ideas from DKG.org

Targeted Society PurposeTo unite women educators of the world in a genuine spiritual fellowship

Program PlanTo learn about our chapter and its individual members. This is a good program to use periodically, especially if it is a large chapter or after initiating new members. It involves using a member profileto gather data about the chapter. Sharing the description of the chapter enables the members to talkabout chapter diversity, uniqueness of each member and the talent she contributes to the chapter.

Process/ActivityMembership chair prepares the chapter member profi le which can be found onwww.deltakappagamma.org. Data may need to be collected several weeks prior to the meeting, if thechapter does not have a current member profi le. A picture of the chapter is presented using the datacollected. ¬ en pass a bowl of M and M’s and ask each member to take just one. Go around the groupand ask each member to give one or two sentences about herself according to the color she selected.
