troubles in life. Each week brings a set of troubles that can seem almost endless and insurmountable. Such a list for recent weeks might be:

Acts of Terrorism (the Boston Marathon Bombings) Earthquakes (Sichuan province of China) Flooding (the Midwest) Explosions (West, Texas) Conflicts (Syria) Threats of conflicts (North Korea)

We could add to the list the troubles that seem ongoing no matter the generation: homelessness, poverty, hunger, environmental issues like pollution, sustaining enough re-sources for a growing world population, and prejudice to-wards people of all kinds which leads to acts of violence or harassment or oppression. Then, we can make a list of troubles that may affect us or our family: poor health, unemployment or stress in the workplace, loss of a loved one, broken relationships, deal-ing with a disability, bullying, struggling with an addiction,

seem overwhelming. Sadly, Christians too often succumb to the negativity and anxiety that is so pervasive in the world. It seems that the good news begins to sink under the weight of the bad news. Friends, we must not let that happen. If we, the people of hope and saved by Christ, cannot believe this very simple but profound statement in Psalm 46:1, then we have lost one of the most essential components of our faith trust in God. We lean on God. We endure. We trust that we will not only get through, but we will overcome. God is with us

a very present help even in times of trouble. Peace and Goodwill, Rev. Anne

ENVIROMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

What does the United Methodist Church believe?

All creation is under the authority of God and all creation is in-terdependent (what one person does impacts every other per-son on Earth). Stewardship has to do with how we bring all of the resources at our disposal into efficient use in our participa-tion in the saving activity of God. As stewards of the natural environment, we are called to preserve and restore the air, wa-ter, and land on which all life depends. Moreover, we are called to see that all life has sufficient share of the resources of na-ture.

ards for his creation, we have a responsibility to protect his creation and to insure that the resources of his creation are available for all the future generations to come.

The cost is $10.00. You just pull in the parking lot and park any place, open your trunk and set up a table and all of the money you take in is yours to keep. We did it last summer and it was successful for those who participated, but it was really hot, so we are try-ing it a little earlier this year. There will be a garage sale at the center the same day so that should help increase traf-fic. conjunction with the sale. So, tell all of your friends and we hope to see you there.

From Pastor Ron Carlson There has been some conversation regarding the Wedding Ministry, and I would like to take this time to clarify where we are with this vital ministry. As a bit of history, the Wedding Ministry has been thriving since before I arrived

since I have arrived we have hosted in the area of 40-50 weddings a year, with

some weekends having up to four weddings. Due to the Wedding Ministry we have had many opportunities to meet new people and develop life long relationships. While the wedding ministry as it was conceived yielded much fruit, it also produced much stress on the clergy and the church building, especially in our scheduling. Due to these stresses, I have modified our Wedding Ministry slightly. We will continue to welcome non-member wed-dings and host families without a local church relationship. The change occurs in the fact that I am limiting our non-member weddings to one per weekend. This will reduce my stress level and allow scheduling room for funerals and other needs on weekends. This change has reduced the number of weddings we per-

scheduled this year with 90% of them being non-members. This reduced number will allow me to better build relation-ships with those couples that choose our church for their wedding. If you have any questions about this ministry or any others, please feel free to contact Pastor Ron.

MISSIONS UPDATE Willie Trusheim, Missions Committee Coordinator

DON' T LET THE BED BITES GET PEOPLE!! Our May Manna for Missions Offering is for Malaria Nets in Af-rica. Most of Africa is threatened by Malaria. In South Sudan, Lynn and Sharon Fogleman sleep under a Malaria Net every night. Someone dies from Malaria every few seconds. The need for Nets is huge. The Iowa Conference has a goal of $2,000,000.00 to buy Nets and other medical needs. So far $500,000.00 has been raised or commit-ted. The medically treated mosquito nets cost about $10.00 each. The goal is to be raised in 18 months. So what can we contribute?? We gave $2,125 in February for blankets used in disaster needs. So we can give $2,000.00 TO SAVE LIVES FROM DYING WITH MA-LARIA?? WE CAN DO IT!! IF 200 PEOPLE GAVE $10.00 = $2,000. TWO PEOPLE CAN'T GO OUT TO EAT FOR THAT FOR TWO COMBO MEALS AT A FAST FOOD PLACE OR ANYWHERE ELSE. SO WE CAN GIVE UP ONE MEAL OUT TO SAVE A LIFE?? Can you give $5,$10, $20? AN ENVELOPE WILL BE PROVIDED FOR YOUR GIFT, OR MARK

OR YOU CAN GIVE ANYTIME IN MAY. Thanks for giving!! Missions Committee THE CUPBOARD IS EMPTY AT RED BIRD FOOD PANTRY!! A plea has been sent out to help feed people in Red Bird where thou-sands of coal miners have been laid off. Federal fund support has not been sent for over a year and pantry shelves are empty. Tracy Nolan said "I am sickened that the next person coming in the door will not get milk or food." The need is 24/7. Our gift will help provide food and garden seeds for summer produce. We know our own community food pantry has also experienced more demand as well. Red Bird is one of the 10 poorest counties in America. Will you consider a gift--any amount will be helpful. All giving has been down at Red Bird in 2013. The medical clinic and school have also had lower contributions this year. Mark your gift for Red Bird Food Pantry when you give any time in May or June. Thanks for giving. PRAYER NEEDS: --Red Bird Clinic medical outreach health care. --Lynn Fogleman, who has some stomach health issues. --Red Bird Mission School finance needs. --Families in Red Bird who have lost jobs --Churches in Red Bird needing support because of unemployment. --Needs of people in our own community--food, spiritual life, health needs, etc.

PARTICIPATING IN THE MAY 19TH FIRST

PLACES OF WORSHIP Our Church will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sun-day afternoon, May 19, for visitors. We will feature the Conference Room, the Parish House, the Sanctuary, and The Center. We will need several guides from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 3 to 5 p.m. to welcome our visitors. If you are willing to help, please call Eleanor Mooney at 563-388-3544.

We all have our own times and styles of praying, but however we pray it is part of our lifeline to God! Our Je-sus Country and Living Faith! services are small, inti-mate, praying & caring groups. The prayer chain gets many requests from them. The services in the sanctuary are larger and more formal, but still there is a lot of con-cern and prayer. Prayer not only connects us with God but to each other. When we pray for others, they become known to us in a unique way. The PRAYER BOOKMARK is a part of the weekly bulle-tin. If you or a family member wants to be lifted in prayer on the bookmark and/or prayer chain, please call the church office at 324-5278 or Janice Becker at 355-3981 and let us know of your wishes or fill out a prayer card in your service and state if you want the request to be on the prayer bookmark. It will be on the prayer chain which is more private and includes a large variety of prayer concerns. It is important that we get permission to put the prayer request on the bookmark and/or chain as some people want their prayer needs to be between them and God. It is also appreciated when you let us know of changes in your prayer concern!

May 19th Event Features Hilltop Place of Worship

congregations will be open to visitors, Sunday, May 19th, for the Hilltop Campus Village Altar Crawl. Six churches in and around the boundaries of the Village will welcome visitors for a free, first-time event. Hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Participating churches are: Bethel A.M.E., First Baptist, First Christian,

Episcopal. The May 19th open house will allow the churches to show-case the architecture of their buildings, history of the churches and their congregations, as well as current com-munity programs and services. Visitors may begin their tour at any participating church where guides will be on hand to welcome guests and direct them to points of interest.

FOOD PANTRY NEWS

We had another good month for the Food Pantry with 645 items

collected. What a wide variety of items and many multiple packaged items e.g. 3 pack of corn muffin mix, 16 pack of fruit, 2-4 packs of canned chicken breast, 6 pack of toma-toes just to name a few! Also received 19 boxes of instant potatoes, 20 boxes of Hamburger Helper, 23 boxes of muf-fin mix, 68 fruit snacks, 31 cans of soup, 48 boxes of pasta, 41 boxes of Mac & cheese and 58 cans of vegeta-bles. And we had many more items contributed.

We have collected 1,726 more items this year than this time last year. Pat yourself on the back, you have done a tremendous job. Let's keep the food coming. If you can't bring it on the third Sunday, drop it off during the week to the church office. God has blessed us with being able to put food on the ta-ble for the less fortunate individuals and families. Thank you from God and myself. Sharon Imming

Pastoral Emergency Fund

Here at the church we have many resources available to us for reaching out and helping people. One of the tools at the disposal of the pastors is the Pastoral Emergency Fund. This fund allows the pastors to di-

have helped with chemo payments, rental assistance, utility bills and prescription medicines and in many other ways. The Pastoral Emergency Fund is funded by donors who have a desire to help people in a real and tangible manner. All that is received for this fund

is a non-budgeted fund that relies on the generosity of others in the church. If you would like to donate to this fund, you may make an offering on Sundays and mark

one of the pastors.

May

Pieces of Grace two or three months prior, but May is almost here. As I write this, events in Boston, MA and in West, TX have filled my week. I am tired and I feel beaten down. We live in a fallen world, and we are surrounded by all that means. Luckily we are in the middle of the Easter Season with Pentecost just around the corner. In Acts 2, we see the Day of Pentecost, the day where the promised helper

came, and the church was born. We follow the Risen Christ and at dark times like we have come through, that make me grateful. Left to our devices and minds, we will find a way to mess up. In these seasons we are reminded of all that Jesus has done for each of us. When we are tired and full of questions, there is but one way to turn;; and that is back to Jesus. As we continue to move through this life, it is my prayer that we become better at being the church Jesus intends for us to be. As we do this, we will attract those that feel beaten and tired. We will be surrounded by those needing to be loved. We may not have the answers to all of our questions, but we will know where to look for wholeness. That can only be found in Jesus. May he continue to lead us as we travel. Grace and Peace Ron

TROOP 6 NEWS By Wanda Cover

Our April outing was at Starved Rock State Park, IL. We arrived Friday evening, set up camp and prepared dinner. On Saturday morn-ing the boys served up breakfast burritos and packed sack lunches before hiking along the Illinois

River. We hoped to check out the many waterfalls along the trail, but found most of the falls were dry. Only the LaSalle Canyon falls had a small amount of water flowing over it. The scouts enjoyed climbing on the sandy rocks. Upon returning to our camp-site, we found that it had been very windy, and the wind had blown our dining fly com-pletely down. The gusts of wind would blow our tents almost flat and then they would spring back up. With the damage to our dining fly and the fore-cast of continued high winds and thunder storms overnight, we made

the decision to pack up camp and head

sion for Troop 6! On Sunday afternoon we set up our tents to check the damage, and found that we only had a few damaged tent poles. As scouts are looking

forward to attending summer camp at Loud Thunder Scout Reserva-tion, Illinois City, IL, we ask that you keep the scouts, troop leadership and our troop in your prayers.
