A guide to understanding and developing 5S in the workplace.

What is 5S

• A system to organize a workstation, a desk or any area in the workplace.

• Everything in its place and a place for everything.

What does 5S Stand for?

• Sort• Set • Shine • Standardize• Sustain

What are the Benefits of 5S?

• Safety• Space• Productivity• Reduce waste (motion)• Simplification of Tasks

Sort

• The first step in the process.• Go through all tools and materials to find only

the necessary items.• Discard ALL other items from the workspace.

Set

• A place for everything and everything in its place.

• Each item should be labeled.• Items should be arranged to promote a logical

flow.

Shine

• Keep the area clean, neat and free of dirt and debris.

• Should be maintaining cleanliness on a daily basis.

• Makes it easy to see if everything is in its place.

Standardize

• The 5S process of following the first three 5S activities should be standard.

• Each individual involved should know their direct responsibility in the area.

Sustain

• Once the other four 5S activities have been established it is important to maintain the system.

• Create checks and balances to make sure the system continues to run beyond the initial start up.
