early in the 20th Century. Withthe deepest natural harbour and

War, Prince Rupert emerged

embarkation to the North Pacifc

theatre. More than 150,000

troops passed through or livedin the city, many in ‘wartime

houses’ still evident today.

In 2007, Prince Rupert became

the newest gateway or the

frst Asia-North America trade

corridor to be created in

100 years.

For 10,000 years, its lush, sheltered harbour, nestled in the Great

Bear Rainorest, has been the ancestral home o the Tsimshian

First Nations, who created stately post-and-beam cedar houses,

magnifcent sea-going canoes, intricate jewelry and towering totem

poles. The classic art o these ancient Northwest Coast cultures,

amous around the world, is very much alive here today.

Bountiul salmon has long provided a rich source o ood and trade

or the indigenous peoples, and later or dozens o cannery villages

dotting the coast to harvest the rich salmon runs o the Skeena and

Nass rivers. The abundance o resh halibut made Prince Rupert

the “Halibut Capital o the World”. Fishing or salmon, halibut and

Dungeness crab continues to be a way o lie, and a mouth-watering

The Museum o Northern British Columbia, one o Canada’s best

natural museums, displays the magnifcent architecture o a traditional

First Nations longhouse, and artiacts and jewelry dating back to the

last ice age. Interactive demonstrations include live perormances

sharing dance, song and drama passed on a hundred generations.

The North Pacifc Cannery National Historic Site o Canada is the

oldest, longest-running and largest intact salmon cannery on the

West Coast dating back to 1889. Visitors can explore the buildings

and exhibits o this well-preserved site and learn about the

importance o the salmon canning industry to British Columbia’seconomic development and multicultural history.

The Pike Island Archaeological Site, on the traditional land o the

Coast Tsimshian Metlakatla Band, consists o fve village sites, two

last occupied 1,800 years ago. Tsimshian guides, whose ancestors

inhabited Pike Island, interpret the ancient sites or visitors rom

village layout to customs and daily liestyles. Tours include walks

through canopied rainorest and along the shoreline speckled with

petroglyphs carved in rocks.

places to see whales, with nearly

a 100% viewing success rate.

Humpbacks migrate in great

numbers in late spring to the

nutrient-rich waters o Prince

Rupert to eed throughout the

summer. These whales breach

requently, oten thrusting

themselves completely out

o the water, as well as slap their

long fns and 18-oot wide tails.

At up to 50 eet and 50 tons,

the humpbacks literally make a

big splash with North Coast whale

watchers.

Pods o orca whales are also a

common sight on Prince Rupert

whale watching tours. The area

is the year-round home o a large

population and is visited regularly

by pods o the larger transient

orcas that travel along the coast.

Also known as killer whales, these

magnifcent mammals can reach

32 eet and eight tons.

The Khutzeymateen Valley Grizzly

Bear Sanctuary, the only protected

park o its kind in Canada, is 174

square miles o spectacular

wilderness just 25 miles by water

rom Prince Rupert.

The sanctuary is home to an

estimated 70 grizzlies, the largest

concentration in British Columbia,

that congregate on the shore

during the day to eed. Access

to the wilderness sanctuary is

exclusive and only by boat. Cruise

The boat ride to Khutzeymateen
