4 Unit News June/July 2018

Presidents Report Hello to everyone, Our May meeting was a great success. We had 117 members who signed in, we always have a few who get past without signing in. We also had 19 members from 3 unit who gave up their day off to cook and serve our lunch. Crys-tal, Jacquie and Cherie from CME were also in attendance. CME held a drawing of four $25.00 gift cards to local area restaurants. Thanks to CME for their continued support of 4 Unit. We also thank Mr. John McCabe and Mr. Brady Green from Glockner Financial Group who stopped by for a visit and had information for anyone interested. Work will soon begin on the new rosters. We try to make the information in the roster as accu-rate as possible. This information is provided by you when you send in your annual dues. If you have had a change, cell phone, home phone, email or your home address, please contact Terry Hetzer so we can update our records. The rosters will be ready sometime in August and will be available at the picnic in September. Plans are in the works for the 2018 Banquet. This years Honoree will be Bob Berkemer. Date is June 21, 2018. Location is 379 W, Broad St. (Local 67) Columbus, Ohio. Social hour will be 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM, with dinner at 6:30. We have kept the prices the same as last year. Addi-tional information available in the 4 Unit News. Bob Elfline is the Chairman of the Banquet and always does a great job. Please plan on attending and help us celebrate with Bob Berkemer and his family. We also will have a new chairman, Gary Wells for the picnic this year, and I have been told that we will be going back to more of a pot luck style picnic. Please dust off your favorite recipes and plan on bringing your special cov-ered dish. It’s not too soon to start thinking about door prizes. Last year the prizes were down. I think most people enjoy the raffle. If you want to continue the raffle more people need to help with the prizes. Insurance is still the hot topic for everyone, and the discussion of the details is ongoing. Most of us don’t like change and for all of us this is going to be different.

We will continue to keep you informed, but as of now it’s about all the details of the plan. There is a plan to have a soft rollout where members can access a person from Aon, who will help them select an insurance provider. We have been told that we will be notified when this will start. We were also told that members will only have three years to enroll starting January 2019 to become enrolled or you will not be eli-gible. Those of you that are on your spouse’s insurance should take notice of this information. Equally important, if you choose to go outside of the plan provided OP&F you will LOSE your stipend and your possible $3000.00 tax deduc-tion. We were also advised that it would be ben-eficial to keep you current AARP membership. This will help most post 65 members transition into a comparable plan. As of now it seems to be the nuts and bolt and the small details that seem to be the stumbling blocks. We will try to keep you as informed as possible. A special thanks to Local 67 President Dave Montgomery and the active Columbus Firefight-ers who helped at the May meeting. Lt. Garey Borgan, Lt. Eddie Miller, Lt Bryan Groff, Lt, Sean O’Rourke. FF Mike Canter, FF Keith Ford, FF Mark Foste, FF Bill Arehart, FF Alex Rossi, FF Dan Long, FF Shaun Avery, FF Adam Fisher, FF Jon Snyder, FF Sean O’ Donnell, FF Max Hageman, FF Keith Windle, FF Rodger Rich-ards I hope I did not miss any of these hardwork-ing young men. Thanks to everyone who helped make this a great event. Wishing all our members a safe and en-joyable summer.

row will bring worries of its own. Today’s trou-ble is enough for today. It seems to me that many in our society are anxious about many, many things. Politics, violence, peace issues, economic issues and a plethora of additional concerns cause many to be anxious. Valid concern for the above problems is one thing. Speaking ill of those we disagree with is of no value; it simply alienates even more. Speaking a kind word opens doors to bet-ter conversation and problem solving. Bad-mouthing an adversary seldom produces any profitable result. Our language, both verbal and non-verbal speaks a great deal about us. And worry, which often produces anxie-ty, is wasted energy and time. Jesus’ words in-dicate he does not deny that we have troubles; we certainly do, but he urges us not to worry or fret. Live life day to day (or to use our language – run to run). Each fire was different in some aspects and yet we handled them. Each day is a new opportunity. We travel the journey of life not only with God but with each other. Be blessed and see you at the meeting.

Bernie Cattrell has resigned his position as treasurer due to family health issues. If any are willing to take over or have the name of someone to take over the treasurer’s position, please con-tact a board member. Gary Wells has been a trustee for the past year. He took over Bill Hanf’s position. Bill Hanf took over as Sergeant at Arms. To keep our election of officers schedule correct, Gary will have to be reelected for a three year term. The trustee posi-tion is the only one to be replaced this year. Gary Wells was nominated as a candidate for the posi-tion, seconded and passed. Election will be at the June meeting. Healthcare Information. As of the last OP&F meeting, I can’t see how we can claim the $3,000 tax deduction unless the healthcare is paid out though the pension. This should be clarified. OP&F has requested a ruling on this from the IRS and the Treasury Department. A report on the OP&F Pension Fund for April 2018 was read. Included was mention of the UHC prescription drug list changes effective on July 1. These in-clude 1 up-tier, 1 down-tier, 10 new tier place-ments of previously excluded drugs and 7 new exclusions. Any member that is affected by the upcoming changes will receive a letter 30 to 60 days prior to the effective date. Work will begin on new rosters. THE NEW ALPHABET A is for apple, and B is for boat, That used to be right, but now it won’t float! Age before beauty is what we once said, But let’s be a bit more realistic in-stead. Now this is the new alphabet! A is for Arthritis; B is the bad back, C the chest pains, perhaps car-di-ac? D is for dental decay and decline, E is for eyesight, can’t read that top line! F is for farting and fluid retention, G is for gut droop, which I’d rather not mention. H is high blood pressure—I’d rather it low. I is for incisions with scars you can show. J is for joints, out of socket won’t bend. K is for knees that crack when they bend. L is for libido, what happened to sex? M is for memory, I forget what comes next. N is for neuralgia, in nerves way down low! O is for osteo, bones that don’t grow! P is for prescriptions, I have quite a few, just give me a pill and I’ll be good as new! Q is for queasy, is it fatal or flu? R is for reflux, one meal turns to two. S is for sleepless nights, counting my fears.

Fire Museum Gets New Door, Fresh Coat of Paint

Top Photo: Workers from Jones Lumber put one of the large door panels in place. Bottom Photo: Sporting a new coat of paint, the doors look good as new.

In April of 2017, a car crashed through a front bay door of the Fire Museum, through the gift shop and into several displays. Total dam-age exceeded $50,000 with the mahogany bay door costing over $30,000. The bay door has been replaced, along with all of the gift shop cases and damaged merchandise. The new door was freshly painted and creat-

ed a stark contrast to the other two bay doors which were badly faded. A review of the main building revealed it was time to address repaint-ing the building exterior. So as of November, 2017 all bay and barn doors have been repainted, including the exterior goose neck lights and hay-loft doors. When you go by, please notice the fresh ap-pearance of your Fire Museum.
