when Jones set the tone with a number about flatulence, my first thought was, “Better get some boots on…this BS is gonna get deep.” And it did. The subject matter ranged from Barlow’s songs about painting stripes on the highway and the anthropomorphic ditty about being the last match in a book of matches; to Porter’s song, “Mexi-can Lettuce” and Jones’ comeback, “Wetback Tobacco.” The common theme from these three creative minds was “groaner” jokes and songs with an unorthodox play on words. Porter was celebrating his birthday and 15th wed-ding anniversary (with wife Andrea in attendance) and delivered some beautiful romantic ballads in her behalf. Pound for pound, this was one very entertaining show with a lot of laughs…but I should have put my boots on.
DO NOT MISS LISTPonty Bone & the Squeezetones
Ponty Bone and the Squeezetones (Austin, TX) will play the Tarpon Ice House on the 4th of July. Transistor-dale will open the show! Katy bar the door! I guarantee this is where the party is on the 4th. Ponty Bone is a true Texas accordion king. His roots oriented music ranges from blues to polkas to Cajun waltzes and beyond. Orig-inally from San Antonio, Bone moved to my home town
of Lubbock in the early 70’s and replaced Lloyd Maines in the scalding hot Joe Ely Band. Maines played pedal steel and Bone is an accordionist but the transition was seamless. I remember going to many, many Ely shows at the storied Cotton Club in Lubbock where history was made with Bone and the late great Jessie “Guitar” Tay-lor. Eventually the Ely entourage made the move from Hub City to Austin and eventually Ponty Bone stepped out front to form the Squeezetones with another Lub-bockite, R.C. Banks on guitar. (R.C. is still with Ponty today.) Also note, the Ice House is a pretty good vantage spot to watch the fireworks show over the harbor. I can’t think of a better place to celebrate the 4th of July than the Tarpon Ice House with Ponty Bone.
Mingo Fishtrap
Mingo Fishtrap (Austin, TX) will play the Back Porch on July 15th. The funky, funky boys from Austin will be back on the island with all their horns this time. They played the Porch last month as the scaled down Hi Defs without horns, but this gig with the entire eight piece band will be super charged. The band originally formed in the mid 90’s in the Jazz Studies program at the Uni-versity of North Texas in Denton under the leadership of guitarist and vocalist Roger Blevins. The name Min-

Three Chords and the Truth
Happy 4th of July everybody! The only thing hotter than the relent-less heat on this island is the fab-ulous live music surrounding us. I’ve seen a bunch of great shows lately. I especially enjoyed recent perfor-mances by Mike Milligan and the Altar Boys, black-topGYPSY, The Tejas Brothers and Tommy Alverson at the Back Porch. Look for more stellar shows there in the coming weeks by Mingo Fishtrap, Augie Meyers, Gary P. Nunn, Larry Joe Taylor, Max Stalling, W. C. Clark and Clay McClinton (that would be Delbert’s son). The Joe King Carrasco show at the Porch was off the charts…I’ll review it here. Also, the Tarpon Ice House has had it going on as well. The BS and Ballads show was a hoot and I’ll tell you about that, too…plus the Ice House will be having Ponty Bone, Larry Martin Sweeney and Gasoline Alley in the coming weeks. And don’t forget about the Charlie Robison Bay Bash on July 3rd in Rockport. That lineup includes Kevin Fowler, Sean McConnell, Turnpike Troubadours and Jessie Jennings. One more thing, the Texas Tornadoes will be playing after the Hook’s baseball game at Whataburger Field on July 9th. This is all good stuff. But, right now times a wasting…let’s roll!
Joe King Carrasco & the Crowns
Joe King Carrasco and the Crowns (Puerto Vallarta, Mexico) played the Back Porch on June 18th. This was one rockin’ show! For this Texas tour Joe assembled the original members of the Crowns from 1980 with Kris
Cummins (organ), Brad Kizer (bass) and Mike Navar-ro (drums) and revisited the era of Nuevo Wavo.
I worked on 6th Street in Austin during the era when Joe King was the hottest ticket around and Raul’s was the happening venue for “new wave” and punk. Hard to believe that was 31 years ago. Back then, Joe King had made it to regular rotation on MTV and often played to audiences in the thousands. I remember watching him take a stage dive into a sea of people at Austin’s Audito-rium Shores and “body surf” on outstretched hands all the way to Barton Springs Road and back. Everyone was hopping up and down in unison to that big organ driven sound that Joe King emulated from Question Mark and the Mysterious (Ninety Six Tears). Fact be known, this is the Vox/Farfisa organ beat Augie Meyers had been playing with Doug Sahm since the 60’s as they pio-neered the Tex-Mex rock and roll sound.
This show at the Porch was definitely a throwback to 1980. Joe King, adorned with his trademark crown and cape…and guitar a blazin’, jumped up on every table in the house with the agility and fervor of a man half his age. A turban clad Joe Nick Patoski (Texas journalist and nov-elist) was on hand to introduce the band and lend a gener-al Austin weirdness to the air. The band played songs like Party Weekend, Bad Rap, Rock Esta Noche and Buena and had the crowd just as frenzied as any Raul’s patron three decades ago. Like I said, this was one rockin’ show.
Bo Porter, Al Barlow & Jimmy Lee Jones
Bo Porter (Austin, TX), Al Barlow (New Braunsfel, TX) and Jimmy Lee Jones (Comfort, TX) played the Tarpon Ice House on June 26th. Billed as “BS and Bal-lads,” this show certainly lived up to its name. These three artists from the Texas Hill Country are all accom-plished singer-songwriters who first premiered this “R” rated song swap at Gruene Hall. It was such a hit there they decided to take it on the road. From the downbeat,

go Fishtrap was actually the name of two intersecting streets in Denton. Look for all your funky favorites best described as “a sound dancing between gutbucket soul, N’awlins grit-down funk, and horn fueled Motown pop.” They have seven CD’s out. The band covers all kinds of funky tunes by the likes of Tower of Power, Donny Ha-thaway, The Neville Brothers, Otis Redding and Ma-ceo Parker as well as their top notched funk originals. This will be one high energy night to shine on the dance floor and is definitely on my DO NOT MISS LIST.
Augie Meyers
Augie Meyers (Bulverde, TX) will play the Back Porch on July 16th. Augie is truly a Texas legend. He was the big Vox organ sound behind Doug Sahm and the Sir Douglas Quintet (the first American band to invade the British music scene). His song, Hey Baby Que Paso is the “National Anthem” of San Antonio. He has toured the world with John Hammond, recorded with Bob Dylan, and was one of the founding members of the Texas Tornadoes along with Sahm, Freddy Fender and Flaco Jimenez. To date he has 13 solo recordings. Bob
Dylan called Meyers, a “master of syncopa-tion and timing.” Suffice it to say… whether on the organ, guitar or piano key accordion…Augie Meyers is THE man. I spoke to him on the phone this week and he’s been on a dead run with the current version of the Texas Tor-nadoes (featuring Doug Sahm’s son Shawn Sahm); recently playing two weeks in Eu-rope followed by a week on the West Coast. He’ll be bringing his San Antonio batos with him for the Porch gig, including the original bass player of the Sir Douglas Quintet, Jack
Barber; plus Footsie (drums), Mike Ellis (guitar) and Don Bierstead (pedal steel). You’d be crazy to miss this show!
And that’s the truth!
