Here we go. There’s a lot to tell you about. Let’s roll…
Texas RenegadeThe surprise of the week goes to Texas
Renegade (Austin, TX). They played the Back Porch on the Thursday before Memorial Day. By the sound of their name, I figured they were another boot scootin’ hat act but they weren’t. What they were are five young guys from Austin who played the bejessus out of their guitars and sang with conviction. These boys were having a great time up there and the music was big and full. Their songs were good, their music was good. Made you want to dance. Let’s hope they’ll be back again this season.
My Memorial Day weekend revisted…I spent a good deal of my holiday weekend
in Rockport at the Festival of Food and Wine. It was a fund raiser for the Texas Maritime Museum and was a lot of fun. They had tons of stuff going on: wine and beer tastings, food
demonstrations, lots of local cuisine and crafts and three bands playing each day. On Friday I saw Another Level (Corpus Christi, TX), Aqua Vox (Port A, TX) and Carolyn Wonderland (Austin, TX). On Saturday I caught Carol Elliott (Port A, TX) and some of Bo Porter’s (Austin, TX) show. I missed the Larry Joe Taylor show but heard it was good. Miss Wonderland was amazing. That’s one powerful woman. She wailed and wailed hard playing guitar, lap steel and trumpet. Her voice is like a force. We didn’t get to hear any whistling,
though… she’s an incredible whistler. Aqua Vox’s debut was good. L. Leon Sands, Woodie Lawson, Andrew Blankenship and Carol Elliott put on a good show. It was a trip back to the 60’s and 70’s… Hollies, Beatles, Dick Dale, Safaris. They rocked pretty darn good for their first time out! Aqua Vox will be playing again on this Friday the 8th at the Sunset Sounds show on the Patsy Jones stage at Roberts Point Park in Port A. Bo Porter sounded great as always. He’s been playing a lot lately and moving around a lot… Gruene Hall, Hondo’s, Luchenback, Switzerland… He had his great band with him: Gary Delz on drums and Huck
Johnson on stand-up bass and Chris Reeves on guitar. They had a lot of road dust on them. Also, during the weekend, I caught Gary P. Nunn (Austin, TX) at the Porch and Jul and the Chrome Wheels (Austin, TX) at the Tarpon Ice House. Jul and the Chrome Wheels was great. What a voice on that gal! Strong! Gary P. sang all his hits to a packed house. It was a fun night! I even made a couple of the late night Flat’s shows on my way home. Ray T was rockin’ hard all weekend and Goodnight Avenue played one of the nights. It was cool
seeing Ray there on Sunday. Throw in Sunday’s jam at the Ice House and I count 10 good bands I saw over the weekend. Sad really.
DO NOT MISS LIST
Derailers @ Porch/ Two Tons @ Surf Club/ Charlie Robison @ Brewster
This coming weekend has even more going on. On Saturday, June 2nd the Derailers (Austin, TX) will be at the Back Porch. This is pure Austin honky tonk and has grown to be an institution. If you’ve never been to a Derailers show at the Broken Spoke then your life is lacking. Also on Saturday, Brad Lomax and the guys over at Executive Surf Club compound (Water Street Market: restaurant, record store, surf museum, etc) are having their annual South Texas Walk of Fame Music and Art Festival. Their lineup is great on many levels. You have conjunto (Mingo Saldivar “The Singing Cowboy”), jazz (The Caceres Brothers, latin jazz (Latin Talk), great Texas roadhouse (Two Tons of Steel), singer songwriter (Karen Abrahams) and hot rod rocker (Matt Hole). There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9:00 a.m. And, while we’re here on Saturday, the 2nd, I want to throw in that the great Charlie Robison and Casey Donahew are at Brewster. This is all good stuff… tuck and roll, there’s too much to choose from.
The Rockport Music Festival is finally here!!!
And on the following weekend (June 7-10) there are even MORE shows! On Thursday the Rockport Music Festival kicks off with Delbert McClinton (Ft. Worth, TX) and Toni Price (Austin, TX). Then on Friday its Rodney Crowell (Nashville, TN) and Hayes
Carll (Austin, TX). The festival opens at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday with Austin icons Greezy Wheels (actually all these people are from Austin except Tracy Nelson and Los Lobos) then proceeds to the RMF All Stars (Derek O’Brien, David Grissom, Chris Layton) at 3:00 p.m, The Blues Broads featuring Tracy Nelson and Angela Strehlil at 5:00, Marcia Ball at 7:00 and finally Los Lobos (East L.A.) at 9:00 p.m. There are General Admission tickets still available for all three days, prepaid only for $20 and there are “non-member VIP” passes available at $400 for the three day pass (pricey but worth it). There will be a stage set up in the General Admission area this year with local acts: Hilda Lamas, Texas Toast, Sam & the Some Beaches, Statesboro Revue and Josh Weathers. I’ve written detailed previews of this festival in previous columns and it can be accessed online on the The Island Moon Newspaper and CC Magazine’s Facebook pages.
It just gets better and better…The Back Porch lineup for next weekend is
strong. On Thursday the 7th they have Emory Quinn (San Antonio, TX), Greezy Wheels (It ain’t easy being greezy!) on Friday and Jesse Dayton (Austin, TX) on Saturday. That’s a great lineup. If you’ve been paying attention, you will notice that Greezy Wheels is playing Friday in Port A and Saturday in Rockport. How cool is that? If you are an old Austin hippy, there is simply no excuse for not catching them somewhere along the weekend. It’s Greezy Wheels for goodness sake!. Albert and Gage (Austin, TX) will play Third Coast Theater on Saturday June 9. That’s as in Christine Albert and Chris Gage… they are great folk artists from Austin old school and Kerrville favorites. On the near horizon, on June 15th, Pat Green plays the big Texas Game Warden Fishing Tournament in Port A, on June 16th, Terri Hendrix, Lloyd Maines and Jack Saunders is at House of Rock and Houston Marchman is at the Porch. More on those shows later. All of these shows are undeniably DO NOT MISS LIST shows. Trust me on this.
Man, that was a lot of stuff… I’m dizzy. Be safe out there!
And that’s the truth!
