Throw in the late night shows at the Back Porch each night and it adds up to be the best three days of live music I can remember in a long while. I commend Capt. Tommy Moore for his efforts in putting on this first class festival. I’ll tell you all about it, let’s roll… Rockport Music Festival revisited… Me and my fellow Moon Monkeys saddled up and headed for Rockport last Thursday to see Toni Price (Austin, TX) and Delbert McClinton (Ft. Worth, TX) play. Jan was beside herself. She and Dale have logged some serious Tuesday Hippy Hours at the Continental Club in Austin where Toni Price has played for the past 16 years and Jan absolutely adores her. Myself, I was there for Delbert. He’s the man! I mean the Beatles used to open for him for Christ’s sakes. As far as I’m concerned, he’s cooler than Tony Bennett. Toni Price gets the party going… The ferry lines were horrible all weekend; Shrimporee was going on in Aransas Pass plus the number of tourists from San Antonio and Austin coming to Port A for the weekend was massive. When we finally did get to Rockport, Toni Price had already started and we could hear her singing, Tumbleweed, as we walked up. It was a heavenly sound. The Thursday night show was the private kick-off party and featured an open bar and free dinner in the VIP area. This, combined with being able to sit at tables with waitresses at our disposal, made it the most comfortable music festival I’ve ever been to. The surprise of the week… The “Surprise Band of the Week” goes to Josh Weathers (Ft. Worth, TX) who played the Budweiser Stage while Delbert’s band was setting up on the main stage. When Weathers started playing, our jaws dropped. This guy had a voice strong enough to blow you hair back at a hundred paces. It was HIGH energy R&B with the sweetest, strongest voice you’ve ever hear. I kept hearing how he stole the show all weekend… no easy task with Delbert McClinton and Toni Price on the bill. Susan Powell, are you catching this? Delbert the cougar magnet… When Delbert finally took the stage, the cougar hotties flocked to the front in mass… and Delbert played them like only Delbert can. He ran through his songbook of hits: Shotgun Rider, Back to Louisiana, B-Movie, Two More Bottle of Wine, etc and thoroughly worked the crowd into a frenzy. He’s simply the best. We got back to Port A and to find a packed Back Porch and just in time to catch Emory Quinn (San Antonio, TX) who was on fire. Those guys get better every time I see them. Rodney Crowell and Hayes Carll… The next night, on Friday, my photographer buddy, Miles and I got back to Rockport about half way through the Hayes Carll’s (Houston, TX) set. I’d been hearing good things about this young man and was glad to finally see him. No doubt about it, this kid is good. He’s got a rockin’ delivery and some really nice songs. I really liked his “Bad Liver and a Broken Heart”. Up next was a real hero of mine, “The Houston Kid”, Rodney Crowell (Nashville, TN). I had only seen him one time back in the late 80’s at Slim’s in San Francisco, but have followed his career closely ever sense. I think he’s a rare talent. Unfortunately, he’d been on the road for a while and had been fighting off laryngitis and was not in good voice He gave it his best shot but relied heavily on his young guitar monster from Australia, Jedd Hughes, to fill in most of the blanks and even sing a couple of songs. It ain’t easy being Greezy… After Crowell, we made it back to Port A in time to catch Greezy Wheel’s (Austin, TX) last set at the Porch. I’ve loved Greezy Wheels since I first heard them at the Armadillo World Headquarters in the early 70’s. When they broke into Old Joe Clark, my hair stood straight up. These guys are truly a Texas treasure and the sweetest people on the planet. A Storyville reunion… The next day, I headed back to Rockport with Mr. Mo for the big Saturday finale. It took forever to get across the ferry but we were able to catch the end of the “RMF All Star’s” set. This was David Grissom, Malford Milligan, Derek O’Brien and Larry Fulcher… all from Austin. Grissom and Milligan were once in the band, Storyville, and played a few of their hits (Bluest Eyes, Good Day for the Blues, etc). It was great to see Derek; I’ve known him since he played with the Cobras in the 70’s. I could spend considerable time talking about these players. The Blues Broads blew us away… Next up was the Blues Broads. This was four ladies with impressive pedigree: Tracy Nelson, Angela Strehli, Annie Sampson and Dorothy Morrison. By far, and including Los Lobos, this was the most powerful act of the festival. I have a personal connection here. I was Tracy’s booking agent for a year or so and have know Angela since the mid 70’s when we were both part of the Antone’s family. Both of those ladies are blues singers of distinction. Dorothy Morrison comes from a gospel background and wrote the famous gospel song, Oh Happy Days. The highlight of the show is when Morrison cut loose with a couple of HIGH energy gospel numbers and got the entire festival on its feet. The power coming off of that stage was somewhere between a hurricane and nuclear fission. And, when they brought Marcia Ball up to sing a couple, the energy went OFF THE CHARTS. I don’t think I’ve ever been witness to such an amazing performance by five female vocalists. It left me speechless. Marcia Ball and Los Lobos… After the Blues Broads, Marcia Ball (Austin, TX) took the stage and played her patient set of Louisiana meets Texas roadhouse. Amazingly enough, I met a lot of people that had never heard Miss Ball before and were impressed for the first time. She really is a wonderful performer and a lovely lady. After Marcia, Los Lobos took their sweet time setting up which made for about an hour and a half of Hilda Lamas (Corpus Christi, TX). We had just about decided to split back to Port A when Los Lobos finally did start playing. It was classic Lobo (Evangeline, I Got Loaded, etc) but we were spent and ready to get back. I’m telling you; those Blues Broads really took it out of us. Zombie Rocker, Jesse Dayton at the Porch… We made it back to the Back Porch just in time to catch my favorite zombie rocker, the bastard son of George Jones and the pride of the Golden Triangle, Jesse Dayton (Austin, TX). I’ve know Jesse for years and used to bounce his son on my knee back at the old Antone’s Records office circa 1995. We met later at the Flat’s for drinks and to catch up. He’s just finished making a new zombie move called Zombex which will be out soon. It was a great, wild, long weekend. On Sunday, we went sailing with Capt. Chester and Vickie and licked our wounds. My life really doesn’t ever slow down very much. Oh well, I’ll sleep when I’m dead I suppose. No regrets… DO NOT MISS LIST I want to briefly mention a couple of great shows that you surely do not want to miss. The great Pat Green will be playing at the Texas Game Wardens Fishing Tournament this Saturday, June 16 th at Roberts Point Park in Port A. Cody Johnson will open the show at 6:30, followed by the Turnpike Troubadours at 8:30. Green goes on at 10:30. Admission is $15. Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines will be bringing their most excellent show to the House of Rock also on Saturday, June 16 th . This is a musical experience you definitely DO NOT WANT TO MISS. Jack Saunders will be opening that show. Also, the Queen of Rockabilly, none other than Wanda Jackson will be performing a rare performance at the House of Rock on Friday, June 22 nd . And finally, Joe King Carrasco will be at the Back Porch on June 23. This is all good stuff. And that’s the truth! Rockport Music Festival revisited…
