The Zeal for your house will consume me

All of us wish we could be holy, we say, if only Jesus would come and do to the temple of our faith what he did to the temple of Israel’s faith: cast out what doesn’t belong, because we don’t seem to be able to do it for ourselves, at least not with much effectiveness. We try to pray and find ourselves daydreaming about what to make for supper, about the latest family argument, about the meeting we’re going to attend, about where we’re going to spend our money.

We try to simplify, but we also like our lives the way they are. We like the cut of style, the thick of our lawn, the escape of vacation, the high from shopping or chocolate or daytime soaps or whatever catches our fancy. We wish we would love better, care better, have more compassion or patience, be more generous, but original sin always gets in the way—only we don’t call it original sin. We say we don’t have willpower or the energy.

So what are we to do? John’s Gospel promises that God will come and drive such stuff from our lives. In fact, the promise is that God will do it whether we wish God to or not, which is probably a good move on God’s part simply because most of us are a bit fearful of what God may clear away.

La reapertura de la Santa Misa

Todos nosotros deseamos ser santos o santas y decimos con un suspiro que ojalá Jesús viniera para hacer con el templo de nuestra fe lo mismo que hizo con el templo de Israel: echar afuera todo aquello que no debe estar ahí, ya que no parece que nosotros podamos hacerlo solos, al menos no con mucha efectividad. Tratamos de rezar y nuestra mente divaga hacia lo que vamos a hacer para la cena o hacia la última discusión en la familia, a la reunión que vamos a ir, o cómo vamos a gastar nuestro dinero. Tratamos de simplificar las cosas, pero a la vez queremos que nuestra vida siga como está. Nos gusta el corte de pelo que está de moda, nuestro césped de buena hierba, escaparnos a unas vacaciones, el gusto que nos da ir de compras o comer chocolate o ver las telenovelas o cualquier cosa que se nos antoje. Deseamos mejorar en la manera que amamos o que nos preocupamos por los demás, tener más compasión o paciencia, ser más generosos, pero el pecado original lo obstaculiza todo —lo único es que no lo llamamos pecado original. Más bien decimos que nos falta la fuerza de voluntad o la energía. ¿Qué hacer entonces? El Evangelio de Juan promete que Dios vendrá a echar afuera todas esas cosas de nuestra vida. De hecho, la promesa es que Dios lo hará, queramos nosotros que lo haga o no, lo cual es una buena decisión por parte de Dios sencillamente porque a la mayoría de nosotros nos da un poco de medio pensar en lo que Dios va a extirpar de nuestra vida. —Padre Joseph J. RREEFFLLEEXXIIOONNEEMMOOSS SSOOBBRREE LLAA PPAALLAABBRRAA DDEE DDIIOOSS . . . escándalo para los judíos y locura para los gentiles. (1 Corintios 1:23) Pam estaba lista para comprar una mesa vieja en un mercado de pulgas cuando un hombre le dijo que no era resistente y que no resistiría. Si bien esto presentó un obstáculo, Pam lo compró de todos modos. En 1975, un amigo le contó a Jim sobre una nueva empresa de software en la que estaba pensando invertir. Convencido de que era un fracaso, el padre de Jim calificó la inversión como una tonta pérdida de dinero, pero Jim no escuchó. Continuó y compró algunas acciones. Años más tarde, Pam hizo tasar su mesa y descubrió que era una valiosa antigüedad que valía cincuenta mil dólares. La inversión de Jim en una empresa poco conocida llamada Microsoft se había multiplicado una y otra vez y había convertido a Jim en una buena suma de dinero. ¿Una piedra de tropiezo? ¿Tontería? Quizás. Pero estas son las mismas palabras que usó San Pablo para describir el mensaje del evangelio. La imagen de un Mesías crucificado fue una piedra de tropiezo para los judíos. La vida y la muerte de Jesús no coincidían con la forma en que esperaban que Dios los salvara. Del mismo modo, los griegos filosóficos no pudieron comprender la explicación de la salvación de Pablo. Para ellos, no era más que una historia extraña e inventada. Sin embargo, algunos judíos y griegos aceptaron las palabras de Pablo, creyeron en Jesús y le dieron la vida. ¿Y el mensaje único que formó el fundamento de la fe que proclamaron? ¡El mensaje de un Mesías crucificado y resucitado! Dos mil años después, este mismo Jesús está en el centro de nuestra fe. Este evangelio "insensato" nos une cada domingo. ¡Y cuán bendecidos somos de creer en tal "locura"! Tenemos un Dios que nos ama tan completamente que dio su vida por nosotros. Al recibir a Jesús en la Eucaristía hoy, dejemos que la "locura" de ese mensaje penetre más profundamente en nuestros corazones. Reflecting on God’s Word

. . a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. (1 Corinthians 1:23) Pam was ready to buy an old table at a flea market when a man told her that it wasn’t sturdy and would not hold up. While this presented a stumbling block, Pam bought it anyway. In 1975, a friend told Jim about a new software company that he was thinking of investing in. Convinced it was a failure, Jim’s dad called the investment a foolish waste of money, but Jim didn’t listen. He went ahead and bought some shares of the stock. Years later, Pam had her table appraised and discovered that it was a valuable antique worth fifty thousand dollars. Jim’s investment in a little-known company called Microsoft had multiplied over and over again and made Jim a healthy sum of money. A stumbling block? Foolishness? Perhaps. But these are the same words that St. Paul used in describing the gospel message. The image of a crucified Messiah was a stumbling block to Jews. Jesus’ life and death did not match up with the way they had expected God to save them. Likewise, the philosophical Greeks could not fathom Paul’s explanation of salvation. To them, it was nothing more than an odd, made-up story. Still, a few Jews and Greeks accepted Paul’s words, believed in Jesus, and gave their lives to him. And the one unique message that formed the foundation of the faith that they proclaimed? The message of a crucified and risen Messiah! Two thousand years later, this same Jesus is at the center of our faith. This “foolish” gospel draws us together each Sunday. And how blessed we are to believe in such “folly”! We have a God who loves us so completely that he laid down his life for us. As we receive Jesus in the Eucharist today, let’s allow the “folly” of that message to sink deeper into our hearts.
