THE WIND AND THE SEA

Living along the shores of Lake Superior—the “big lake,” as the locals call it—you can often hear the advice, “Respect the lake; don’t take it for granted.” People who know Lake Superior respect its power and watch out for its many moods. Sunken ships and boats crushed into kindling are testimonies to what the lake can do.

The readings of this Sunday evoke our memories of the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean itself. Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to their advance? The lake described in today’s Gospel was a body of water subject to sudden storms and churned into dangerous waves by terrible winds.

But these mighty agents are subject to God. The sailor and the fisher all respect the water. Even more, they respect the awesome power of the Maker of wind and sea.

Infant Baptism

The baptism of a newborn child is important and essential for a Latino family. Saint Luke writes in the Acts of the Apostles that entire families were baptized when the mother or the father of the family decided they should become Christians. Saint Paul baptized Lydia, the jailer, and Crispus (Acts 16:15, 27–33; 18:8) with everyone in their homes. The “entire household” indicated the family made up of sons, daughters, relatives, and slaves who normally lived together. In these cases, Lydia was the mother or mistress of a house and the jailer and Crispus were the father and head of their houses. For the first Christians, it was inconceivable that the father and the mother be baptized and not the rest of the members of the house. Salvation is shared in a family. In time, the practice of baptizing not only the new believer but also the spouse and children changed to baptizing the children of already baptized believers. But the tradition of baptizing infants was always more than a social act or a cultural tradition. Infant baptism was transformed through the centuries into a very important rite in the formation of the new Christian. The children are dressed in white clothes to remind us of the presence of Christ in their souls, they are given a candle that invites them to shine with the light of Christ, and they are anointed with holy oil that indicates that as sons and daughters of God they are called to be priest, prophet, and king. They are given godparents who will teach them to live in Christ. Parents need to be sure that they select godparents because of their Christian conduct and not because of their bank account.

No necesariamente.

Reflecting on God’s Word Who shut within doors the sea . . . and said: Thus far shall you come but no farther! (Job 38:1, 11)

If you’ve ever been to a beach, you’ve probably seen children trying to build sand castles near the shoreline. They work hard piling up buckets of sand, sometimes making quite an impressive structure. But no matter what they do, the tide still comes in and their sandy structure is washed away.

That might be how the disciples felt as they tried to ride out the storm in today’s Gospel. Seasoned fishermen, they tried to adapt to the strong winds and high seas. But no matter what they did, they couldn’t make the storm go away. Then something drastically changed their situation: the One who “shut within doors the sea”—Jesus—rebuked the wind and calmed the storm (Job 38:1; Mark 4:39).

The disciples learned a lesson that day similar to the one God taught Job. When we rely only on our own strength or understanding, we human beings can do only so much, but Jesus’ power is limitless.

While Jesus does have dominion over all creation, that doesn’t have to make us feel unimportant and it doesn’t have to make God seem like an indifferent almighty force. Instead, this reality should give us hope. Why? Because in the storms of our lives, when the “seas” seem out of control and our insufficiency is painfully clear, he is in the boat with us! He is not aloof; he cares for each one of us. He is concerned about every one of our circumstances.

Does that mean every storm we face will be calmed? Not necessarily. Sometimes Jesus calms the storms and sometimes he calms us. Either way, we can rely on the fact that this all-powerful God is right there “in the boat” with us. And that can give us peace and help us through the hard times.

From the Word among us-June-2021
