    Lesson Plan

    Title: under the sea

    Grade:2nd

    grade

Curricular Goal: The second graders will design under the sea environments based off the work of

Amado Pena and Robert Schott. They will create five imaginary fish and design a scene that they live in.

Each scene will have five fish and a sunken ship surrounded by coral, seaweed, and sand. This will

portray what it would look like to live under the sea.

    National Standards:

1.1Use a variety of art materials and techniques to express original ideas.1.3Use materials, techniques, processes, and tools, for the creation and exhibition of works of art in a

    safe and responsible manner.

3.4 Explore and recognize use of symbols, subject matter, ideas in own art work and the work of others.

3.5 Apply grade level academic vocabulary: subject matter, line, shape, color, unity, symbols, pattern,

    rhythm, emphasis, and landscape.

    Targeted Standards:

The students will be able to compare and contrast realistic and imaginary styles in artwork

showing natural and imaginary environments. They will be able to create a composition with a

scene describing what it looks like under the sea. They will understand what shapes and lines

are used to draw animals and plants that live under the sea. They will also understand how to

use creative thinking to create something that exists and turn it into a fish, such as a bird fish, a

fish with wings. They will also use images of a sunken ship and plant life to draw their own.

    Project:

    The students will

    create under the

    sea environments

    full of imaginary

    fish. Each fish

must be created inthe students mind,

    but have the

    qualities of living in

    the ocean.

    Did not create fish

    that had qualities of

    living under the sea.

    Completed some

    fish with correct

    qualities and

    created a correct

    background.

    Completed all of the

    fish correctly and

    gave those very

    unique attributes as

    well as a unique

    background.

    Completed an

    outstanding

    background as well

    as exceptional fish.

    Identify:

    Will be able to

    identify

    characteristics that

    make a fish

    imaginary and

    what makes it real.

    Shapes, lines, and

    features.

    Could not

    distinguish what

    each fish was and

    what their features

    were.

    Difficult to see

    detailed features

    in some of the

    fish.

    Could distinguish

    each fish and what

    their features

    were.

    Outstanding

    detailed fish and

    could distinguish

    how each fish was

    imaginary.

    Create:

    Will create an

    under the sea

    environment filled

    with imaginary fish.

    Did not create

    correct amount of

    fish and lacked on

    detail.

    Background was

    finished, but

    lacked in details as

    well as completed

    fish.

    Completed a

    detailed

    background, and

    could distinguish

    features of fish.

    Outstanding

    background and

    fantastic

    imaginary fish.

    Overall:

    Their work will

    include a under the

    sea background

    with uniquely

    designed fish.

    Craftsmanship

    was very poor.

    Could have done a

    better job by

    including more

    details and

    creativity.

    Completed

    environment

    background and

    detailed fish.

    Excellent

    background with

    outstanding

    imaginative fish.
