15. Assessment Questions
I. Title: Take a Class Survey
II. Problem: Are traits controlled by dominant alleles more common than those controlled by recessive alleles?
III. Materials: mirror (optional), PTC paper
IV. Procedure:
1. First you draw the data table without numbers. 2. Then you start with the first trait and you check the ones you have. Whether each
trait is dominant or recessive. 3. Last you compile all the class’s data and count each trait per student.
V. Data:
Dominant Trait # of Students Recessive Trait # of Students Widow's Peak 8 No Widow's Peak 15 Free Earlobes 14 Attached Earlobes 9
Cleft Chin 8 Smooth Chin 15 Curly Hair 10 Straight Hair 13 Dimples 14 No Dimples 9
Hand Clasping Left Thumb 13 Hand Clasping
Right Thumb 10
Can Roll Tongue 19 Can't Roll Tongue 4
Taste PTC Paper 18 Can't Taste PTC
Paper 5
Freckles 10 No Freckles 13 Right
Handedness 21 Left Handedness 2
VI. Analyze and Conclude:
1. Did more students have the dominant traits or the recessive traits? More students had the dominant traits
2. What do the results suggest about the frequency with which certain traits show up in a population? Some are more likely to be more recessive than dominant.
3. Obtain results from numbers of your family. Are there more similarities of differences? Explain? There are more similarities because there are only 5 people in my family and we are alike in many ways.
