The test has been quite hard but we were able to get through it. In English we have been planning our own stories about courage, like the story of Abikanile in ‘The Village That Vanished’, which we have been reading in class. On Thursday, we celebrated ‘Red Nose Day’ having a great me! We had some sweets for snack me, and wore our own clothes to school – we had to wear something red, like socks! And we brought in 50p to donate to Comic Relief. All in all we have had an excing week, packed full of fun and challenging things. 24/03/2017 Kelvin grove Newsletter Issue: 16/17 92 DIARY HEADTEACHER®S MESSAGE As I am sure you have read in the media, financial pressures on schools are becoming increasingly challenging. RED NOSE DAY

Page 2: 24/03/2017 Year 5 DIARY Kelvingrove Lavender Class Newsletterfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/... · 2017-03-24 · On Thursday, we celebrated ‘Red Nose

On Wednesday the whole of year 1 went on a trip to the Horniman Museum to learn about animals. We visited the natural history area where we saw many bones and models of animals, some which are now extinct (like the Dodo!). We also went down to the aquarium where we saw jellyfish, coral and lots of colourful tropical fish. We then went into the robot zoo exhibition which had lots of robots and games to try and show how animals are adapted to their environments. We had a try at camouflaging ourselves like a chameleon! We had a great day and even the rain on the way home didn't dampen our spirits.

Year 1 - Amber Class

Land Ho!

Green Class have been enjoying being pirates again this week. We made pirate outfits and with telescopes went in search of

a class parrot, which we discovered perched on a window in the playground. Like all good pirates we have learnt some pirate songs which we sing with our pirate voices. In maths we have been counting stitches on our pirate scars and learning to use grid references to find treasure. When digging for jewels in sand we have also learnt about sharing - because good pirates share equally. With the Green Class crew all trained up - we just need a ship. Then to the high seas!

Rainbow - Green Class

Nursery have been nature detectives this week. We have been learning about different mini-beasts and went on a mini-beast hunt in the outdoor area. We have been closely observing our class caterpillars and impressed the adults by talking about how the caterpillars have changed. We were amazed when we saw the caterpillars go into their cocoons. We also made ladybirds out of paper plates. Next week are going to be learning about Easter and will be doing an Easter egg hunt.

Year 2 - Saffron Class

Reception - Cerise Class

In science we went to forest school to look for minibeasts in their microhabitats and tried to identify them. Dheeran found leaves that had been chewed and guessed that it may have been a caterpillar’s work. Laia found so many woodlice under a log that she decided to record ‘countless’ in her table, rather than count them all. Boyan discovered an abandoned spider’s web in a muddy, grassy area under a tree. Jathushan spotted a small, grey slug tucked inside a damp hole in a log and Elson noticed three worms buried in a patch of earth. With Mrs Hewitt’s help, we discussed why each minibeast had chosen to live in the microhabitat where we found it.

Well done to everyone in cerise class who has returned their grass heads having looked after them at home. The children all remembered to water and place them in a sunny spot! It has been great to see the completed diaries with drawn pictures, photos and even the cut grass stuck into one; what a great idea!

Can we also take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all our parents, who have supported their children in making this home /school link such great success! A special certificate is on the way!

Year 3 - Jade Class This term we have been identifying the key features of a Greek soldier.

Greek soldiers were called a 'Hoplites' and were the backbone of the Greek army.

Hoplites were foot soldiers with large spears and used large round shields for protection.

In Jade class we have been making our own shield which would be used to intimidate the enemy.

We also wrote in role as a Greek soldier on the eve of battle.
