Dear Parents and Carers Well what a year! It certainly feels like we have done so much yet again since July 2014 and we have. The year has been full of many memorable events for me personally and the school as a whole. It will definitely be another year to note down as one to remember. It is just a shame that we are still waiting for the Ofsted call, but hopefully that will come sooner rather than later in the new school year so we can show them how great we are. Firstly, I would like to congratulate some special people on passing a very important year. Miss Yates has very successfully passed her NQT induction year and is now a fully- fledged teacher. Mr Rowland has passed his EM Direct teacher training and has successfully gained his first teaching position at Chaddesden Park Primary School. It is a shame that he has to leave Lawn as he has spent the last two years with us, one as a sports coach and the other training. Unfortunately we didn’t have a position for him, but I am sure he will have a super start to his career and we wish him all the luck and happiness in his new journey. I am sure they will both get lots of joy and pleasure out of such a rewarding career. Well done! As we get ready to say our goodbyes to our wonderful Year 6, I would like to say how proud I am of them, each and every one. They have been a wonderful year group throughout school even with their ups and downs over the years. Their SATs results were great but it is not just their academic success that needs to be noted. They are talented in so many ways, sporting, musical, creative and many more. The fun and laughter over the years, I can still remember many of them as 4 and 5 year olds playing happily in their FS2 class. Lawn is very proud of you and wish you all the success as you go onto your new secondary schools. I am already looking forward to my visit to Woodlands in the autumn term to visit them with Mr Brady and I hope to also visit the other secondary schools. The rest of our children have progressed so well this year too with a huge percentage of children making better than expected progress. Watch out for the data in September. I am proud of all of them and it shows what a fantastic team we are together. Last week we had a super transition day where your children spent the day with their new class teacher. There was a lovely buzz to the school and it was lovely to see our new FS2 children again. Just a reminder that from September it will be the new school uniform only that needs to be worn and don’t forget to send in your old uniform to be sent to Tanzania on Wednesday or Thursday next week. Over the summer holiday refurbishment work will be taking place at school. As promised last year, Governors and I are committed to replace the very out-dated toilets in the KS1 Smedley building. Over the summer the next phase of development will start in the Y1 classrooms. Issue 16 NEWSLETTER 17 th July 2015

Dear Parents and Carers

Well what a year!

Miss Yates has very successfully passed her NQT induction year and is now a fully-fledged teacher. Mr Rowland has passed his EM Direct teacher training and has successfully gained his first teaching position at Chaddesden Park Primary School. NEWSLETTER

17th July 2015

The toilets will be removed and refurbished like those in the FS2 classrooms last year. I am sure they will look fantastic and be a welcome addition to the classrooms. The final phase will be the Y2 toilets in 2016-17.

I have been asked by parents about where teaching assistants will be next year. I apologise for not giving more details but we have been finalising plans over the last couple of weeks. Next year the role of the teaching assistant will change slightly at Lawn with some of the staff being more involved in running interventions for those children who need extra help or need to be stretched further. Mrs Millington and Mrs Hill (maternity cover for Miss White) will be in FS2; Mrs Sowerby will be in Y1; Mrs Hathaway in Y2; Mrs Burton, Mr Fox, Mrs Smith in Y3 supporting SEND children; Mrs Brown and Mrs Cordwell in Y5 & 6 and Mrs Hutchinson continuing to deliver her interventions like this year. The TAs will also be running intervention groups with children in different year groups. Mrs O’Hare will continue be a full time learning mentor supporting our vulnerable children as she has this year.

A huge thankyou must go to the LSA for a fantastic evening at the Glitz and Glamour Ball at Kedleston Golf Club on Saturday evening. Unfortunately I was unable to attend this year at the last moment, which I apologise for as I was really looking forward to it. There was a great mix of staff, governors and parents and a large sum of money was raised over the evening. Thank you must go especially to the LSA for arranging it and also a thankyou to Matthew Millington, one of our dads, for agreeing to do the auction. I heard there were plenty of sore heads and feet the next day!

Well done to our Y5/6 athletics team who represented Lawn at Moorways stadium last Thursday at the Primary track and field games. They were a real credit to Lawn. Even though they didn’t win this year they came second overall, which is great. A special mention must go to Stanley Clarke for his running, it is a name we need to look out for in future years as he could be the next big star of athletics – well done Stanley. Fantastic, well done all that took part.

Plans are underway for the new way of assessing next year. As you may be aware and now that the Government is the same, levels are disappearing. As a school we decided this time last year to stay with the levels for the year due to other priorities in school. However, we are now aware that we need to change. In the autumn term we will be arranging meetings for parents to come into school to find out about how we will be assessing your child’s progress over the year. I know that this will come as a shock to some parents who have only just got used to levels, but we do need to change. We will ensure that we keep you as well informed as possible.

On the 1st July some of our staff went and said their goodbyes to one of Lawn’s Deputy Head teachers who sadly died after a period of illness. Margret Hambleton had been a teacher and Deputy Head here at Lawn for a very long time. She retired from teaching over ten years ago and I am sure that through the many years of teaching she will have touched the lives of so many children as they passed through Lawn and will be remembered by lots. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time.

You may have seen on several windows in the Smedley Hall, great pieces of art work and wondered who had done them. Mrs Creaghan, mum of Molly in Y6, has been a super volunteer offering us her artist skills over the last several years and has decorated the windows in the KS1 library several times. The Creaghan family are from Canada and will be making the move back to their hometown at the end of this week. As a school we wanted to wish them well and to thank Mrs Creaghan for all the time she has given to Lawn. Good luck, we will miss you all.

Finally, I wish you all a wonderful summer and hope that you manage to get lots of special family time together. Let's hope the sun continues to shine all through the six weeks. I am certainly ready for a rest and will hopefully be relaxing whilst exploring Scandinavia and Russia.

I look forward to seeing everyone back in September, in new uniform on Wednesday 9th September 2015 (Monday and Tuesday are Inset Days).

Architecture Workshop

On Monday 6th July, Year 6 (and a lucky group of selected KS2) children spent the day being architects! They all took part in an excellent workshop which involved them creating a

HUGE Tudor Globe Theatre in the Smedley Hall. It was so big, each class was able to fit

underneath!

The children had a fantastic time learning all about Tudor architecture and they listened

brilliantly to our expert - Bob. Hopefully it will inspire many of them to become architects in

the future!

Well done everyone! Mr Green

Y4A Brass concert

On Friday 3rd July Y4A performed their final brass concert of the year. With the majority of the class having had no previous experience of playing a brass instrument in September, the performance was a resounding success! All the children were able to play, sing, clap and click along to a variety of songs, with a few individual performances of the Eastenders theme tune thrown in for good measure! All the children have really enjoyed this fantastic experience and we would like to say a big thankyou to Mrs Wilde and Miss Collins for all their hard work!

Money Week

Money Week was an absolutely huge success this year; we were able to raise a huge amount of money, which will be used for a variety of different things. Each class has decided individually what they wanted to spend their profit on, and here is a few of the things your massive support has been able to provide:

Year 4, 5 and 6 clubbed their money

together to go on a trip to the Showcase

Cinema at Intu to watch Tomorrowland,

with the rest of their profit going to a

chosen charity.

Year 3 have given a portion of their

profit to the Dog’s Trust charity. They

are also using their hard earned cash to

create their own Cinema experience in

school and buy some brand new wet-

play activities.

Year 1 will be having a very

sophisticated Tea Party, and buying

some new Golden Time activities for all

the children to enjoy.

Year 2 will be turning their classrooms

into a cinema for the morning –

providing ice lollies and lots of popcorn.

They will also be buying some new

books for school and donating the rest

of their profit to RSPCA.

FS2 are making a donation to Water

Aid and buying some treats for the

children in the form of cakes and ice

cream to be eaten on their themed

castle day.

Sport Week

From the 29th of June to the 2nd of July our school took part in a sport week, letting us have a chance to do sports, which we hadn’t done before. Here are some of them: Ultimate Frisbee, Handball, Bangra Dancing and Dodgeball. As well as all the new sports, we took part in our traditional Sports Day event. Even though the weather wasn’t great, it was still a brilliant day – especially with the picnic in the afternoon! Furthermore, the parents came in on one afternoon to do some mini challenges which Andy and Jamie Murray did when they were younger. Overall, it was an amazing, fun experience for us all.

In June, Y6 went on an amazing trip to PGL.

Absolutely everyone really enjoyed

themselves!

Activities/Staff

Firstly, the activities were extremely fun

and enjoyable for both students and

teachers. Also, all of the activities needed

teamwork and strength to be completed.

Moreover, the staff were very energetic and

just kept encouraging you to keep on going.

Food Hall/ Facilities

The food was delightful to eat and was full

of options. The tables were nicely cleaned

and there were taps of water and juice.

There were taps all over the site which was

very helpful after activities.

The Rooms/ Playing Field

The bed was comfortable to lie on or sit on.

Some rooms had a big, spacious wardrobe

where you could store many things. The

bathroom was clean and had lots of space to

get changed in. Also, the showers were

warm and refreshing to have either at day

time or night time. The field was fun to run

around on and was fun to play football on.

We would like to say a big thank you to the

whole PGL team and to you for reading this

report.

By Olly.S and Olly.R from Y6G!

Lawn Values

We just wanted to say a big thank you and well done to the children and parents for embracing the Lawn Values this year. As you may be aware British Values (Lawn Values) have become of major importance within daily school life both on a personal level and through the learning they experience. Our own school values (voted by the School Council) enhance their understanding of the key areas of democracy, rule of, individual liberty, mutual respect and the tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Alongside this, teachers have worked incredibly hard organising outside agencies to come in and visits for the children to embrace and understand all of the above areas. Thank you to you as parents and carers for your increased support in ensuring Lawn Primary are able to confidently say we are preparing our children for a life in modern Britain. The first newsletter home (and hopefully a new section under construction on the website) will explain the Value for the month of September and how you can prepare and encourage your child for what will be expected of them at school.

Governors Corner As we come to the end of the school year, Governors have already started planning for 2015/16 as all Governors are completing a self evaluation of the Governing Board, a skills audit and a review of myself as Chair. This will enable us to plan for the next school year at our first meeting of the year (14th September) and complete a Governor action plan, review any skill gaps we have and agree training required. Governors have also created an email address for any safeguarding concerns that you need to contact a Governor about. This email address is [email protected] and replies will be within 2 working days. Urgent contact should be via the school office. Please refer to the Safeguarding Policy on www.lawn.derby.sch.uk on who you should contact with any concerns. Our year 6 pupils had a fantastic week at PGL and I understand behaviour was excellent. Governors would like to thank the staff that accompanied our children. PGL is something that Lawn choose to run and without staff being prepared to give up their time, it would not take place. PGL is a great way of helping pupils become secondary ready as it encourages skills such as independence and teamwork. Finally, I would just like to thank all the volunteers that help at Lawn. There are numerous volunteers: Governors, LSA members and parent helpers (and often other family members as I saw lots of LSA partners helping to set up for the summer fayre). I know all volunteers are so appreciated by School and provide support and help in many different ways. Thank you. Please contact the school office if you are interested in volunteering at Lawn. Kind regards

Over 3,000 retailers (including Amazon, M&S, Boden, Argos, Debenhams, Vodafone, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, EBay, Toys r Us, Next and many more..) will donate a percentage of what you spend when you shop with them, via fundraising website http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk. Instead of going directly to the retailer’s website, go to http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk FIRST - click on "I want to support a good cause" then select Lawn School Association (LSA) School PTA – Derbyshire, Allestree using the easy search box and click ‘Support’, sign up in just a couple of minutes and then choose the retailer you want to shop with, you will then be redirected back to the retailer’s website and then everything you spend with that retailer earns a donation to school. It’s completely free to use and your shopping won’t cost you a penny more – the stores donate the money not you !

Scholastic Book Club Catalogues are held in the school reception area throughout the year … For every £1 you spend on books through Scholastic Book Club, Lawn School receives 20% commission to

stock the library and classrooms. If in the future you do order directly online then please REMEMBER to select Lawn so we receive the commission!

LSA - About Us

The Lawn School Association (“LSA”) is our school parent-teacher association (PTA). PTAs are best known for their fundraising work but they have a useful social function too as fundraising events provide an opportunity for parents, staff and pupils to get together. The money raised at our events (e.g. Christmas Fayre, Easter Bingo, School Discos, Travelling Book Fair, Dinner and Dance, etc.) are intended to provide ‘extras’ not already provided by the school's main income – often 'fun things' that make learning more interesting and exciting.

The friendly LSA Committee for this year is – Louise Hubner – Chair (Y3 and Reception mum) Emma Taylor-Brittan – Vice Chair (Y1 mum) Jane Winter – Secretary (Y3 and Y1 mum) Graham Mansey – Treasurer (Y4 grandparent)

Can you spare half an hour to help at our next event?

Many of the stalls at our events are run by parents who give half an hour of their time to help

make the event a success and they still have time to enjoy the event with their family.

If you would be willing to do this then please get in touch via the LSA Hotmail address to let us

know– we never turn away any offers of help, however small – the more parents involved the

easier it all is!

Meetings and emails

If there are any parents/carers who would like to help the committee with running of events,

or if you have some great ideas for the future of the school, or would just be interested in

what we do, then why don’t you come along to our next meeting?

If you would also like to be on our circular e-mailing list to be kept in the loop e.g. receiving the minutes of our meetings, then please send your email address to our Hotmail account below.

The next meeting is in September - date to be confirmed. Please come along to our very friendly meeting to help the LSA with planning

events for the next school year!

Have a lovely Summer holiday everybody! The LSA Team
