Cab Conveniences. Long hours in theCat Skid Steer Loader are made easier bymany standard conveniences, includinga 12 volt DC power socket. Side, slidingwindows offer protection from theelements and allow fresh air ventilation.Redesigned side windows are removablefor easy cleaning. Cabs with the dooroption installed feature a new, automaticlock-out switch that prevents accidentaldamage by disabling the loader functionswhen the door is open.

High-Efficiency Climate Controls.Operating in extreme temperatures canbe more comfortable with the optionalcab air conditioner and heater. Airflowis increased up to 83 percent and is nowdirected through six adjustable vents.Twice as many vents make defrostingthe optional front door and side windowseasier. The heater and air conditionercan be ordered separately or together.

Instrumentation. Cat Skid Steer Loaderinstrument panels and gauges are simple,easy to use and reliable. Bright indicatorlights and audible warnings signal anycritical system situation. Positive feelswitches, with status lights, controlmost on/off functions. An engine aircleaner restriction indicator is nowin the cab for easier monitoring.

Operator Station

Visibility. Operating ease andproductivity is enhanced on theCat Skid Steer Loader by excellentvisibility. The wide cab opening offersan exceptional view of the work tool.The sloped angle of the enginecompartment allows excellent visibilityto the rear of the machine. A new,standard convex rearview mirror givesthe operator a panoramic view of themachine’s rear and sides. In addition,for better visibility in low-light conditions,the standard forward lights are nowadjustable 10 degrees in any direction.

Access/Egress. The Cat Skid SteerLoader cab is designed to make machineoperation simple, productive andcomfortable. Getting in and out of thecab is easy through a wide opening withthree point grab irons and skid-resistantsteps. Tilt cylinders are neatly locatedunder the lift arms so not to interfere withoperator access and egress. Plenty ofuncluttered floor space makes steppinginto the cab even easier.

Cab Packages. Several cab packagesand options are available. The standardcab offers features such as an adjustablecontoured seat, cushioned armbar, dualthrottle controls, pilot operated joysticks,12 volt DC power socket and optionalcup holder.

Excellent Visibility

Cat Diesel Power. The heart of theCat Skid Steer Loader power train isthe Caterpillar 3044C DIT engine.This rugged, reliable four cylinderengine offers aggressive performanceand a fast torque curve for quickresponse. It is also a low emissionengine, fully U.S. EPA Tier 2 compliant.

Dual Engine Throttle Controls. The handand foot throttles allow the operator tomatch engine speed to the task. The handthrottle is ideal for jobs requiringconsistent engine speed — such as coldplaning, trenching or snow blowing.The foot throttle lets the operatorvary engine speed and minimize fuelconsumption for other tasks such asload and carry, truck loading, gradingand dozing.

Anti-Stall Feature. The anti-stall systemon the Cat Skid Steer Loader allowsmaximum power to the wheels whileminimizing engine stalling. This systemhelps maximize productivity forexperienced operators and makes iteasier for novice operators to becomeproductive.

Variable Displacement Piston Pumps.The dual, variable-displacement, axialpiston pumps are driven directly offthe engine and provide hydraulicflow to the drive motors via a closedloop system. Drive motors transfermechanical power to the wheels viatwo high-strength, pre-stressed chainsper machine side. Chains run in an oilbath for constant lubrication and longlife. Chains are adjustable through slotsin the axle housings.

Drive Axles. The drive axles are forgedand induction hardened for maximumlife. They include a unique lip and outerseal to help prevent debris such as wireand twine from wrapping around theaxle and destroying the seal. An innerseal is used for permanent lubricationof axle bearings so no daily axle serviceis required.

Quick Coupler. Work tools can bechanged quickly and easily with theCat Skid Steer Loader’s quick couplersystem. The universal couplerinterface features:

• Opposing wedges ensure a tighttool fit, even after years of use

• Rugged design and largecontact area absorbs loadsand minimizes stress

• Vertical pins are chrome plated andlubricated for smooth engagementand prevention of corrosion

The standard quick coupler featuresmanual engagement and disengagementof work tools using two high leveragehandles.

An optional hydraulic quick coupler isalso available and allows engagementand disengagement of work tools withoutthe operator needing to exit the machine.Control of the coupler by use of a rockerswitch inside the cab makes work toolchanges quicker and easier.

Power and Reliability. Maximum powerand reliability are built into the Cat SkidSteer Loader hydraulic system. In additionto providing power to drive the wheels,this system also provides the loader liftand tilt functions, powers the auxiliarycircuit to drive work tools and drivesthe engine cooling fan.

Hydraulic Pumps. The hydraulic pumpsare driven directly off the engine formaximum hydraulic performance andreliability — no belts are used. Pumpsare fixed-displacement and provideflow to the loader and auxiliary circuitsat 81 L/min (22 gal/min) at high idle.Maximum system pressure for theloader and standard auxiliary circuitsis 23 000 kPa (3335 psi) for the 236Band 246B. A load sensing, variabledisplacement piston pump providesflow and pressure for the 248B loaderand auxiliary circuit at 125 L/min(33 gal/min) at high idle. Maximumsystem pressure for High Flow auxiliarycircuit is 28 000 kPa (4060 psi). Controlof the loader lift and tilt functions is byhydraulically-operated joystick controlsfor low effort and precise operation.

Auxiliary Hydraulics. Standard auxiliaryhydraulics to power work tools areavailable through quick connect hydrauliccouplings that are rigidly mounted tothe loader arm. The Caterpillar line ofhigh pressure XT™ ES hoses and O-ringface seals help ensure a leak-free system.

Reliability and Cleanliness. Hydraulicsystem reliability and cleanliness areimproved by using single componentsin place of multiple components, suchas the monoblock hydraulic valve andmonoblock pumps. Fewer leak pointsimprove reliability and result in a cleanermachine. In addition, hydraulic oilflows through a 5-micron spin-on filter.A filter restriction indicator is locatedin the operator station. A 74-micronscreen in the hydraulic tank preventslarger debris from entering the systemand causing damage to the hydrauliccomponents.

Hydraulic Oil Cooler. A high-efficiency,hydraulic oil cooler lets the Cat SkidSteer Loader work longer and harderin higher ambient temperatures, evenwhen using continuous high flow worktools. The high capacity, hydraulic oilreservoir also helps keep operatingtemperatures lower.

248B High Flow XPS. Maximumpressure can be maintained regardlessof the work tool speed or conditionswith this load sensing, pressurecompensating system. Hydraulic poweris maximized for any given load with avariable displacement, axial pistonpump that allows high pressure at anygiven speed for high hydraulic power atlow or high idle.

Hydraulic system has built-in reliability and provides exceptional lift, breakout and auxiliarypower to work tools.

Service Access. The rear door opens90 degrees for easy access to bothsides of the in-line (lengthwise)mounted engine.

Filters. All filters are easily accessible,which makes routine service quickerand virtually spill-free.

Cooling System. The radiator, hydraulicoil cooler and grill tilt up to increaseaccess to the cooling system duringmaintenance and allow easier cleaningof debris from between the grill andcooling package. The cooling fan ishydraulically-driven for quieteroperation and to eliminate the serviceand maintenance that comes with beltdriven fans.

Easy Tilting Cab. The machine cab cannow be tilted rearward by an individualusing a single tool. The cab is held inplace by a self-latching mechanism.When the cab is tilted back, all hydraulicpumps, motors, valves, lines and fuel tankare accessible for quicker, easier service.

Removable Belly Pan. A removablebelly pan section on the floor of themachine’s lower frame providesexcellent access for periodic cleaning.

Electrical and Hydraulic Lines. Cleanerrouting of electrical and hydraulic linescompared to former models improvesreliability and simplifies service.

Maintenance Points. Maintenancepoints are grouped in easily accessiblelocations.

Caterpillar Scheduled Oil Sampling(S•O•SSM). The scheduled oil samplingvalves are standard to allow regularmonitoring of the engine and hydraulicoil quality.
