The Heads Shopping Centre was the target of robbers on Thursday morning. Four suspects arrived in a black BMW and three of them asked for the Galaxy Entertainment Centre to open their doors while the fourth suspect left. OW exactly fraudsters got away with scamming business owners in a new kind of scheme H

remains a mystery. This is however a mystery that the Lydenburg SAPS will soon crack. The first case occurred on Wednesday last week. Alleged fraudsters bought batteries at a store in Lydenburg. They got in a taxi and were able to reverse the transaction somehow. They asked the taxi driver to drop them at the Alzu Petro Port on the N4 and disappeared. On Friday a similar crime took place again in Lydenburg. The alleged fraudsters bought items to the value of R18 000 at a local shop. The police were on the lookout for the culprits and were doing a stakeout at the Lydenburg taxi rank. It is believed that the suspects saw the police talking to a taxi driver and they disappeared. They were not able to reverse the R18 000 transaction and are still at large. Sgt E. Magoa, Lyd. SAPS, said that this is a relatively new method being used by criminals and they are investigating how technology was used to reverse the first transaction. ~ Michelle Boshoff

Daarinteen het ek dalk meer reg op ’n Audi, want my oer grootouers was Hollanders. Maar die meeste rowers in hierdie land loop vandag op vrye voete rond. Hulle sit in die boonste gestoeltes in die regering, in staatsdepartemente en in die semi-staatsinstellings. Moenie die private (sake) sektor vergeet wat al te graag kontrakte bewimpel met die staat en BEE organisasies, vir so ’n ietsie onder die tafel deur nie. Leon Schuster, of jy van hom hou of nie, is reg. Die hele land is siek. Terminaal, as gevolg van oneerlikheid, onetiese gedrag en die voortdurende rowery. Mense in die sakesektor het regeringspelle en kontakte hiervoor. Net soos destyds met die Nasionaliste, beweer hulle dit is nodig vir oorlewing. Slaap saam met die duiwel, die spul. Kyk net hoe is die arme Spoorweg pensioenarisse beroof. Mense wat hulle lewe lank die Spoorweg gebou het tot die beste in Afrika, krepeer nou van armoede. Gelukkig was hier niemand in my kantoor wat my kon snaaks aankyk nie. Dit het my weereens laat besef met hoe min mens regtig oor die weg kan kom. Nadat my ma weer ’n week in die hospitaal was en sy stadig herstel het ons altwee baie om voor dankbaar te wees. Die ongelooflike ondersteuning van my kollegas, familie en vriende. En dis waaroor die lewe gaan. Nie bonusse (wat groot gate sal toestop nie), nie aardse goed nie (nee dis nie soetsappig of Godsdienstig nie), maar die dinge om jou wat jou gelukkig maak. Al is dit net met ’n halfkroon se wierook. Arme Eskom, arme Suid-Afrika, arme Springbokke (deesdae boerbokke) en ’n gelukkige ekke. ~ Michelle Boshoff

In vergelyking was die gemiddelde maksimums oor 40 jaar vir die 7 maande soos volg: 32.8, 31.8, 30.3 28.6, 27.7, 23.7, en 24.4. Oor die algemeen was die maksimum temperature dus effe hoër.Die minimums was vanaf Januarie tot Julie: 10.0, 12.5, 11.2, 6.5, 2.2, -2.7, en -3.2. Die 40 jaar minimum gemiddeldes was: 10.7, 10.6, 9.4, 5.8, 1.6, -0.8, en -1.3.

Vir die eerste vyf maande van dié jaar was die minimums dus ietwat hoër en vir die oorblywende twee maande bietjie koeler. Ons was egter nog nie naby die minus 5 wat al sowat ses keer oor die jare aangeteken was nie.Baie interessant vir die van u wat termometers in julle motors het, is die koudste plek in die omgewing nie Lydenburg of bo-op die berg nie, maar by Rosehaugh op die Nelspruit pad by die brug met die knakkie in (waar die Sudwala pad afdraai. Kyk gerus volgende keer as jy oor die berg ry vroeg in die oggend na die temperatuur by Hops Hollow en weer by Rosehaugh. Dit sal ’n goeie drie grade koeler wees daar. Andre Coetzee.

THE R555 at Burgersfort was blocked by a burning truck after p r o t e s t i n g M a m p u r u community members stopped it and set it alight on Monday afternoon, Limpopo police said. “Travellers in that area are advised to avoid travelling on that road, or to drive carefully. The road l i n k i n g B u r g e r s f o r t a n d Eerstegeluk is completely closed with burning tyres and stones,” spokeswoman Colonel Ronel Otto said. “Motorists are also advised not to stop when people next to the road flag them down as if pretending to be hiking for a lift.”

Otto said police were deployed to the area. She advised motorists travelling in the area, especially the Eerstegeluk area, to drive carefully after members of the Mampuru community blocked the R555 and set a truck alight on Sunday night. She said the main road was opened on Monday morning but that traffic flowing although some roads in the Eerstegeluk area were still closed. Otto said no arrests were made yet and that the community was complaining about the building of a new road in the area that was promised but not yet implemented.

AT least R62-billion is needed to repair Zimbabwe's roads over the next decade, according to official estimates.The state of Zimbabwe's roads is the stuff of legend. From trucks submerged in water-filled craters in the central business district to gruesome crashes, drivers must navigate them all.For Naison Maravanyika, a 36-year-old taxi driver who knows Bulawayo's streets like the back of his hand, the conditions demand he drives like a Hollywood stuntman.Maravanyika said: "These roads are not for amateurs," he said as he navigated the edges of a road eaten away to a thin winding stretch resembling a long lifeless snake."Nobody is fixing these roads but we are paying a fortune to the Zimbabwe National Road Authority (Zinara)."Drivers must pay tolls to Zinara but a report delivered to parliament in June 2015 by Zimbabwe's Auditor-General Mildred Chiri revealed widespread abuse of the road authority's funds.Chiri said in the report: "Senior Zinara officials have been awarding themselves hefty unapproved allowances while flouting tender processes at a cost to the country of more than R110-million."Chiri's report outlines how officials line their pockets from road tolls. Drivers pay rates based on vehicle size at toll gates set up by the government between major towns and cities but the revenue is largely bankrolling the lavish lifestyles of officials.The report came as the transport minister Obert Mpofu announced more toll gates would be set up across the country to add R2-billion a year to the government's revenue base and finance infrastructure improvements.The equivalent of at least R62-billion is needed to repair Zimbabwe's roads over the next decade, according to official estimates.Neither Zinara nor Mpofu have responded to requests to comment on the report's findings.The cost comes not only in lives lost.
