On Monday morning 2 February, we got the information that the dam is more than 100% full and the wall is flowing over! The wall is 1.5km long and 88m high in spillway & 92m high in the outlet block. It is almost

th11km long in some places and holds approximately 2.86 billion cubic litres of water. De Hoop dam is the 13 largest dam in SA. The Dam Resource plans in the pipeline are a golf course, chalets and a conference centre.

There are currently two hippo’s in the dam. They are already experiencing problems with illegal fishing and hunting. Dept of Environmental Affairs will deal harshly with culprits.

THE SAPS Lydenburg stopped a hijacked truck just outside town at the Roossenekal road on Thursday last week. The Interlink registered with a FS numberplate, was hijacked near Westonaria the previous day. According to Captain Mashabela of the Lydenburg SAPS, the trailer operators tracked the vehicle and alerted the Police that the truck was travelling in the direction of Lydenburg. A large contingent of SAPS and Traffic personnel blocked the road. The driver then jumped out of the truck and disappeared in the bushes. It is unknown whether the trailers transported a load during the hijacking.Andre Coetzee

My ma is beenaf. So op die vooraand van Valentynsdag. (Giggel)Nee mense... letterlik... nie figuurlik nie...Die knievervanging was tot dusver ’n sukses en ons Boshoff’s doen ook nie dinge half nie. As ’n dokter oorspronklik ons boek vir ses dae in die hospitaal, rek ons dit tot ten minste 14 dae. Die oproepe, sms’e en whatsup’s het ingestroom...en op Facebook. Ons twee loop maar nog altyd so alleen en doen ons ding so dit is wonderlik om soveel ondersteuning te kry van almal.Moenie dink my ma lê net en slaap nie. Sy het ’n leerlingverpleegster omgekoop om elke dag vir haar ’n koerant te bring. Soos die wat haar ken weet, is dit meer vir die blokkiesraaie... maar jy kan haar nie vasvang as dit by algemene kennis kom nie. Ek het ’n hele week by Mediclinic omgesit. Ek was ses uit die sewe dae daar... en ek is net bly die pasiënt word eers Sondag ontslaan. Dan is sy bietjie sterker. Ek het Woolworths Food leeggekoop - geen skottelgoed vir my. Ruby lê my leepoog en vra wanneer kom ouma huis toe. Kan mens honde saamvat vir ’n hospitaal besoek? Ruby is mos nou nie enige hond nie. Toe koop ek maar koerante. O ja – en baie duur tydskrifte – die soort wat ek slegs een keer per jaar myself mee bederf. Dis al die gesit. En as ek laatmiddag van Nelspruit af kom toer ek en Ruby deur die dorp. Ruby, my beste maatjie se absolute gunsteling tydverdryf - rondry. Diegene wat ’n klein wit karretjie in die dorp met ’n bokser / kruis se kop deur die venster sien – dis ek en Ruby.Die koerante het oor Eugene de Kock gesing, onluste (brand die bad as ons nie water kry nie) en weer arme ou Steve. Lees weer die vorige sin. Steve Hofmeyr kan nie by die KKNK gaan sing nie. Kunstefeeste was altyd daar om almal se ideologië te ondersteun. Ai!!! Druk jou ore toe - selfs Beeld en ander media kweper hom toe onder die negatiewe media. Ek ‘like’ vir Steve. Ons moet nasiebou - dit gaan nie oor rassisme - iemand met so ’n talent behoort nie van die verhoog weerhou te word nie. Dus een van die dae is dit Hopalong-Cassidy by die Boshoff’s se huis. THE year of 2014 will go down as one of the most difficult for businesses in recent times. The strike in the platinum mining sector started in January and was only settled in June. Losses to the mines and their workers were enormous, but the trickle-down effect of the mines not buying meant suppliers were badly affected. That, in turn, affected their supply chains, down to the tax consultants of the managers of third tier suppliers. Only a week after the platinum strike settlement the metalworkers’ strike paralysed industry for a month. The post office did not deliver mail for months in some areas, new power stations again experienced construction delays, the radical EFF appeared on the stage and the e-toll saga developed in Gauteng.On top of all this the South African national pastime of sharing bad news brought a mood of pessimism and resignation. What, you may ask, will make 2015 any better? One of the answers to that question is – you. There are many things you can do to shield your business from negative external events, and to seek the opportunities that any adverse event brings.First the bad news. Power outages and strikes are not a possibility in 2015, they are a certainty. The duration and frequency are the only variables. Crime and corruption is not going away any time soon. in Lydenburg. This is a time bomb and needs to be addressed urgently! We do not have all the answers but we have identified a group of people that we believe could form a “Working Group” to assist us in finding the necessary solutions. The Chamber will facilitate the process along the guidelines and principles of the so-called “Communities of Practice” as developed by Etienne Wenger (You are welcome to google the person and the concept for more information). For a Community of Practice to be successful you need three things:1. A clearly defined area of concern: In this case it is waste management2. People that are passionate and knowledgeable about the topic (We want experience exchange), and3. Practice: we do not want talk shops we want action/implementationWe are fortunate that we already have people in Lydenburg involved in recycling/waste management. Thus far we have identified several institutions and people.Whatever we do must make business sense and must create jobs and wealth for the participants.It will also be important to identify advisors that can be invited to address the group on national and international best practises.The proposed date and time for the first meeting is Monday 9 February at 15h00 at the Anglican Church Hall on the corner of Kerk and Burger streets. IT's all too easy to get caught up in the excitement and uncertainty of buying a car, when the biggest single stress point is often getting the finance approved, but there are some keys things it's crucial to check on that all-too-brief test drive."Don't make the mistake of assuming that just because a car is brand new, it's the right car for you," advised Budget Insurance spokesman Martin Janse van Rensburg,Here's his 21-point checklist:First make sure the demo vehicle is the same model as the one you're buying. You're likely to be very disappointed in your expensive new car if you test-drive the 1.6-litre version and then buy the 1.2.Once you're comfortable behind the wheel, reach out and touch all the primary controls. Are they where you'd expect them to be? Can you reach them with your seatbelt fastened? Can you reach the handbrake lever with somebody in the front passenger seat. Carmakers are making huge effort into creating interiors with more style and unique layouts - but ergonomics can make or break a good car.Observe how certain features might become irritating in day-to-day use, such as a too-small glove compartment, or a finalist in the "world's most complex cup holder" competition - or just a remote boot latch that you can't reach without banging your forehead on the hooter button and waking the neighbours!The front doors may be large and easy to use - but check rear access as well, or getting your toddler in and out of their booster seat may become a pain in the back.Are the rear seats comfortable? Big enough for adults? Oddly enough, complexity is not an issue here; pairing of devices is not something you do while driving - it's illegal, for a start.If the car has a navigation system, is it intuitive to operate on the move and accurate in its directions?During the test drive, take the car over varying road surfaces, at varying speeds - don't be pressurised into a quick jaunt around the block on ultra-smooth roads.Make sure that the vehicle has enough power for its intended use; if you're a soccer mom you really do need that 1.6.Ensure that the brakes have a solid, reassuring feel to their operation - and not while you're just sitting in the car on the showroom floor. Due to the complexity of modern braking systems, the pedal feels totally different when the engine is not running.Drive briskly around a few sharp corners to evaluate the car's composure when abruptly changing direction over rough surfaces as well as how smoothly the transmission operates.Check to see if the car will easily manoeuvre where you need to use and park it; take special note of whether it has enough ground clearance to get over the hump between your garage and the driveway - often a problem with performance cars.Have someone walk slowly around the car while you sit in the drivers seat and check the blind spots. All cars have blind spots; how big are they on this model and does the car have blind spot monitors for assistance?Listen for noise levels inside the vehicle - how much wind noise and tyre roar enters the cabin.If you're buying a second-hand or used car, the first test-drive offers a chance to jot down the Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN, so you can run a vehicle history report. Than go back and take the car to a trusted mechanic for a second opinion."Once you've narrowed your search for new wheels down to two or three cars, drive your potential car candidates again, back to back on the same day," advised Janse van Rensburg. IT is, without any doubt, the world’s toughest motor race. Competed over more than 9000km, across three South-American countries, the 2015 edition of the legendary Dakar Rally saw competitors from across the planet take part. This year an intrepid South African team counted amongst the competitors for the fourth time, and the Toyota Imperial SA Dakar Team came back carrying a trophy.It was a trophy hard earned on the fast rally tracks of Argentina, massive dunes of the Atacama in Chile, and high plains of Bolivia. The Toyota Imperial SA Dakar Team had been more prepared than ever before, heading into the 2015 Dakar, but questions remained about the high altitude performance of the naturally aspirated V8 engine in the Toyota Imperial Hilux versus that of the turbo-diesel machines fielded by some of the other teams.However, the team from South Africa prevailed, nipping at the heels of the eventual winner Nasser Al-Attiyah through the mammoth race and scooping a podium position, second overall.‘Were it not for a navigational gamble that didn’t pay off the way we wanted, we may well have brought home a different trophy,’ said Team Principal Glyn Hall. ‘But we are extremely proud of what we achieved – a second position in arguably the world’s toughest race.’ When the dust finally settled over the final stage of Dakar 2015, it was Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah who took the win – just 35:34 ahead of the Toyota Imperial team’s Giniel de Villiers and German navigator, Dirk von Zitzewitz who claimed their second second-place finish for the team.‘We drove a great race this year, and the Toyota Imperial Hilux never let us down,’ said an ecstatic Giniel de Villiers after completing the podium formalities in Buenos Aires. ‘But Nasser is a very experienced and fast competitor, and catching him is never easy – never mind what you’re driving.’De Villiers/Von Zitzewitz (#303) were in a position to challenge for the lead early in the race, but their navigational gamble, together with moments of pure bad luck, saw them losing ground over Al-Attiyah, rather than making it up. ‘In the end the Dakar simply isn’t an easy race to win,’ continued Hall. ‘There are a lot of teams trying. Yet here we stand, holding the trophy for second place’Leeroy Poulter and Rob Howie in the second Toyota Imperial Hilux (#327) showed exceptional pace throughout the race, but a broken suspension part cost them significant time early on. They also missed one waypoint during the event, and were docked 40 minutes for the transgression.

SA Dakar team home with good results

As a result they finished in sixteenth position overall, but they were on course to win the final stage of the event. Sadly the organisers halted Stage 13 – between Rosario and Buenos Aires – after just one waypoint, due to flooding on the route. This meant that American Robby Gordon, who was leading at the time of the cancellation, was awarded the stage win, with Poulter/Howie posting a time just 25 seconds off his pace.Beyond the two Toyota Imperial Hiluxes, Saudi privateer Yazeed Alrahji performed extremely well in an identical machine to those fielded by De Villiers and Poulter. USING the ethos of minimalistic design, maximum space on a minimal footprint, quality, attention to detail, and affordable innovations, the VW up! measures 3 540mm in length, 1 641mm in width, 2 420mm in wheelbase (the longest in its segment), and 1 489mm in height, making it one of the smallest four-seaters around. Thanks to these dimensions the turning circle of the up! is an unusually compact 9.8m, but the up! doesn’t suffer in the practicality stakes with a 251-litre boot which stretches to 951 litres with the rear seat fully folded.

Volkswagen says the use of space is exceptionally good and although the up! is a small car, for its driver and three passengers it doesn’t feel cramped, offering ample leg room and knee room. This is because of the compact engine mounted well forward and compact running gear design. A driver has claimed squirrels ‘ate’ his new Toyota Aygo after the firm began using eco-friendly plastics to boost its green credentials. Tony Steeles said his car was repeatedly attacked by the rodents only days after it was delivered.“The aerial’s been chewed off twice, the oxygen sensor’s been damaged and various rubber-like trim parts have been chewed and damaged,” he told motoring magazine Auto Express. “The car’s been back for repairs four or five times.”As no other vehicles parked nearby have been attacked, Mr Steeles, from Croydon, south London, questioned whether Toyota’s use of plant-based plastics might be attracting the hungry squirrels.Door trims, seat cushions, spare tyre covers and boot liners are among the parts that the Japanese firm now makes with materials derived from natural sources, such as the castor oil plant.Mr Steeles’s dealer, Jemca Croydon, insisted there was no link between his car’s plastics and the rodent attacks.But it paid for the repairs each time he returned the car, and eventually swapped it for a new Toyota Yaris.A Toyota spokesman told Auto Express that the problem was ‘unusual’, adding: “We have very few complaints of this occurring in the UK.”However, he said the firm’s research and development teams would “investigate if any improvements can be made to the design of our products to deter rodents.”Auto Express editor-in chief, Steve Fowler, said: “It’s an admirable eco trend to manufacture car parts from plants, but could this green-fingered fad be making new motors irresistible to hungry wildlife?“We’ve always thought the Toyota Aygo was a tasty little car, but this is really taking the biscuit – or plant-based parcel shelf.”Mr Steeles said he wasn’t taking any chances with his new Yaris, and now stores it in a garage overnight.Toyota is not the only car manufacturer embracing unusual new materials.

AFTER moving millions of cars and trucks across the world for well over a century, the end is (almost) nigh for the internal combustion engine. This was the bold prediction from Unisa researcher Professor Godwell Nhamo, who said new developments in electric car technology - especially the lithium ion battery - could be game-changers that rendered the internal combustion engine an obsolete technology “in the not so distant future”.The professor, who heads the Exxaro chair in business and climate change at Unisa’s Institute for Corporate Citizenship, said the internal combustion engine was once a “game changer” that served to displace the steam engine and animal-drawn carriages. Likewise the lithium-ion battery could serve as a tipping point, especially in a world confronted by climate change and rising emissions of greenhouse gases.In a recent paper published by the Wessex Institute of Technology, Nhamo said the US and China were making significant investments in electric vehicle development.The US had invested more than $2 billion in grants for 30 factories to develop lithium-ion batteries, motors and other components for electric vehicles.Four years ago President Barack Obama proclaimed his ambition to see a million electric vehicles on US roads by this year 2015.Some of the early leaders in this new market were the Nissan Leaf, the Chevy Volt and the Renault Zoe.Although battery-car sales still lagged way behind conventional petrol and diesel power vehicles, sales of the Nissan Leaf had now passed the 100 000 mark. Yet there were still barriers for these new vehicles, including a reluctance by many consumers to take up new and unproven technologies. There were also concerns about their travelling range, the lack of charging infrastructure and higher purchase price compared to conventional vehicles. Cost was probably the main factor limiting uptake, he said.However, Nhamo cited studies suggesting that battery electric vehicles could be cheaper than conventional ones somewhere between 2020 and 2030 if battery costs continued to drop and oil prices continued to rise.He quoted Nissan South Africa managing director Mike Whitfield as saying that while R446 000 might seem costly for a new Nissan Leaf, its purchase price compared favourably with those of other vehicles when measured against the savings in fuel and maintenance costs over a six-year period.Nhamo suggested that buy-in from superpowers would be crucial and rising oil prices could speed up the momentum for change, but he did not appear to address the potential impacts of the growing exploitation of shale gas in the US and elsewhere.Nevertheless, he concluded that the entry of each new carmaker into the green car race would increasingly serve as “mini tipping points towards the death of the internal combustion engine”.His article “Green Growth: A game changer ushering in the death of the internal combustion engine”, was published in a recent issue of the Wessex Institute of Technology’s Transactions on Ecology and the Environment.The Mercury / Wheels24ED: The professor has not said anything new. Likewise in the rest of the third world. In the meantime, people who actually accomplish things are improving petrol engine technology hands over heels. Already approaching the same efficiency as diesels (which by the way also run on crude) modern petrol engines rival diesel economy and produce more power.Even if we stopped making petrol cars tomorrow, it will take generations to replace them with battery cars. And we will certainly destroy the planet with dead batteries and new pollutants from power generation long before that.

Selecting and arranging these items to suit your stuff can be the most time-consuming part of this project. To simplify that task, outline the dimensions of your plywood wall on the garage floor with masking tape. Then gather all the stuff you want to store and lay it out on your outline. Arrange and rearrange items to make the most of your wall space. Then make a list of the hardware you need before you head off to the hardware store or home center.

Lydenburg Akademie se leerlinge het medaljes ontvang tydens die huissport wat gehou is op 24 Januarie 2015. Lydenburg Akademie en Waterval CVO skool se kinders het tydens die byeenkoms deelgeneem.
