It’s that time of year again when summer is winding down and the winter months are closer than we’d like to admit. We hope you’ve had a great few months of activity, relaxation, enjoyment of the outdoors, and of course, taking advantage of all the opportunities offered for people of all ages here at The W. I know I’ve enjoyed walking around the facility and seeing kids learning tennis, baseball, basketball, and tumbling … adults participating in one of the great classes that our fitness instructors offer … as well as people of all ages enjoying the pool and the great things Heather has going there. There really is a place for everyone at The W.

Once again, in the following pages of our brochure, we hope you find many programs, classes, and other opportunities that spark your interest or the interest of someone in your family. I want to encourage you to make this the year you help a friend become more active. I know there have been many times in my life where having a friend help me … encourage me … or even drag me to work out has been the best thing for me. Plus, we all know it's more fun to exercise with someone! Tell someone this year about all the great opportunities as well as the first class facilities that are available to them at The W. I know how much my wife enjoys being able to have our four small children in The W’s child care while she gets a workout in. There really is a place for everyone … of all ages … at The W.

As a former elementary and high school physical educator, I’m passionate about the importance of developing lifelong healthy habits. I’ve seen firsthand the need for all of us, no matter what the age, to find fun, enjoyable ways to get moving and take care of our bodies. Make sure to visit www.the-w.org and check out all the fall and winter offerings we have that best fit the interests of you and your family. You can register online for programs as well.

I’ll look forward to seeing you around the facility.

special health and Wellness Programssurvivor careAccording to the American Cancer Society, nearly 1.3 million Americans will be diagnosed this year with cancer, the nation’s second-leading killer. The Survivor Care program will provide exercise for cancer patients, using minimal strength conditioning combined with flexibility training and low-impact aerobic exercise. Depending on chemotherapy or radiation schedules, each patient’s workout may include daily walks, use of rubber tubing for resistance training, fitness balls, or dumbbells.

heart happyThe No. 1 killer in the United States is cardiovascular disease, according to the American Heart Association. More than 60 million Americans are recovering from a stroke or heart failure or suffer from high blood pressure, heart defects, hardening of the arteries, or other circulatory diseases. Depending on a cardiac patient’s specific situation, Heart Happy can assist with the bridge from the clinical setting to mainstream workouts. Research shows that strength workouts help patients increase stamina for daily routines and reduce day-to-day demands on the heart.
