This report on the professional activities of the Wartburg college

faculty is my last as the Vice president for Academic Affairs and dean

of the Faculty. it is, therefore, a special honor to provide this record

of the accomplishments and to thank everyone who has contributed

to the success of the academic programs at Wartburg college. in this

report you will read about faculty who, over the past year, published and

presented creative and scholarly work. You will also read about service to

the professions, professional development opportunities, and service to

the community. this report underscores how faculty provide a model of

leadership and service to Wartburg college students and to the greater academic community

and how they live out their vocation as members of the Wartburg community. of course

this is only part of what faculty do to serve Wartburg. in addition to teaching, they serve

on committees, advise students, travel around the world, supervise undergraduate research,

prepare students for leadership and facilitate service-learning. Faculty assist in recruiting

students to Wartburg and they challenge themselves to be lifelong learners.

As i leave my post as dean of the Faculty, i have great hope for the future because i know

that the Wartburg college faculty will meet whatever challenges may face Wartburg in the

future. i know that they will be flexible and adaptable to the changing higher education

environment while remaining loyal to the mission of Wartburg. my very best wishes

and thanks to the Board of Regents, the faculty, staff, alumni, and students of Wartburg

college.

Sincerely,

Ferol S. menzel

Vice president for Academic Affairs and dean of the Faculty

Good morning. it’s nice to be here today.

i’m honored that you have given me the opportunity to say a few words at the closing of such a major portion of your lives.

even as a stranger to you, it’s tough to resist being sentimental, because i know how hard you worked to achieve the incredible things that you did this year, things that will change the image of Wartburg college for years to come … and because this will probably be the last chance that one educator will have to talk to all of you at once.

Because it is a “last chance” situation, i also have to resist the temptation to entertain you, for this is too serious a celebration …serious but sort of meaningless, because anything really significant about your time in college happened before you got here …this is just a sophisticated way of waving goodbye.

Goodbye to the past, a past you are supposed to remember.

But what are you supposed to remember?

i can’t tell you if you’ll ever use linear perspective, sentence diagramming or long division in a world of computers … But i can tell you what your administrators, professors, coaches, and advisers would like you to remember … that is: that they, in reflecting back to you your own potential, tried to tell you the truth.

And the truth for today is nothing too dramatic, just some important loose ends.

But, be careful, for the truth can sometimes be like finding out that your parents are coneheads, for you probably already have some evidence that suggests that things are not as they seem, and that the future will somehow be very different from the past.

of course, telling you the truth implies that you’ve been lied to, and you have. But don’t

waste your time looking for someone to blame … because, for the most part there is no single person that you can point to, and even if you could, they probably didn’t even know what they were doing. in my iS 201 class this past fall, we explored the subject of gender in horror films, wherein we discussed, among other things, why mirrors are so powerfully present. What makes a mirror horrifying is that it reminds us of our mortality, the shocking brevity of life, and the unknown abyss of death. And yet, a mirror is also just a surface. it only reflects what is visible to the eye. mirrors also embody a paradox: they reveal hidden truths, but also distort reality. they are the only means we have, however inaccurate, for seeing ourselves as others might see us. mirrors are at once intimate, private, and impossible to avoid in our culture, like the many screens that surround and beckon us.

take television.

it has made us spectators instead of participators, watchers instead of readers or writers, and, while claiming to be a mirror of ourselves, it has been a most persuasive deceiver. it has brought violence into our houses as an acceptable everyday occurrence. it has taught us that any problem, from pimples to total and inevitable world destruction, can be solved in 30 to 90 minutes, with interruptions every 10 minutes for the good life, telling us how much fun we should be having.

School adds to this lie by giving you the illusion that you can cope with your problems as easily as you can change the channel. in school, if you are failing a class, you can drop it or repeat it. if you do poorly, you can shrug it off … miss one question and get the next, sleep through the alarm and skip the 7:45, get a note from the doctor and be excused.

School also deceived you by guaranteeing you attention, supervision and care at the hands of people who cared about the future of the world and your place in it. Your papers, from sloppy to super, were read … Your ideas, from the ridiculous to the sublime, were listened to. Your questions, no matter how repetitive, were answered, and activities were planned all around you for your pleasure and choosing.

teachers and schools were designed to provide you with these things to encourage your intellectual growth. But, as a teacher, i wonder about all of that sometimes. For, in this future you and i are heading into today, if your writing isn’t neat, clear and interesting, it won’t get read. if your comments aren’t factual and original, you won’t be listened to. if your questions are ill-informed or rude, they will be ignored or even laughed at.

You may discover boredom as a part of real life. the ever-changing variety of college will be replaced by a job that will probably mean the same thing every day to cover the bills that used to be taken care of for you. thanksgiving will be thursday, christmas the 25th, and summer a warm morning that you see on your way to work. Real life has the potential to be cold and boring, and surely that is what it will be if you can’t make the transition into the truth of this world.

And there an awful lot of people who don’t make it. But it can be a great place for people who can. And you can.

there are hundreds of fine organizations out there, with really fine people in them,

Break the MirrorDr. Amy Nolan, assistant professor of English

“in the morning, after taking a cold shower—what a mistake—i look at the mirror. there, a funny guy, grey hair, white beard, wrinkled skin—what a pity—poor, dirty old man! He is not me, absolutely not. Land and life, fishing in the ocean, sleeping in the desert with stars, building a shelter in mountains, farming the ancient way, singing with coyotes, singing against nuclear war—i’ll never be tired of life. Now i’m [twenty-two] years old, very charming young man. i sit down quietly in lotus position, meditating, meditating for nothing. Suddenly a voice comes to me: ‘to stay young, to save the world, break the mirror.’”

thank you—now create your own good luck.

Copyright 2010 Amy Nolan and Robert Knox

who’d love to have some of your time, and in return they will give you a sense of self-worth that will make the feeling that you get while driving a new set of wheels feel cheap. Find a mountain and climb it. Learn to play the piano. take up some kind of hobby …. and if your work is a drag, make a game out of it … make the point of the game to become the best that you can at what you do. people sense it when someone else is really trying. it’s inspiring. if you do that, you’ll never be ignored. i guarantee it. Remember that people can’t give what they don’t have, and that with the end of your undergraduate education, nobody really owes you much of anything anymore, so you may just have to be the first one to pat the other person on the back and say, “nice job.”

in the future you are about to face, avoid the deceit of pop culture, another mirror, which tells us to dream about tomorrow and live for today. this world beckons to us—it pressures us to give in to the

omnipresent, winner-take-all, competitive culture all around us. if you don’t want to participate in such a culture, it takes a constant renewing of your mind. in simply observing the world around us, we become more capable of compassion, a quality that is sorely needed in every corner, every discipline, in every part of the world.

if your personal life is the pits, no job, no amount of money will make you happy. if you just live for today, you’ll be catching a lot of bullets, because today becomes yesterday too fast to do much more than flinch … and what may look great now, may have you hiding under a rock in the today that will come a few months or years from now. So don’t just dream about the future, plan on it.

it’s as real as vegetables.

i leave you with the words of poet Nanao Sakaki:

Amy NolanTenure and Promotion to Associate Professor

dr. Amy Nolan joined the Wartburg college faculty in 2006 after being a visiting assistant professor in the department of english and visiting professor in the department of integrative Studies in the Arts and Humanities at michigan State University, where she had earned her ph.d. degree in 20th century American Literature.

Nolan’s primary interest is studying and writing creative nonfiction which comprises short personal essays and memoir. She is specifically interested in exploring how writing nonfiction both allows and challenges people to honestly and openly write about and transform personal experiences into narratives that reach out to others who may share those experiences.

Nolan’s memoir, Water Music, chronicles the experience of growing up in a small town in michigan in the 1970s and 80s. She has had numerous creative nonfiction essays and articles published and has presented at the twentieth-century Literature conference as well as the college english Association, to name a few. She has also been a featured writer at the University of Northern iowa’s “Final thursday” reading series. Her essay, Close to the Bones, won the carter V. cooper Honorable mention prize and publication in the Bellevue Literary Review. Nolan has begun work on a second book titled Courting the Minotaur. She was also a writing, contributor, and research assistant for the thomas Gale Encyclopedia of Sex and Gender.

Nolan is an active campus citizen serving as a faculty adviser of The Castle, which publishes Wartburg student poetry, fiction, drama, essays, artwork, and musical compositions twice yearly. She advises two residence hall projects, has participated in the orange eXceLeration program

for first-year students, and has conducted writing workshops for students. She also serves as a consultant to the Writing Laboratory in the pathways center and teaches the first course in the Scholars program.

Students have said of dr. Nolan that she “allows students to find their passions within each class day and cultivates the inner-academic inside us all.”

dr. Nolan holds an m.A. degree from central michigan University and a B.A. degree from Alma college.

the standard definition of entrepreneur is “a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative.” With his energy and enthusiasm, tim ewest is the embodiment of that definition.

dr. ewest’s many courses are focused around student-centered, quality teaching and experiential learning through the use of case students, experiential projects, and service-learning, which synthesizes content through application and practice and ensures that course content is relevant. His courses are further enhanced through his many years as a manger in a variety of organizational settings, thus allowing him to provide scenarios and examples to illustrate the importance of course topics. this year he will take a dozen Wartburg students to china to study its economic rise and to look for ways to strengthen Wartburg’s commitment to being involved in china. ewest is also committed to student

involvement in undergraduate research. to date he has worked with eight students who developed research papers for submission at academic conferences and seven groups of students who have presented at three different conferences.

His doctoral research on leadership theory resulted in a series of published articles pertaining to transformational Leadership. He has presented papers in china and Austria and was appointed as a Visiting Research collaborator at princeton University, Faith and Work initiative. this research explores the development of a validated assessment tool to measure the individual and institutional manifestations of faith, religion, and spirituality at work. ewest was also appointed co-director of the Social entrepreneurship program at Wartburg, which he helped to create.

dr. ewest’s service on campus includes a Keep on Learning course and service on the Year of community president’s task Force, which generated new ideas to strengthen the impact Wartburg has on its surrounding community. in that capacity, he was asked to develop and grow the college’s commitment to partner with the city to start a new business incubator that would involve students in the development of new business entities. Students will also have the chance to learn from the business leaders who are mentoring the incubated businesses, thus giving them a clearer understanding of the decisions that entrepreneurs must make.

daniel Libeskind, a polish architect, may have summed up dr. Neil martinsen-Burrell’s first six years at Wartburg when he said, “Life it is not just a series of calculations and a sum total of statistics, it’s about experience, it’s about participation, it is something more complex and more interesting than what is obvious.”

martinsen-Burrell believes that civic engagement and service-learning can be an important way to motivate students to connect their learning to the practical world. one way that he accomplished this was by incorporating service-learning into sections of his statistical methods courses. Students worked with two partners from the Wartburg community, which improved their understanding of the course material and its application. Additionally, the partners found that the work produced by the students gave them valuable understanding of data they had been unable to analyze previously.

dr. martinsen-Burrell is an impressive campus citizen, serving as iS 101 co-coordinator, sitting on several college-wide committees and search committees. He also assists faculty and students by providing statistical consultation for those involved in research, particularly in the areas of experimental design, choice of methods and interpretation and communication of results. in addition to his work on standing committees, martinsen-Burrell is active in campus governance, including service on the commission on mission Service task Force, a multi-year commitment that studied the relationship of the missional concept of service to the future of Wartburg college. in connection with his work on the Budget and Building committee, he was elected by the faculty to serve on the Faculty council task Force, which was instrumental in the development of the president’s Budget Advisory council.

With regard to scholarship, martinsen-Burrell has continued work begun during his time as a post-doctoral fellow alongside his collaborators at New York city and the London School of economics. He has published on top fluid dynamics and assists students with various research projects as well. martinsen-Burrell also started a program of interdisciplinary scholarship with respect to his work as iS 101 coordinator. Having participated in the Lutheran Heritage Seminar to Germany in the summer of 2010, he presented at the 2010 Association of Lutheran college Faculties meeting on “integrating Heritage and mission: in the classroom and the World” that dealt with connections between that seminar trip and Wartburg’s iS 101 program.

Charles FiguraPromotion to Full Professor

there is always a special challenge involved when bringing research done for a dissertation in a university laboratory to a liberal arts college where the focus is on teaching and this challenge was no different for dr. Figura. After working with optics and stereographic visualization, he successfully settled on astronomy as the focus of his scholarship (studies of intermediate and high mass star formation, particularly the mechanisms that cause the initiation of star formation). Working with a group of astronomers to research star formation through molecular tracers, dr. Figura has successfully established a research program that has resulted in seven different presentations in the past five years. He has presented at the American Astronomical Society meeting and published in the Bulletin of the American Astronomical Society, monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and minor planet observations. in addition, he has traveled to and used several different world class astronomical observatories. this interest in astronomy is not only his primary research focus, but his enthusiasm for the stars spills over into his teaching and his role as director of the platte observatory.

He does not, however, spend all of his time stargazing. He continues to teach courses that serve the Wartburg plan of essential education for non-science majors as well as courses in the physics major. teaching in general education courses requires not only a breadth of knowledge, but an understanding of what motivates young college students to learn. He recently attended a workshop at the University of michigan on teaching in the sciences and as a result redesigned physics 101-102 around questions about living systems, an approach that speaks to the interests of college students as well as serves to educate students about science. dr. Figura is also actively engaged in faculty governance, most recently serving as the chair of the educational policies committee. He serves as one of the faculty sponsors of the exciting

William WithersPromotion to Full Professor

early in his career at Wartburg college dr. Bill Withers discovered leadership as one way of living out his vocation. it began with serving as department chair of communication

arts for 12 years. dr. Withers focused his energies on student recruitment while department chair, and as a result, the number of student majoring in communication arts grew to a high of 219 students in 2004. He also supported the circuit, one of the first efforts by college student media to tackle media convergence, and he encouraged the college to convert from analog to digital technology in the television operation to keep Wartburg up to date with the industry.

His interest in leadership also resulted in teaching the introductory course in the leadership certificate: exploring elements of Leadership. the calling to focus on leadership led to more student interest in the Leadership certificate program. Not only does he continue to work with the Leadership institute as assistant director, but he has taken his leadership skills beyond Wartburg. He currently serves on the Board of directors of iowa public television and served on the Leadership iowa Board of Governors.

dr. Withers has been engaged in leadership consultations with Hy-Vee, inc., the mudd Group, proctor and Gamble, Starbucks, and Nazareth Lutheran church. most recently he has presented at the 2011 cASe district Vi conference and Academic chairs conference on leading an academic department. He is a regular on the lecture circuit talking about leadership and customer service. He was engaged in communication consulting to the eLcA

church (2006 and 2007) and to the Ford Family Foundation as a national youth conference planner, keynote speaker, and presenter (2009).

Back on campus he teaches in public relations, integrated marketing communication, and advises the tower Agency, student-run public relations organization based in the Wartburg college communication Arts department. dr. Withers is the recipient of both the chellevold Award for teaching excellence and Advisor of the Year award.

Mariah BirgenPromotion to Full Professor

Since coming to Wartburg college dr. mariah Birgen has demonstrated a willingness to be innovative in programming and curriculum. dr. Birgen was

an early leader in inquiry Studies 101, a course for all first year students that introduces students to what it means to be a college student. Shortly after that she was appointed to lead the Scholars program, a selective program for outstanding students who are eager to challenge their intellectual powers. As a result of this leadership she has become active in Upper midwest Honors council and now serves as the iowa Representative to that organization as well as the National collegiate Honors council. She has also presented at the conference of the Upper midwest Honors council lending her expertise to the organization and accompanied students to present their own research.

dr. Birgen is also a active member of Science education for New civic engagements and Responsibilities (SeNceR). SeNceR applies the science of learning to the learning of science, all to expand civic capacity consistent with the mission of Wartburg college. “SeNceR is designed to improve science education by

Promotions and Tenuresfocusing on real world problems and, by so doing, extends the impact of this learning across the curriculum to the broader community and society. We do this by developing faculty expertise in teaching ‘to’ basic, canonical science and mathematics ‘through’ complex, capacious, often unsolved problems of civic consequence.” (SeNceR website). Her participation in SeNceR has helped to transform courses in the Wartburg plan of essential education.

dr. Birgen has also been instrumental in redesigning the calculus sequence in mathematics to better serve first-year students. during the summer of 2009, she was an instructor at the University of iowa for the Undergraduate Research experience Workshop focusing on mathematical modeling. She has published in the College Mathematics Journal and presented at the Joint mathematics meeting, the iowa council of teachers of mathematics, and the SeNceR Summer institute.

dr. Birgen earned her ph.d. degree in mathematics from the University of michigan and a B.S. degree in engineering science from the University of california, Berkeley. She teaches calculus i, ii, multivariable calculus, Applied calculus, Advanced calculus, differential equations, complex Variables, and mathematical modeling.

RetirementsDr. Judy GriffithProfessor of English, 1997-2011

dr. Judith Brush Griffith loves reading mysteries. Her home is lined with books written by the best mystery writers and no book store goes unnoticed as she travels around the world. there is, however, no mystery about her devotion to the students at Wartburg during the past 14 years. dr. Griffith’s service to the college includes chair of the english and modern Languages department for six years; assistant dean for faculty development, co-chairing the iS 101 creation, development, and supervisory committee; and serving on the educational policies committee, the Faculty development committee, and the Faculty Review committee, to name a few. She also has served on 12 search committees.

in addition, dr. Griffith taught courses in english ranging from english composition to introduction to Literature to Young Adult Literature. As the faculty member responsible for english Secondary education, dr. Griffith spent time in the schools supervising student teachers. Her mentoring of students extended to accompanying them to the National council of teachers of english conference for six years. one of the hallmarks of Judy as a teacher was the time spent in individual conferences with students to review and improve writing assignments. this individual attention to each student in her class contributed to learning and helped to build bonds with students that will exist well beyond her retirement.

dr. Griffith also has remained an active scholar, both within the academy and the community. Her accomplishments include 15 peer-reviewed presentations at the state, regional, and national levels. She has served as judge for the iowa High School Speech Association. She has served area schools by consulting and has presented to staff

development in Waterloo, New Hampton, Waverly-Shell Rock, and Janesville. For Waverly-Shell-Rock schools, she designed and conducted both writing assessment and 10th grade english placement writing assessment.

Joyce Boss writes in her recommendation for emeritus status the following, “in sum, dr. Griffith has served Wartburg college, our students, our colleagues, and our community with thorough dedication, enthusiasm, and distinction. She is beloved by innumerable students and held in high regard by her colleagues.” dr. Griffith retired at the end of Fall term 2010 to her home in cedar Falls. She plans to continue the international travel that she and her husband enjoy and will, no doubt, continue reading the mystery books that line the walls.

Dr. Lynn OlsonProfessor of Mathematics and Computer Science, 1978-2011

dr. Lynn olson signed his first contract to teach at Wartburg college in 1978. He has been successfully teaching mathematics and computer science ever since. A great

deal has changed at Wartburg since those early years. certainly the field of computer science has changed at an astonishing rate, new buildings have been built (including the new Science center), and new technology has been introduced (slide rule to ipad) during this time. What has not changed is his devotion to students and their success and to his craft. dr. olson has not only made relationships with his students central to his teaching but he maintains those relationships well beyond graduation. Just ask Lynn who graduated in 1989, and he will look at his list and most likely be able to tell you where they are and what they are doing. in part this ability to get to know students was fostered through

the supervision of summer internships and teaching a wide range of courses in statistics, geometry, computer science, mathematics in modern Society, Finite mathematics, Algebraic Structures, discrete Structures and differential calculus, to name a few. He has traveled with students during the Historical Roots of mathematics and physics course and served on the teaching team for inquiry Studies 101, a first-year course that introduces students to the mission of Wartburg and to the liberal arts. He also supported the practice of inviting graduates back to campus to offer seminars to current students, thereby keeping in touch with alumni and providing opportunities for student-alum mentoring. there is even a note in his file from the Admissions office thanking him for meeting with prospective students and being one of the best recruiters for the college.

dr. olson served as chair of the department of mathematics, computer Science, and physics from 1994 to 2009, and his service on faculty committees and teaching teams is notable. He is also well known for taking advantage of continuing education opportunities especially in the field of computer science. even after completing the doctorate, he took courses at the University of Northern iowa and the University of Wisconsin and attended numerous conferences and workshops to learn the latest in computer science.

in writing his letter of retirement, dr. olson states, “it has been a difficult decision because i have truly loved my role on the faculty. i have felt called to serve and i am constantly aware of the blessings i have received.” We are grateful for Lynn’s excellence in teaching and engagement with students. it is tempting to say that he will be missed, but it is more likely that he will continue to cherish and nurture all those relationships with students and colleagues that he so carefully created well into his retirement.

Dr. Janice WadeProfessor of Music, 1987-2011

dr. Janice Wade has served as the music director and conductor of the Wartburg community Symphony and professor of music at Wartburg college for 24 years. the longest serving conductor in the symphony’s 58-year history, her tenure on the podium at Wartburg college includes conducting 126 concerts featuring 62 award-winning guest artists.

Wade’s innovative concerts have included works for children’s choirs, dancers, live puppets, and narration. She is well known for bringing silent films to campus, and she commissioned and premiered five new works by composer Linda Robbins coleman. Wade also secured the rights to the “Ford made in America” project, making the Wartburg community Symphony the only symphony in iowa granted rights to perform the state premieres of America the Beautiful, a composition by Joan tower.

Before joining the Wartburg college faculty, Wade founded and was conductor of the des moines community orchestra. in addition, she was principal second violinist of the des moines Symphony, served as editor of the private teachers Forum in the national journal of the American String teachers Association, maintained a private teaching studio, and served on the faculty of the interlochen National music camp. in 2006 she was named the Leopold La Fosse outstanding Studio teacher by the American String teacher Association. in 2007 she received the Key to the city of Waverly for her many contributions to the community with the Wartburg community Symphony.dr. Wade earned her Bachelor of music education and master of music education degrees from drake University and completed her doctor of musical Arts degree at the University of iowa in 1992.

Dr. Ferol S. MenzelVice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty, 1999-2011

Just as Wartburg college was getting a facelift to begin the millennium, another makeover was occurring inside.

the academic program was being transformed with

more emphasis on faculty development, research, experiential and service-learning, and leadership. one of the lead architects was dr. Ferol menzel, the vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty, who came to the college in 1999 and is departing at the end of this academic year.

“For me, this was a dream-come-true job. Wartburg was the type of college i wanted to serve. it is Lutheran, the focus is on undergraduates, and there were opportunities to make a difference in the lives of students.

it has been, she added, “a very interesting career journey.”

it started when Ferol Schricker left her native cincinnati in 1964 to attend the ohio State University, intent on becoming an occupational therapist. Her first job took her to ithaca, N.Y., where she met Bruce menzel, who was studying at cornell University. After marrying, the couple moved to iowa when Bruce took a teaching position at iowa State University. A fisheries and wildlife biologist, he would eventually chair the department of animal ecology, retiring in 2004.

deciding that she wanted to teach, Ferol earned her master’s degree in 1975 and doctorate in 1979 in child development at iSU.

She was hired in 1980 by Grand View college—now university—in des moines as an assistant professor of psychology. two years later, she began an administrative ascent covering eight positions, taking her

from chair of the psychology department to vice president for student life and enrollment management in 1998 at the school, which—like Wartburg—is affiliated with the evangelical Lutheran church in America.

“Very early in my career at Grand View,” menzel said, “president Karl Langrock and tom Fisher, who was the provost, saw in me leadership potential. So i had the best of all worlds. i was able to teach, and i was able to do administration. i had a wonderful opportunity to grow as a teacher and an administrator. in the end, i decided my first love was academic affairs.” Her 19 years at Grand View sowed the seeds for her next move.

“i fell in love with the type of relationships you can build at a small college,” menzel said. “i also fell in love with the Lutheran higher education system, and the importance Lutheran colleges put on educating students in vocation.“So when the position at Wartburg opened up i gave it a try.”

She had ties to Wartburg past and future.

New Wartburg president Jack ohle, a former drake University administrator, had worked with her on committees in des moines. His Wartburg predecessor, Robert Vogel, was Grand View’s incoming interim president.

“i agreed with both Bob and Jack that the Wartburg’s mission was very, very clear in that we were not only committed to our relationship with the church, but also committed to service and leadership,” menzel said.

Her goal was to enhance the “living our learning” aspect of the college’s mission involving undergraduate research, service-learning, the leadership institute and studying abroad. “We wanted to increase student participation in those programs and really highlight them as being value-added to a degree,” she said. “it wasn’t just that you were coming here for a major and minor, but what we call ‘deep and integrative learning.’”

menzel would champion creation of the center for community engagement, the start of the current faculty sabbatical program, significant growth in faculty positions and development of improved academic facilities and resources.

dr. Lake Lambert, now dean of the college of Liberal Arts at mercer University in Georgia, headed the cce from its inception in 2003 to 2008.

“Ferol was always an advocate for the expansion of experiential learning at Wartburg,” he said. “this helped make the cce possible, and it will be an important part of her legacy. i can’t imagine starting the cce without her support.”

dr. Fred Ribich, associate vice president for academic affairs the past year and the 2011-12 interim dean of the faculty, praised her contributions.

“She was a strong supporter of faculty development,” Ribich said, “overseeing the overhaul and implementation of our sabbatical program as well as growing our programs that support faculty as teachers, mentors, and scholars.”

He also cited her “steadfast promotion of development and innovation in teaching-learning practices that are student-centered and actively engage students in their learning.”

menzel takes great pride in faculty development. “When i came here development was broken,” menzel said. “We had a faculty development committee that didn’t want to award faculty development funds. We had a one-day orientation for new faculty that consisted of a series of administrators telling people how to fill out forms. We now have adopted an extended orientation for faculty—a whole year orientation, and it’s even moved into some activities in the second year.

“We established the sabbatical program that’s available to all faculty on a seven-year cycle, and we changed the philosophy on the faculty development committee to really support research and to present that research. We’ve been successful in getting people to national meetings. We’ve been

successful in increasing the publications and presentations that our faculty do here.”menzel appreciates the role the faculty has played in engaged learning.

“i think the research on teaching in higher education has moved faculty toward adopting more engaged instructional methods in their classrooms,” she said. “We’re not 100 percent lecture, we’re a combination of lecture plus all sorts of instructional methods.”Ribich praised her contributions.

“the fact that she persevered and thrived for 12 years as academic dean under three presidents is testimony to her resilience, resolve, and vitality as a person as well as an executive officer of the college,” he said. “She has an astute capacity for being decisive after weighing the input and advice of others.”

For tyAnn Lindell, former assistant dean for academic affairs and now executive vice president for academic and student affairs at Finlandia (mich.) University, the quintessential menzel moment occurred during January 2010 blizzard.

“it was president (darrel) colson’s first winter in iowa,” she recalled. “As chief academic officer it was Ferol’s responsibility to decide if we would have classes or not. i stayed with her the night before rather than drive to Waterloo because the roads were so bad. At 7:30 the next morning, i go outside to see Ferol, in her dress clothes, shoveling out where the snowplow had filled in the drive. “that captured Ferol perfectly—elegant and determined.”

the menzels will live in Breckinridge, colo., where they have had a home. their two sons live in colorado.
