Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,

The Great Learning or Daxue is one of the "Four Books" in

Confucianism. The Four Books are The Great Learning, The

Doctrine of the Mean, The Analects of Confucius and The

Mencius.

How do you make your life better and world a better place? I'd

like to share an extract from one of the chapter of The Great

Learning--- Self-cultivation start from positive mind.

修身在正其心篇

“所谓修身在正其心者 1，身有所忿（愤怒），则不得其正 2；

有所恐惧，则不得其正 3；有所好乐，则不得其正 4；有所忧

患，则不得其正 5。心不在焉，视而不见，听而不闻，食而不

知其味 6。此谓修身在正其心 7。”

1What is meant by, "the cultivation of the person depends on

rectifying the mind may be thus illustrated: -if a man be under the

influence of anger, he will be incorrect in his conduct. He will be

the same, if he is under the influence of terror, or under the

influence of fond regard, or under that of worry. When the mind is

not present, we look and do not see; we hear and do not

understand; we eat and do not know the taste of what we eat. This

is what is meant by saying that the cultivation of the person

depends on the rectifying of the mind.

2There will always be people in our lives who like to complain, or

those who are moody. Those who have a sulk in their hearts, when

this anger grows, it is easy to be dissatisfied with things, even if it

is a little thing, and will be very angry. Those who like to complain

are more likely to complain. This kind of people feel that what they

say is the most reasonable, and other people's reason is wrong or

excuse. For example, when you go to a movie, you may think why

is your seat so small? The people behind you are eating their

snacks so loudly, the shoes you wear is so uncomfortable, and you

may start angry or upset. After two hours of film, the silent anger

still lingers in your mind. If we are often sad in our hearts, we

cannot keep a positive mind.

3Why do you say when people have a fear, the mind is not

static, for example, the fear of doing business at a loss, but

after made money, and worried that others envy, every day

you are afraid of what others will do to you.

4Having your own preferences is actually a good thing, but

when there is excessive indulgence, the mind is affected, it’s

like kids who love their gadgets all day long.

5The other case is excessive worry, which is caused by

excessive considerations of gain and loss, such as when

some parents discipline a child, they worry that their own

discipline method is too strict and give the child too much

pressure and unhappiness, but also afraid that they may be

indulging in their children, thus their children don't behave.

Growing the child is like a kite string, too tight, the string will

break, too loose and afraid it won't fly.

6 When these four emotions are present in our lives, it

always leads to an absence of mind. When one is in the

clouds, it is likely that the attention is focused on other

things, like the eyes look at something but heart is in other

place, ears hear the sound, but have not really listen, when

eating, only know send the food to his mouth, but I do not

know the taste of it. In fact, I occasionally encounter this

situation in class, some students look at you and listen to

you, but his mind is on other things. In whole lesson, he

heard every word you said, but he did not understand. In his

mind, may anger with something happened, may afraid next

lesson’s examination, may think about the games in gadgets

or worry about the results.

7In fact, this chapter is telling us that if we want to cultivate

ourselves, how we do self-cultivation from positive mind? It

is to avoid excessive resentment, fear, fond regard and

worry affect own mind. Let us all learn to be mindful and

make this a better world.

The APMOPS competition is organized by Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) in Singapore. NHJS is once again privileged to host the First Round of the Mathematical Olympiad here at our school on Saturday, 14 April 2018 from 09 30 – 12 00 noon. Selected top individual candidates during the first round will be invited to participate at the Invitation Round to be held on Saturday, 26 May 2018 at Hwa Chong Institution in Singapore. >> Reporting Time for Primary 1 to 5 Students due to National Examination. We would like to inform you that P6 classes will be having their Ujian Nasional (USMBN) from 3 - 5 May 2018. In connection to this, a special timetable will be set for rest of the Primary levels: - All students from Primary 1 to Primary 2 will be required to report to school from 3 – 5 May 2017 at 10.30 am. - All students from Primary 3 to Primary 5 will be required to report to school from 3 – 5 May 2017 at 10.45 am. >> Business Case Competition, Bali 8-10 March 2018 We would like to inform you that our team got 4th place in the Finals of Business Case Competition. They did their best and was described by one of the judges as ‘the best presenters’. Being new to the competition and the youngest team, they were able to present their Business Project with confidence and fluency “at par with university students”. We learned a lot from this event and will be looking forward to next year’s competition. Thank you all for the support! Ms. Emelly, Mr. Klaus and the S4 Team of Angie, Annisa and Richelle Reflection by Annisa Victoria S4E Joining the Stenden Business Case was more than joining a competition – it was a learning experience. Stenden forced us to think on our feet and I liked that they challenged us to be a more confident speaker. Although I felt like I butchered some of my impromptu speeches, I also felt more comfortable to speak to an audience. It was really refreshing to have a different scenery that we were used to back in Jakarta, especially now when exam season is approaching and we’ll be even more cooped up inside. We did not win but that is alright. We came back learning more than we expected, and that’s what matters more. Overall, it was a valuable experience that I thoroughly enjoy, and I am excited for more opportunities to come.




>> I/A Success Camp Please be informed I/A Success Camp is now restructured and will run from 19-27 March 2018. This year, I/A Success Camp (non-stay-over) will run after EYR on different dates for Secondary 4 and Junior College 2. They will follow the timetable as below.

We strongly recommend your child/ward to attend these sessions which will allow them to simulate answering past exam papers aside from the in-class discussions of the answers to these papers. Individual and small group consultations with the respective subject facilitators will also help cater to the students which require more attention. Kindly advise your child/ward to come to school one hour before the scheduled examination and bring the necessary materials such as stationeries, electronic statement of entry and photocopy of your child's passport.
