as a weapon." "He tried to use the handle ASSAULTED Jennifer, RN Glendive, MT A Physician Assistant was in the Emergency Room trying to restrain a male patient in his mid30s while he was being combative lying on a gurney. I went to assist the Physician Assistant in the restraint and the patient pulled out his IV, exposing me to his blood and struck me on my left forearm while he was flailing. The patient was pulling back and forth on the heavy metal handle of the gurney, trying to dislodge it to use as a weapon, and his wife was at the end of the gurney telling us to just let him go. I explained that if he pulled the handle off as he was trying to do, we would all be in more danger. We ended up having to pry his hands off the handles and restrain the patient for his safety. Assault is not part of the job.
