2014 GAPAN STATE PRESIDENT MESSAGE

FROM GAPAN’S NEW STATE PRESIDENT KEISHA FRANKS, BSN, RN, CPAN

Hello and welcome to the Georgia Association of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (GAPAN). I come before you again with honor as I prepare to serve a second term as President of GAPAN for 2014-2015. Last year I challenged members to engage in continuous educational opportunities. I would like to thank those of you that accepted that challenge. I saw many new faces and new members at the ASPAN National Conference in Las Vegas representing GAPAN. There was

an ASPAN conference in Macon with great attendance. The GAPAN State conference in Augusta was wonderful and also had great attendance. All of these are examples of nurses being engaged which enhances professional growth and excellence. It shows the recognition of perianesthesia nursing as a specialized field that requires continuous educational engagement and collegiality. I am proud of the accomplishments of GAPAN under my leadership. I will be the first to admit that I did not accomplish anything alone, but with the help of a great Board of Directors and great leaders at the District levels. I look forward to working with these enthusiastic leaders again to push GAPAN to the greatness that I believe it can achieve. STRATEGIC GOALS 2014-2015: Member retention and development

1. Maintain membership and develop leaders from current membership

2. Current leadership become more involved with mentoring within facilities and district levels

3. Encourage that ASPAN/ GAPAN is incorporated into the perianesthesia nurse orientation process

4. Leave no perianesthesia nurse behind

Social media development and interaction 1. Enhance the current methods of social media and interaction

with GAPAN members (ex. Webinars, district go-to meetings and website enhancement)

Thank you for your support of GAPAN. I am proud to serve another year as your President. Let’s work together for another memorable and productive year. Sincerely, Keisha Franks, RN, BSN, CPAN GAPAN President 2013-2014 Email [email protected] (404)630-9688 cell (770)793-5894 work

ACCOMPLISHED GOALS LETTER FROM THE 2014 GAPAN PRESIDENT- KEISHA FRANKS

As my term comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on our year. In September 2013, I set goals to improve communication, strengthen component viability and mentor new members to ensure our continued success. These goals were also identified by my predecessor and I felt they were important to our organization to continue and ensure their completion. My first goal was to improve communication at both the State and District levels. I feel this goal was met and communication has been greatly improved. Our newsletter the “ Awakener” has truly been awakened by our wonderful and dedicated web editor Janice Wilson, RN, BSN, CAPA, CNIII. Her work received recognition by ASPAN at the National Conference April 2014. The “Awakener” received then ASPAN Component Newsletter 2014 Contest Award. That was a proud moment personally for me as the GAPAN President. I was well aware of the struggles she had to overcome to obtain this award for herself and GAPAN. I would like to thank all of the districts for your commitment and assistance in achieving this great accomplishment. I strongly encourage you all to continue this commitment for GAPAN to remain as a component of greatness. I commend all of the districts that have developed a form of social media (ie: Facebook, Twitter) that reaches out to their members and provides members with valuable information. The Board uses Go-to-meeting provided by ASPAN to hold at least one meeting per year. There have been several districts that express this as a possibility to them as well. I have committed to work on this or get this information to the district for use as it becomes available. I feel that this goal was accomplished and thank all of you for your assistance. Our membership continues to remain stable. I have become involved with the Membership and Marketing SWT Committee (ASPAN) to ensure that GAPAN is doing everything possible to encourage membership and growth. I realize that our facilities and professional organization are encouraging advanced degrees for nurses and this competes with our availability and

commitment to our professional organization. I ask that each district assess the needs and availability of their members and use this assessment to better meet the need and availability of their members. The Board members and myself have offered mentoring and training to district officers as needed. I will continue to offer my time and knowledge as a leader to districts as requested. I encourage all District President /officers to attend board meetings to learn the process and the responsibility of each officer. There is a job description for each officer in the Policy and Procedure Manual which can be found on the website. The Board also developed a checklist to guide officers through their role. All leaders are encouraged to attend the Leadership Development Institute to have direct contact with leaders at the National level for more leadership guidance. It has been a rewarding year as your President. I truly appreciate the support and encouragement I have received during my term. The Board members that have served with me have functioned as a great team with great rewards to show for their hard work and dedication. We won our second Shining Star and the ASPAN Component Newsletter 2014 Contest Award for 15 plus pages. I honestly believe that GAPAN has what it takes to be among the Gold Leaf recipients. You are a group of highly skilled professionals that takes pride in your specialty. It has been a pleasure to serve and represent GAPAN as your 2013-2014 President. MEMBERSHIP IN GAPAN MEMBERSHIP IN GAPAN IS THROUGH OUR NATIONAL ORGANIZATION, THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PERIANESTHESIA NURSES (ASPAN). THE DUAL MEMBERSHIP IS AVAILABLE ONLINE AT WWW.ASPAN.ORG

WHY BE A MEMBER? Membership in a professional organization requires a commitment of money and time. Although in this day and age, time and money seem like they are both in short supply, membership in ASPAN/GAPAN is well worth the investment. By joining and being active in your specialties’ professional organization you are demonstrating to you family, friends, co-workers, administrators and most importantly your patients and their families that you are vested in your profession, not only in doing the day to day job requirements, but also in the desire to stay abreast of changes and growth within your specialty. TIME The amount of time you choose to invest in the growth and development of the organization can be as much or as little as you chose. As our personal lives change so do the priorities we establish. We have many members who have kept their membership active even when their individual contributions needed to decrease due to other obligations; some have been able to again increase their roles within their districts as personal commitments changed. The important thing is that their membership remained active so they received publications and opportunities to keep up to date in their practice even when “in person” involvement wasn’t always possible.

2014 HOT TOPICS IN GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS:

EBOLA The news has reported a lot of information to the public about EBOLA from a variety of sources. As nurses, we are on the front line and our top priorities need to be the safety of not only the patient, but also the employees that come into close contact with the patient. This is true whether the contact is by a face-to-face interview with a preadmission nurse or with the patient as we screen them prior to surgery. TEAM WORK IN PATT: “Together We Can Do So Much”

By Kimberly Reed RN BSN

Vince Lombardi said "Individual commitment to a group effort--that is what makes a team work, company work, a society work, a civilization work." Each of the nurses in Wellstar Kennestone Hospital’s Preadmission Testing and Teaching department (PATT) are individually committed to their work and as a team, committed to their department but in the last two years, they’ve taken team work to a new level. With the launch of EPIC fast approaching, Patty Cohen, RN, MSN, who was then clinical coordinator for PATT, saw the perfect opportunity to make much needed changes to the PATT process. Historically long wait times, delays in test resulting, and missing paperwork were the norm. Patty along with Dr. Paul Turry of the anesthesia department introduced new criteria for preoperative testing. These new criteria, a Simplified Strategy for Operative Testing was revised 7/10/2013 and was based on the draft from Practice Advisory for Preanesthesia Evaluation from the American Society of Anesthesiologists (2012). It utilized minimal testing and decreased the number of patients required to come in to the PATT department. As fewer patients were coming to PATT, RNs would then call those not coming to obtain their health history and then mail or e-mail preoperative instructions. From this new model also came the idea of contacting all patients prior to PATT appointments and “prescreening” them. Those found to fall into the simplified criteria requiring testing prior to surgery, were given a PATT appointment. This “prescreening” also allowed for the RNs to obtain test results the patient may have had at other facilities, as most testing is good for six months prior to surgery. Those individuals called that did not require testing based on the simplified criteria were then provided preoperative instructions. In order to organize the process, teams were then formed. The full time RNs were assigned teams. Each team consists of 2-3 RNs, known as facilitators, and serves a specific surgery practice or specialty. Team A works with gynecologic surgery, vascular surgery, 1 general surgery practice, bariatric surgery and orthopedic surgery excluding total joint patients. Team B has the spine/neurologic surgery, thoracic surgery, ENT, oral/dental surgery, podiatry, radiology, breast, plastic surgery and 2 general surgery practices. Team C services urologic surgery and an additional orthopedic practice, again excluding total joint patients. Team D works with all total joints patients. Patients who come into PATT are seen by 2 CNAs who perform their testing such as EKGs and lab work, with a smile. All patients are seen in decreased times, some in as little as 20 minutes door to door.

Each of the RNs on a team has a specific job or assignment: one results the testing done in PATT the day prior and contacts the surgeon or anesthesia

with any abnormal results. Another RN prepares the chart for the next day OR, which includes order entry, making sure H and P and informed consents are in EPIC or on the physical chart and final OR time confirmations. The third RN makes phone calls to patients, obtaining health history and providing preoperative instructions. She is assisted by a pool of part-time and PRN RNs as well as the other RNs on her team once they have completed their other tasks. This change has increased patient satisfaction and has decreased patient anxiety. Patients have reported that receiving a preoperative phone call several days to weeks prior to surgery has given them the opportunity to have many questions answered. They also have stated that having a specific RN they can contact help them with any additional questions that come up prior to their surgery is reassuring. This new model has also increased job satisfaction among our PATT RNs. Many are now able to work remotely from home on a full time or part time basis. Each team is required to have at least one team member in the hospital to prepare the OR charts. Several of the teams are rotating which team member takes care of this task and which team member works from home, contacting patients. Denise Terantino, a PRN nurse states “I know for me, I feel comfortable asking anyone in the team I am working with for help. I think I have grown as a nurse because I have always felt more comfortable doing everything for my patients by myself, and not delegating anything. Working here has let me see that it’s okay to not do everything and you can trust the next person to pick up where you left off and it truly is okay. THIS IS HUGE for me personally! Just to know someone will get the job done after you and truly follow through!” As Helen Keller once stated, "Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much." With any change, there are bumps in the road, but the staff in PATT has taken it in stride and continue to do their job with great pride. They are a true team, working to increase patient and staff satisfaction and making excellence the goal in all they do. References: (n.d.). Vincelombardi.com. Famous Quotes by Vince Lombardi.
